The hunt for new computer speakers

Posted by Mark

I passed by Bang & Olufsen recently to check out their computer speakers and although I didn’t end up getting anything I always love checking out their stuff.

They had the Beolit 12 (pictured above) which is their Airplay compatible portable music system. Design wise it looks very sharp and if I didn’t already have the BeoPlay A8 I would have considered getting this. Price wise it’s selling for KD250 which is very reasonable for a B&O product.

When it came to computer speakers they had two models available. The first I saw were the BeoLab 4 (pictured above). These speakers look very cool but at KD325 they were a lot more than what I wanted to pay.

They also had the BeoLab 3 on display which looked even cooler than the BeoLab 4 but these also cost nearly four times more coming in at over a thousand Dinars so I didn’t even consider them.

If you’re interested in passing by their store they located in Symphony Mall next to Missoni Hotel in Salmiya. They haven’t launched the new store officially but the shop is open if you want to pass by.

Most Bose are Passive (without Amp bild in) but B&O are ACTIVE LOUD SPEAKERS (Buils in Amp in each spk). NOOO comparison !

B&o sucks. Go with harman kardon.

I found the Bose companion 5 to be the best value for money computer speaker wise.. picked them up a year ago for 120 from the bose shop in Avenues, Very good audio quality for that price. And the virtual 5.1 surround effect they do is quite good, suits my purposes for my gaming desktop nicely.

Lmao, alghanim is selling a whole hometheater samsung brand with 5.1 surround system for 50 kd the other day, what a ripoff this store lol.

Woow that was a good reply Mark !

If you have a home theater setup don’t bother with nice PC speakers, I play everything these days on my TV either through Apple TV Airplay or through a media box that can handle .mkv with a hard drive attached. I play a lot of PC games but I’d prefer a nice pair of headphones for those.

Also you could put 250KD to much better use on improving your screen, graphics card, get an SSD for your OS, etc etc. Speakers are probably the last thing I would spend money on.

Bang & Olufsen is considered to be one of the BEST & Luxuries Brands in the world. It has class, fantastic design, high quality stuffs. Thats what makes them unique and expensive.
Like NO brand gives you colours in their products, No brand gives 4 Amps and central spks build inside of TV. They have the best speakers range with free placement options than any Brand. I dought if any any other brand/company even does that !

    B&O is better than Bose.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not an overhyped, and way overpriced brand. You can do much much better for the same price (or just as good for way cheaper).

The company is pure hype. Similar to Beats, the price is not for the quality (brand name – mediocre quality). The price is mostly for the appearance and marketing.

To their credit their products do look elegant.

I’d recommend checking out http://www.head-fi.org if anyone is looking for any decent set of audio equipment. Maybe find something actually worth the asking price. Simply put you can get a lot more for the money.

I am aware of head-fi, it’s where I research all my headphones. I am also aware of what B&O are and I wouldn’t definitely not call their quality mediocre.

Yes there are better sounding audio equipement but that’s not always the most important thing needed.

I really dislike Bose products and I know what they really are yet I still purchased a set for my main seating room since they’re tiny and looked pretty. for my living room though i got much bulkier definitive technology speakers since looks weren’t as important there.

      • Eliasoz says:

Yeah, they’re lovely decorations if you have the spare money.

However, if your primary concern is sound quality I’d look elsewhere – there’s cheaper and there’s better.

I’m saying mediocre by audiophile standards in a price/quality ratio. I’m sure they get the job done just fine overall.

I’m just letting people in the thread know in case their main goal is sound.

        • Mark says:

If my prime concern was just sound I wouldn’t be looking at B&O obviously

          • Eliasoz says:

            Good to know, Mark.

Not everyone here knows that, though. I feel bad when someone overpays for Beats or a Bose set of headphones and think they got a great deal. So more people should know about head-fi.org so they could do some research.

Just spend it on a Beyerdynamic Tesla headphone and use whatever is left to upgrade your computer.

    • Mark says:

Just sold my BeyerDynamic headphones and headphone amp a few days ago. Not interested in headphones and already have the iMac connected to my sound system using AirPlay. Also not interested in upgrading my Mac. I want computer speakers it’s not that complicated.

    Logitech Z623 THX 2.1 speakers – assuming you don’t mind a sub!
I have the 5.1 version for my Main Pc setup.
And I have to say that -for music- I’m not missing much if compared to my Lexus GS350 Mark Levinson system
cost is around 60 KD which is a lot of Value

I am really not looking for recommendations, not sure why everyone is suddenly so helpful lol
