Octopus City Blues, a locally developed video game

[YouTube]

Firas Assaad is an expat born and living Kuwait and works as a software developer in a small company in the city. Firas had always wanted to make games and so for the past 2 years he’s worked on a side project called Octopus City Blues.

I found out about Octopus City Blues last night when I got an email from a reader telling me about a Kickstarter project based from Kuwait. Firas went on Kickstarter to secure funding to help pay the other team members for their time and was hoping to get just $7,000 but with 6 days left he’s already gotten pledges of nearly $17,000. The game looks super cool and trippy plus it’s 2D which I love. You can watch the trailer on top to see the style of the game and below are some links with more information on Firas and the project:

I wonder how he managed to get funding on Kickstarter. AFAIK, they only support US, UK and Canada. There was some news recently that they plan to start in NZ.

Thanks for posting it. 🙂

You need an American team member to help you. In our case, we have an American producer and copy editor and we used his bank account to sign up for Kickstarter. You can find plenty of international projects from Japan, Turkey, Germany, etc. on Kickstarter.

Wow…16 bit pixel heaven. Hopefully we will see it on the PS3 or PS4 soon. so much retro gaming love put into the game, the graphic details are crazy.

Look for Kuwait Towers on the stages map? at 1:21

Haha I admit it, that’s the water storage tower and it’s definitely inspired by Kuwait Towers.

We’d love to port the game to consoles eventually, but PC and mobile devices are the priority.

The game looks really good, the graphics are crisp and have a nice old-school feel and the whole look, tone and feel looks like something David Lynch and Tim Burton would’ve come up with.
