Green Land Vegetarian Restaurant

Posted by Mark

This is going to be a somewhat strange review since I have no idea what I ate or what ingredients made up my meal. I don’t even like vegetables but when I found out about the place from @basilalsalem’s Instagram, I decided to pass by and try it out.

Green Land is an Indian restaurant located in Souk Al Mubarkia. It looked pretty trendy based on Basil’s picture but my first impression got a bit tarnished since the table cloth on my table had food stains on it. Turns out they don’t change them after each customer but instead just brush off the dirt. That’s just gross.

I ordered a bunch of things for me and my brother, most of which were recommended by Basil and some by the waiter. Here is the whole list:

Masala Dosa KD0.900
This is pictured above, it looks like an oversized crepe but instead of it being filled with Nutella it’s filled with a potato mash of a sort and comes with Marak sauce on the side which is spicy and full of flavor.

Subzi Maharaja KD1.600
I believe this dish is the one pictured at the bottom of this post. No idea what’s exactly inside just that it’s a mixture of vegetables and topped with a bit of cheese. It kicked ass. Definitely worth going back for.

Dal Makhni KD1.250
I also have no idea what this dish was. It’s picture in the photo below (it’s the pot on the right). It was also great, my brother preferred the Subzi Maharaja but for me both are equally as good. If the Subzi Maharaja has one slight advantage it’s that it’s less saucy and so easier to eat with bread.

Poori KD0.300
Easily the best poori I’ve ever had. The order comes 8 in a basket each around the size of a CD. They aren’t very oily and are delicious.

Butter Nan KD0.400
Again the best butter nan I’ve ever had. The order comes 4 in a basket.

Phulkas (Chapathi) KD0.400 (for 2 orders)
Great but waited for the poori and nan to run out before ending with these.

Mango Juice KD1.250
They have a juice stand in the middle of the restaurant that makes fresh juice by order. I went with the Mango juice and it was great since the mangos used were ripe.

Water Melon Juice KD1.250
My brother ordered this and I tried it. Tastes exactly like you’re eating water melon so it’s very refreshing.

Small Water KD0.450 (for 3 orders)

———————

Bill Total: KD7.800

Although we started off on the wrong foot with a dirty table cloth, I have to say the food made up for it. As I said I don’t like vegetables but these dishes were so delicious that I realized I probably don’t like vegetables because I’ve been having them the wrong way. Kinda like how I grew up hating zucchini and then I tried it grilled a few months back and now love it. All the breads we had were great, even the dough of the crepe looking dish was delicious and kinda makes me want to go back with a jar of Nutella and ask them to spread it all over the inside. Price wise they’re on the affordable side with just the juices adding a bulk to our bill. The service was fast and the waiters friendly and helpful. Their menu is huge with no descriptions so you either have to know the dishes or get recommendations like I did. I had a good time and I’m definitely going back to try more stuff.

Green Land is located at the edge of Souk Al Mubarkia in Kuwait City in the block behind Shater Abbas Restaurant. If you ask around for Shater Abbas everyone knows it. They open from 8AM to 4PM and then again from 6PM to 11PM. Their phone number is 22424246 or 22424247

Update: Forgot to add an important point. They don’t accept Knet or credit cards so make sure you bring cash with you.

Dal is lentils and that is what is what your crepe/dosa was made out of and same with the dal makhani. Good source of protein.

I’m surprised that they charge so much for the juices which is really unfair unless the mangoes were fresh. Fresh mangoes from India are very expensive here so maybe, it’s a fair price.

    • Mark says:

Yeah the mangos were fresh, they make all the juices fresh by order using real fruits. I don’t think the juices are expensive but because everything else doesn’t cost much the juices look like they are.

    • Rich says:

Dosa dough is actually made out of a mixture of rice and lentils.
I have been to this restaurant several times and the food is great.
If you want the best Dosa in Kuwait, I would recommend the Udipi restaurant in Kuwait City which is located on Ahmad Al-Jaber street a couple of buildings away from the Oasis Hotel. They close at around 10:30 PM.

I think this is one of the best vegetarian Indian restaurants we have here in Kuwait. These guys dont use baking soda in puri and Phulka like some do. I can go there and eat 12 Phulka’s and still feel light. I have heard other than Green Land there is a restaurant in called Sagar in Salmiya which servers Phulka, haven’t tried it thought.

Zafran is another Indian restaurant which servers best indian food but cost is on the higher side.

Dude that ‘marak’ was probably tomato chutney or coconut chutney.

I’m craving that puri and naan with that Subzi Maharaja right now.

  5. Chris says:

nice.. and true that, I’ve always disliked vegetarian dishes because I have been having the wrong ones.. NOTHING beats India’s veggie dishes, dang they are so good!

