Runaway
I never thought I would see this happening but our maid back in Lebanon ran away 2 days ago!!! I just found out about it today. This seriously came to me as a shock, our maid is this lovely really nice tiny Sri Lankan person. She likes me alot, used to always tell me she wants to come and work in my house in Kuwait. My parents have never mistreated her. My mum used to occasionally get a bit pissed at her for doing something the wrong way but it was never a big deal. Our maids’ husband in Sri Lanka is a drunk , he spends all the money she sends him on alcohol instead of spending it on his 3 children. He started causing us problems from the first month she came and started working in our house. He use to call up the Sri Lankan embassy in Lebanon to tell them we are not paying his wife and that we are mistreating her which was totally bullshit of course. My mum had to go to the embassy with financial records of money transfer to prove to them that none of the claims were true.
Now back to my main issue, I have no clue why our maid would run away, she had been with us for almost 2 years. Not only that but she also stole 100$ from my mums’ desk and 2 golden rings before fleeing the house. Today the embassy called my mum to tell her that our maid is now within the embassy’s premises and that they wanted us to send them a plane ticket to Sri Lanka and the rest of the money we owed the maid. My mum basically told them to kiss her ass, she had just paid 700$ to renew the maid’s papers in Lebanon and she was not willing to be made a fool of. My dad also fired a complain to the generale security about the maid stealing personal belongings and now they are waiting to see what happens. I really feel sorry for my maid, I dont know what pushed her buttons, whether it was her husband or her kids, but whatever her reasons are she didnt have the right to flee the house just like that, that was totally ungratefull after all the good things we had done for her.
This is a very common problem in Lebanon, alot of Sri Lankan workers flee the homes of their employers: some just do it because they want to live on their own and freelance, others do it because they find the waiting period (commonly 2-3 years) too long to handle before they can go back to Sri Lanka and be with their families. That makes me a bit sad though, I used to like our maid, from all the maid’s we’ve had before she was my favourite. I’m very disappointed, just waiting to see what will happen next.

There are great housekeepers (I find the term maids degenerating) that are in bad houses/families. And vice-versa ..
The way I see it, someone probably convinced her that it was the smart thing to do. Many housekeepers run away in London, they are convinced that they can find better work elsewhere. While some do actually go on to do bigger and better things; the majority assimilate into the homeless/jobless population. Either that or become the masses that make up the sweat shops.
i totally sympathise with ure situation, its not easy having someone new every few months, they get into your house, your life, you space, they know the ins and outs and then they go, with out an evident reason!
Here in london, lots of those house keepers run away the minute they land, they have already made their calculations. if a house keeper gets paid 45-50 kd a month. In London, She earns not less than £8 pounds AN HOUR,that is the lowest payable rate allowed by the gov, she works felexible hours and in multiple house holds in addition to claiming benefits and disability allowances from the government, who also provides them with a place to stay and free medical support!! that adds up to not less than £500-900 a month, an average of 300KD.
Wow Shrink thats alot of money. It’s much less costly to get a housekeeper in Lebanon. If I was paying my housekeeper 500 kd a month I would put chaines on my door to make sure she doesn’t go anywhere while I’m out :)
i think simple reson why maids run away from employers????when ur treating humenbing like animal..what u expect from them?Any law protecting the house workers esp,in arab countries…NO???????
wow..im so late in commenting on this blog, well im doin a survay, like a college project, n i have chosen the problems faced by housemaids in kuwait, you guys wont believe the things i have found about the way these maids are treated in their employers homes, its soo freaking heart breaking, i found this maid who was asked to sleep with the dog outside the house, another one was beaten up so badly only cuz she ate from the food that was cooked for the members of the house, she was asked to eat the left overs, another one was raped continuesly for 10 days n wen the wife of that employer found out she started hitting the maid cuz she thinks that the maid seduced her husband, their are some more horrible cases in Kuwait that are found but the govt does not do anything about it. Gosh i wish i could send this to ppl who are human enough to understand the pain of these maids. Their are some asholes who recruit maids that are very youngm 13, 14 year old children and really the govt dosent care, n these maids dont get to go home for soo many year. :(
@asma: you sound like a maid :P HAHA
