Anti-Smoking Flashmob?

Speaking of a smoking ban…

A group of young students surprised shoppers at one of Kuwait’s most frequented malls by shouting anti-smoking slogans and carrying posters asking smokers to stub out their cigarettes.

The stunt, unprecedented in Kuwait where smoking is a major issue, was meant to embarrass those who flouted the law that bans smoking in malls and other closed places, Shuaa Al Qadhi, the head of public relations, said.

Several of the shoppers and people at the mall felt uneasy when they saw the young girls and boys urging them to put out their cigarettes and they complied, she said, local daily Al Qabas reported on Tuesday.

Smoking has been banned in closed areas in Kuwait since 1994, but the rule is often broken.

A field study has found that a cigarette is lit every 58 seconds at Kuwait International Airport and that 20 per cent of grown ups and 11 per cent of teenagers regularly smoke in Kuwait, the daily said. [Source]

Did anyone take pictures or shoot any video of this?

I salute them for doing that, I’m just back from Marina Mall with my family, and my son is feeling sick because of the amount of cigarette smoke there! I couldn’t find a single spot where no one is smoking, it’s gross and it has to STOP!!

i think the teenagers percentage might be even more accurate than the adults’ percentage. are you aware that some kids start smoking when they are only 13 years old?! i know that for a fact. you’ll find that almost half of the boys at the average high school smoke. i truly feel sorry for those guys.

the FIRST worthy movement in Kuwait. When it comes to actual human welfare I mean. We need more of these for the social ills in Kuwait.

My full support and admiration to these guys.

a victim ? who cares what the they do or say just walk up to them and just ask whats this all about while blowing smoke in their face.

You think it smells disgusting … I like it 🙂

… Leads to cancer .. mmm not really 🙂 it is a contributing element not the sole reason.

That is the worst reasoning I ever heard

Hey man shoot yourself in the head. It doesn’t kill you the blood loss does it’s just a contributing element

you are in serious denial. please reevaluate your priorities. is smoking more important than preserving your health and well-being?!

urghhh … 🙂
Smoking is a personal choice, if there are rules we as smokers should abide by them, but when you ban smoking all over we are bound to break rules here and there … in the end you are violating our freedom of choice as well.

Don’t cram smokers in the traps (1×1 smoking rooms at airports) setup 1 or 2 coffee shops equipped to handle smoking (Check out Bahrain Airport & Beirut Airport) and voila problem solved 🙂

I doubt it. I know some considerate smokers, but don’t kid yourself that the ones who break the rules are only doing it because they find the rules too restrictive. They do it because they’re inconsiderate, entitled brats. Yes, it’s an addiction, but it doesn’t render you unable to respect others.

wow! i was there when that happened! i felt so proud of those kids! i just hope that they’ll stay away from smoking when they’re older too. 🙂 great idea
