Kuwait Airways Engine Malfunction

Posted by Mark

Omarker posted a video on his blog that was taken a few days ago onboard a Kuwait Airways flight to Jeddah. The video isn’t so great but you can see that the oxygen masks were released and you could also hear some strange engine sounds. [YouTube]

According to The Buz Fairy, Al-Qabas reported that the minister of transport asked Kuwait Airways to ground three of its ailing Airbus planes due to multiple and repeat maintenance and operational issues.

It’s times like this I wish Wataniya Airways was still around.

@Mark. Keep dreaming, Wataniya Airways will NEVER start up again.
I do have to say I am impressed with Jazeera Airways nowadays..they’ve started selling duty free onboard

    • Sauce says:

      why is that impressive????

      • sandy says:

Exactly, on the last flight that I took with this airline, the stewardess was so overwhelmed with duty free, that they picked up the empty trash from the meals as the plane was landing. Most of the products that Kuwaitis wanted to buy were so sold out. I was just wondering why anyone would want to buy duty free on a one hour flight FROM Dubai?

National embarrassment, i will not dare ask why a rich state would have an airline problem, but i would date say that they have no preemptive or safety imprecation measures, i mean everyone in Kuwait for the past years complain about the problems of Kuwait Airways, and not until an airplane almost killed 200 people until the minister decided to pull in one shot 3 airplanes! so he just figured out the other 3 where dangerous! what flights where they taking before he decided to pull them out of service! such a shame, but also a crime has it caused any deaths.

  3. Kurt says:

I hear them talking about privatization and how that is the key to modernizing fleet, fixing poor revenue and overstaff issues, etc. It’s in the news every other month but no firm dates on when or if it will actually ever happen.

Highly doubt that privatization will seriously happen anytime soon.

    • aaa says:

Would you buy such a problematic airline?

      They can’t find any buyers.

      • TonyKing says:

There are buyers… its just that their demands are outrageous.. They are willing to sell only 35% to the buyer, 40% to locals, 5% to Kuwaiti Employees & remaining 20% buy a local Kuwaiti Investment Firm

  4. Zorbon says:

Privatization only means a company will have the ability to fire/hire/discipline employees…a luxury the government doesn’t have, or atleast, doesn’t wish to exercise.

    • Nathan says:

The bigger reason why no one wants the airline is because of it’s aging fleet. Basically the airline is a sinking ship that cannot be salvaged. And no one wants to buy a ship with holes in it. The only way out is a complete overhaul of the airline. New planes will have to be bought.

  5. TK says:

This is why i will never fly kuwait airways no matter how cheap or even free the ticket is! cuz it aint worth risking my life over

    • TonyKing says:

I agree and I have been following this principle since the last 8 years.. There was a time when Kuwait Airways was one of “The” Best airlines in the gulf, even with their policy of not serving alcohol on board. Their pilots were plain and simple “awesome”. Its a shame what it has become now

  6. Kliffy says:

That’s normal engine failure people getting scared that’s also normal.

    • Matt says:

Engine failure is, by definition, not normal.

      • Aref says:

Actually it a lot more common than you think. I believe Air Canada had one last month on a Boeing 777. Qantas had a highly publicised one recently on a brand new A380! BA had one once 20 minutes out of LAX and continued to LHR( they didn’t quite make it and had to land in Shannon, Ireland)
They happen about once a month in the air transport industry. It’s not a really big deal as long as the failure is contained. The aircraft is designed to fly just fine with one engine. Uncontained failure is the one you have to worry about.
Me and my kids travel on Kuwait Airways all the time. No worries at all!

  7. Ali Sleeq says:

Privatizing means firing redundant employees and that’s something the government doesn’t want their hand’s on.

I heard that Kuwait Airways, as did Middle East Airlines years ago before restructuring, have thousands on payroll who don’t even go to work.

  8. Hielda says:

Hats off to those passengers and how they only kept praying! Too bad KA, this is the incident number 1000!!! When is this gonna be solved? when death finally gets lucky??!!!

  9. Acerboy says:

I can just imagine how ppl must have gone through mental trauma !! God save us all from any such disaster !

  10. Boyousef says:

Weldone to capt f.alsarraf and his crew for piloting this airbus safley to ground

  11. Ahmad says:

Kuwait airways is fine and shouldn’t be losing money, its those big heads that are deliberately ruining it and creating problems by bribing staff so that they can buy it dirt cheap when they privatize it.

  12. Rehab says:

More money is given to the employee rather using them for buying new aircraft, or upgrading the current one !
No matter how much this kind of situation happens, people never bother about, they just want salary increment thats it !
They do not care about service quality, product enrichment or customer feedback !

  13. Teeee says:

The noise you can hear is the hydraulic ‘power transfer unit’ I believe, not the engine. It’s operates when one of the hydraulic systems is at lower than normal operating pressure to bring it back up to a reasonable level. Unfortunately it does make a worrying noise!!

“It’s times like this I wish Wataniya Airways was still around.”

are you kidding me ? the same guy who owned and ditched Wataniya is the same one planning to buy Kuwait airways, when the price become suitable.

if you know what i mean..

  15. Barrak says:

Kuwait Airways had been officially notified by the manufacturer & mother company of Airbus planes by a warning and «Disclaiming» any risks that could arise in the event that Kuwait airways continues operating 5 planes type Airbus 300 due to poor maintenance, and requesting the civil aviation to stop operating & flying the planes and do an immediate Technical Inspection. This was back in 2010 and unsurprisingly Kuwaits government chose to ignore it just like it always does on any matter.

  16. Aziz says:

Result of turning phone on plane. #sarcasm

  17. Anne says:

Unfortunately, these things DO happen every sinle day: http://avherald.com/

Kudos to the crew ! and fast recovery for the passengers from the mental trauma :-/

  18. bob says:

they should sell whatever they can and use the funds to pay off wataniya airways debts and re start it.

  19. Barrak says:

It’s not a random forum. Its actually a fact and Kuwait airways have been fined numerous times and they where also Warned by CDG airport that If they don’t meet the standards of safety they won’t be allowed to land in some airports in the European union. One of Kuwait airways flights had to cancel there flights because it wasn’t allowed to takeoff because of a saftey issue. The incident was bound to happen when your running a 1994 aircraft model. Im not against KA staff and actually mashallah that we have professional pilots. But a country that provides 15 percent of the worlds gas I would expect a old 5 year plane at least, but not an 18 year old plane and keep in mind w only have 17 aircrafts meaning that every aircraft has been used to the limit. In the end of the day it’s shame that KA can’t even compete with other gulf carriers and is actually bankrupt and has been trying to sell 30 percent of its shares for more then a year and still no buyer which makes sense cause whoever wants to purchase it is gonna have to buy a new fleet and find a way to cover the massive operation cost they have on there payroll.

  20. Brandon says:

An engine failure is something a pilot learns about first, and how to tackle that problem. The plane can fly even on one engine and in the unlikely scenario that both engines fail, the pilot releases all fuel and prepares to land by gliding.

Pilots have to go through a lot of simulated problems, sometimes 5 at a time. So I’m pretty sure they can handle an engine failing. That being said, I’m shit scared of flying.
