Original Chamber of Commerce and Industry building getting demolished

Back in 2011 I posted the picture above of the original Chamber of Commerce and Industry building. I loved the old architecture in the building and I wrote about how I hope it was not going to get demolished. Sadly last night they started demolishing the building.

The building is an important emblem of Kuwait’s modern heritage and the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters was even trying to list it along with some of the surrounding buildings onto UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

This is why there will be a protest against this destruction this afternoon at 4:30PM beside the building. If it’s something you care about then pass by and show your support. Here is the location on [Google Maps]

Below is a shot of the building taken in the early 70s.

It’s sad that they are demolishing it…a little facelift is all it needs. What will they be building in its place? One of those anorexic-looking towers?

The precast cladding panels, actually the precast everything has a level of quality that you just don’t get today.

The decisions they’re making today to demolish these invaluable structures will inevitably lead to young Kuwaitis 50 years from now feeling alienated from their culture, region and country. They are the same mistakes that were made 50 years ago when they demolished all what our country was built on and alienated the current generation.

This is our HERITAGE.

Everything in Sharq was demolished, how could they do this

Sharq had many historic buildings, Jebla had many historic buildings, even Mirqab had old buildings. ALL GONE NOW.

They are trying to erase our identity

Bummer. Such a shame. As you say, such buildings are important markers in the history of the country. To get wiped off the map is like erasing a chapter from that history. On the one hand it’s 3adat and takaleed, on the other it’s callous disregard for anything of cultural value. Yalla sheel!

They are trying to erase everything from the past not realizing their heritage is being erased as well. I go out all of the time looking for old buildings and taking pictures of them as one day they might ‘accidently’ get demolished like many other historical buildings. They want to be so modern and act like a Western country, even Western countries preserve historical buildings for future generations.

BRING BACK SHARQ

BRING BACK JEBLA

SHARQ AND JEBLA ARE OUR HERITAGE

EVERY BUILDING FROM THE PRE-OIL ERA IS GONE

THEY WANT US TO FORGET THE PRE-OIL ERA

EVEN DUBAI HAS MORE PRE-OIL BUILDINGS THAN KUWAIT.

They might just destroy it and build something similar to it’s design.

It’s old and taking up unnecessary space in a prime area. Nothing wrong in destroying it.