  6. Hielda says:

It is SIMPLY THE BEST vegan Indian restaurant!

    • abdou says:

Vegan food does not contain any dairy products, unless I am wrong. This contained some cheese, butter…I’m guessing.

  7. VJ says:

Unfortunately, None of the restaurants in kuwait serve authentic Indian food. if you really care for some, try your hand at Sagar restaurant for dosa, poori etc and copper chimney for a power packed meal. both are in Dubai :-)

ps: your description of dosa is my latest FB update. middleastern definition of dosa

  8. Brandon says:

Masala Dosa is a form of Indian food called ‘Chaat’, which basically means Indian street or fast food.

Its really popular among Indians, every Indian has had Masala Dosa.

Dal Makhni is basically Dried lentils in butter gravy.

Subzi Maharajah literally translates to ‘King of Vegetables’.

Mark if you wanna try real Indian Restaurants you should chill out in the heart of Indian Salmiya, I live in Dubai now so I forgot the name of the area I used to live around but there was this particular store called eedee stores or something.

  9. Budour says:

One of my favorite places to eat in Kuwait!

  10. Lady Gula says:

Hehe, that was pretty brave, trying out the food despite the stained table cloth. You should try Udupi restaurant in Kuwait City. Their thalis are pretty awesome. KWD 1.000 for unlimited puri, rice and sabzis.

  11. Jafar says:

Thanks one of my favorite place !

  12. nYx says:

Sh!t there goes the best kept vegetarian secret of Kuwait! :D

First had food here back in ’06, reminds me of home cooked food, no frills, no fanciness, no over zealous cooks trying to drown the basic vegetable with Masalas (spices)… food which touches your soul. Their menu is totally different from the usual riff raff Indian Restaurants have to offer.

But again, am a bit saddened cause I feel they have been given publicity; word of mouth will spread and they will join the rat race of quantity over quality. I just hope am wrong!

  13. sooli says:

so glad they are opening more and more veggie restaurants here. im a hardcore animal lover and totally against killing them for food. enshallah theyll start a vegan craze too soon.

  14. Nathan says:

Hey, I eat there frequently! Try the Lassi. It’s good.

  15. dougmacho says:

Their masala tea is the absolute best! Served in the cutest of cups!

  16. GG says:

They don’t change the table cloth after every customer because they want to stay true to their name Green. They are infact saving and caring about the environment.
Welcome to the realm of Indian Fiesta! It was long overdue I suppose, considering the huge amount of indian fans you have. Mark here is my suggestion for your next trip. Try Malai Kofta, Paneer masala, Bhel puri, Pani puri and Lassi (I agree with Nathan). Don’t ask me about the description or ingredients, because I am not aware, but I love these dishes.

  17. m7mad says:

    If table cloth isn’t clean.
I wonder how clean their kitchen is ???

  18. Maxson says:

Thanks Mark, I am always on a look-out for good restaurants. I will try this one tonight.

  19. Rehab says:

There is udupi restaurant just ahead of that.
A must try, it’s south Indian veg restaurant. And the Paneer are delicious !
Just don’t order their soup, it’s plain water with little bit of corn flour and cabbage bits !

  20. x says:

not all indian rest change table clothes after each customer…

  21. Muni says:

Mark – You seem to be so ignorant about Indian food and you seem to know only about Burgers. Nutella on Masala Dosa ??? … OMG

BTW Basil AlSalem of Burger Boutique and Sliderstation who creates all those kickass burgers knows much much more about Indian food.

  22. Kulsum says:

One of my favorite places! Attention to detail is one thing Indians in general (I PERSONALLY THINK) lack. And you can see that in many Indian restaurants. Presentation, interiors or in this case table cloth have not been paid much attention too. Thankfully for this place food makes up for it!

  23. Makke di Roti aur Sarson Da Saag says:

Is this a family friendly restaurant, Mark? It vaguely seems like the Kuwaiti chapter of the Govinda chain of restaurants operated globally under the aegis of the ISKCON-Hare Krishna mission.

  24. Security Adviser says:

You are right damnn Indians can spawn out some of the worlds most brilliant minds, come out with the number zero;without which we would not have any computer programmes for that matter matematics or physics, invent hotmail and search engines like google, have a space programme, Have excellent restaurants in Kuwait like Mughal Mahal,Ceasars ,Asha’s ,Soul & Spice, Rangoli etc, Have million dollar buisnesses around the world not to mention 2 out of the top 5 on the world’s richest men’s list but they JUST CANT PAY ANY DAMNN ATTENTION TO DETAILS.. Can you imagine if they could???? them Indian would take over the world.

  25. bashdeer says:

At first it looked creepy but you ended up liking it :)

  26. Brock says:

LOVE this place! The food is served fresh and hot, so filling!
