Kuwait is expecting unwelcomed guests next week – swarms of desert locusts are set to arrive to the country due to climate change and increased temperature, a veteran meteorologist said. The swarms are expected to be considerably large compared to recent years, according to forecasts by “some environmental and agricultural groups”, said Dr Saleh Al-Ojairi in a statement Monday. Horrible 🙂
When they are swarming, your not supposed to eat them:
“Locusts are edible insects and are considered a delicacy in some countries. There have been references to their consumption as food throughout history.[3] On swarming they are known to produce a toxin that renders them inedible and causes a skin reaction in sunlight.”

Kuwaitis been eating it forever during swarming. In fact, swarming was the only way for it to come to Kuwait.
U sure? 🙂
I am readying my net!… yeah crispy fried would do!
My cats are preparing for it. If any invade my private domicile, my cats will have free food ;P
Lol.. I have a cat too. That furry little monster will enjoy hunting them for sure!
Well, I guess it’s time to emigrate.
As I understand it, the Saudis put extensive pesticides to try to deter the locusts, which is not a practice permitted in some countries which have plague locusts, because the pesticides are strong and affect the agricultural products which are consumed later or enter the food chain through animals who eat the heavily treated grasses. (Also, it doesn’t seem that affective….they use some kind of biological pesticide in the US but the Saudi eradication program is with chemical pesticides). However, the locusts still manage to consume a lot of the pesticide treated grains, and the surviving locusts have concentrated pesticides in them…I have eaten them a couple of time over the years I have lived here, but I was warned that they are no longer healthy to eat…I cannot attest to the truth of this, but was just told by people that the locusts have high levels of pesticides contaminants….I guess the locusts eat the pesticides but do not die?
Eww…no thanks!
who knows where i can get some that are already cooked?
They were supposed to come but never did. Until now. They’re all over our area in Salmiya, and my husband has seen them in Hawalli as well. Yet, no mention when I do a google search for current news of their swarming or travels.
