Community is Currently Down

Post by Mark

I wasn’t planning on posting this since I didn’t think anyone would notice but I’ve been getting emails about it all morning. The Community section of the blog is currently down due to the fact I’m upgrading the software. Earlier this morning I realized I had an old forum software running and Google was giving a “Deceptive site ahead” warning when trying to access the section. So decided I might as well just do a full on upgrade.

issue

Technical Details
The Community runs on Invision Power and I had version 3.8 installed. I’m currently trying to update it to version 4.1 which has new features and an overall fresher look. The upgrade should have taken around 30-60 minutes but turns out my server is running PHP 5.4.45 and I need at least PHP 5.5 for the upgrade. I’m currently waiting for my host to upgrade the PHP version on the server and once that is done I will complete the upgrade process. This should have no effect on the main blog since 248am.com is running on a different server than community.248am.com.

Update: I completed the upgrade but then managed to completely mess things up again. Now have to restore from backup and restart the process. On bright side the google warning should be gone now.

Update2: The upgrade is now complete. There is still lots of work to do like redo the whole Community theme but for now at least it’s back up.

I have to say, since you’ve moved to the new hosting provider, your site has started to feel sluggish.

You should consider https://disqus.com/ for your comments (as you are in the upgrading mood anyway); and while you are at it – replace the community section with https://www.discourse.org/

    Just a thought :)

Sluggish? My blog load speed dropped from 8 seconds to 2 seconds. The speed increase has been incredible and we haven’t even started the optimization process. Every section on the blog now loads basically instantly with no more waiting, the speed difference on the blog is just mind boggling. I can’t believe I didn’t do this move earlier, it’s been an eye opener. So not sure why you’re experiencing “sluggishness” but my guess is it’s related to your connection but even with my slow connection at work my site loads instantly.

Regarding Disqus, it’s a horrible software and there is a lot of science out there showing how its dropped blog participation in huge numbers and many blogs that have tried it abandoned it (including me). I’ve tried it before I hated it, and I hate using it on other websites. It’s sluuggish and all comments belong to disqus so if i ever stop using them they’ll remain on their server and not on my blog.

I noticed it in the morning when trying to access it from work, and thought it was due to their firewall policy. I got the error again just now when I reached home, so I thought I will post a comment on your blog, and then saw that you have already made a post of it.

Well it turns out my server has php 5.6.something but my domain was set to use 5.4. Fixed it. Upgraded. Everything was perfect. Fucked up the upgrade 2 minutes later. Now reuploading everything to start all over again.

huge headache , first time i hear of a domain fixed to a certain php, from which site did you buy ur domain?

        • Mark says:

What does my domain provider have to do with this? I think you misunderstood what I said. My server hosts a bunch of my domains and this specific domain was set to use php 5.4 because I imported it from my previous server which was running php 5.4. So by default the migration software keeps everything the same so not to break anything. I just had to change the setting of the domain to php 5.6
