Lawyers in Kuwait have issued a legal challenge to the only law in the world forcing citizens and visitors to give samples of their DNA to the government. [Source]
Thank god, I was starting to worry that everyone was OK with this.

i can’t understand why so many people are mad about this law.
Because you are not free, and will never understand freedom.
Because it’s a complete waste of money and energy, the whole idea of a DNA data base is to identify a person or the remaining of that person after an attack. It does not prevent it, So rather than spending that money and effort to increase security they are welling to waste it on something with a very limited use. Then there’s a question of how will they handle the data? Idk about you but I wouldn’t trust anyone with my information yet alone my genetic structure, you would think oh I’m being paranoid or something but in reality no, even the DNA evidence in the hands of the FBI were miss used or gave false readings in some cases do you honestly think that they can do better job than the FBI ?
I say fuck this nonsense, I would rather take that money and buy a super computer to analyze the genetic properties of a cancer cell who knows we might be better off pursuing curing cancer for a change.
A case to repeal this law was launched with the Constitutional Court, the same day it was announced in the official gazette.
Personally don’t mind this law don’t see it as anything big it’s a mere dna test and if it helps make the streets safer then why not
How does it help make the streets safer?
Not sure exactly but guess would help track down people who commit crimes right and in return it gives the impression that people won’t get away with crime so they wouldn’t commit it. Is kinda how I see it
#IDIOT
Its called a personal opinion mr big shot professor, if you get offended by my opinion then your contradicting your own tag on me. Of course my opinion is not meant to offend anyone.
The problem is that the people making up such draconian laws understand as little about human rights, security, and privacy as you do.
the mere idea that you called someone an idiot because of his/her opinion is a clear proof who is the idiot!!
Wow the stupid folk are crawling out of the woodwork.
hi guys
the thing thats buging me is how is this diffrent from finger prints. i mean not the technology of it. please shine some light on the topic.
again i m not againt or with any of them
just genuinely like to see some opinons & point of views
It can and will be misused on matters of paternity, nationality, health & life insurance. Do you really trust the government to protect this information? Go to any ministry and you will see cleaning boys used as file couriers in addition to login passwords written on post-it notes stuck to the monitors.
Good to know I’m not the only one that has my work computer password on a post-it note stuck to my screen
As silly as this law is, my question is where on earth are the staff going to come from??? Who’s a genetic doctor or scientist in Kuwait i don’t know any ??? maybe they will recruit some geniuses from our highly efficient ministries to work in the lab
We have DNA testing in kuwait in Alsabah Hospital and there are private clinics
to. They do DNA testing to check any mutation gene for famalies who have genetic disorders
Good think you do not have a million people’s DNA profile. 🙂
DNA database is the governments answer to a problem they have themselves started in the late 60’s and 70’s. This is not about having better “security” as stated in the posts above me. It will not stop any attacks but will make it easy as fuck to identify the culprit and therefore identify the mastermind behind a terrorist act or any other criminal act.
If you have followed the news regarding the DNA database in the local news you will notice that almost all government responses and statements are conducted by Sheikh Mazin Aljarah. Right now his sole job it seems is to root out anyone that has acquired the Kuwaiti nationality illegally. The problem as stated in the first sentence is that the govt. itself populated Kuwait with people who were not actually Kuwaiti. (I’m not talking about bedouins that have been part of our history and heritage since this land existed)
Lol everyone has an idea of what “actually Kuwaiti” is and nobody agrees
If someone is Kuwaiti today they are Kuwaiti full stop and there is nothing you can or should do to change this
The government had this plan long ago. It was floated in the late ’90s early ‘2000s but met strong resistance. They were waiting for a new opportunity to implement it. The mosque bombing last year was the green light and the law was passed within five days of the bombing. Just another example of the noticeable erosion of freedoms & democracy in Kuwait since 1990.
I can see why the DNA thing is not popular I do not want it to take place because of privacy.
Imagine A dead Pregnant maid is found now they can find out who the father was.
or a maid gives birth now she can prove who the father is.
Think about it….
You can do that without testing and keeping DNA records of the entire population of a country.
Like in other countries.
But isn’t that helpful so that they could then apprehend the father…
I know it’s a tough question regarding privacy… It will really get to those type of people you mentioned. But what about the rest of the population?
I think what Omar mentioned is right. Just do what other countries are doing.
Like Ismail said, I don’t think this is a matter of crime prevention and evidence gathering. I think it’s about using DNA to identify who is Kuwaiti by blood and who is not, which I personally think is a great initiative. It’ll solve the bedoon problem.
Can someone please explain to me what Kuwaiti by blood actually means? Do any of you know how genetics work? And that many of us are mixed? Nobody is purely ANYTHING anymore?
Or do you mean people who obtained nationality through falsifying birth records? Because if that’s the case I’m sure theres a much cheaper way to double check those records without forcing all of us (and every foreigner travelling here) to give up their DNA.
This is going to be a huge hit to our thriving tourism *joking*
Their country, their laws.. If you are not a citizen, you could choose to pack up and leave or dance to the tune.
That said; considering the pouring international attention on this case, one can hope law might be amended to exclude foreign residents and visitors(or at least visitors) once they get hold of the data they actually need !
Anyways, good luck y’all
I’m a citizen and totally against this law
It’s like people who are ok with the government collecting all SMS, emails and pictures that people send because “I’m not doing anything wrong”. It’s like suddenly privacy is not a concern… do you leave the door open when you go to the bathroom? After all it’s not like you have anything to hide so you might as well leave it open. Hell let’s just make bathrooms in the middle of the street we all have nothing to hide
LOL +99
i dont know nor care it will be good or bad but one thing is for sure it will track who abandon the new born baby in garbage !!
So what are the advantages??
I’m gonna quote the late Kurt Cobain on this: “Oh well, whatever, never mind”. (:
I hope they make a clone of me.
good news
