Insecam.com recently made the news as a website that displays footage from thousands of unsecured webcams from around the world. According to the website there are 112 unsecured webcams in Kuwait some of which are located inside peoples homes. Right now I’m watching a couple sleeping in bed. Creepy. [Link]
If you have a webcam at home make sure you change the password since all the webcams listed on insecam are there because the owners kept the default password.

Having a security camera inside a bedroom is stupid thing to do.
How else would I make sure my wife is not cheating.
hehe you have to keep an eye on women at all times, they are very prone to sleeping with other men.
Those bedroom cams are creepy. I doubt the occupants installed them or even know that they exist!
This.
Actually I think it should have been These.
“This” refers to your statement, and not to the occupants or the cameras.
I gotta stop doing naughty stuff in front of the web camera then.
Does people still trust having anything connected to the Internet as safe?
Everything is hackable and I mean everything. beware everyone and don’t trust the 3rd party just because they are good developers or even trusted websites.
Same goes for applications on stores, people accept anything from developers even though sometimes the intended APP is not necessarily in need of accessing the photos as in example. same goes with contacts, people who used VOIP apps that are free keeps telling me how they make money?
rarely ads, but mostly from you.
Probably contacts, or how you are connected to them, beware and be safe
They’re hackable, true.
But there’s a difference between setting up a camera, and setting up a camera AND CHANGING THE DAMN DEFAULT USERNAME\PASSWORD.
Human stupidity; there’s no patch for that…
Everything is hackable.
your old nokia phone is hackable, your ” smart ” refrigerator is hackable.
But as Q8Geek stated don’t be stupid with technology.
Also don’t stand out. people who are on instagram/facebook/twitter tend to stand out over the balance of attraction that can attract hackers who want money or for just not liking you. you should read the hack stories out on the internet you will be surprised.
I myself leave everything connected to the internet, I have no information that I need to keep hidden.
As for APPS that needs to access your photo let them access it just don’t put nude selfies on your phone and your safe, what other information are people afraid of leaking ?
People who have sensitive information or even pictures or videos should how to transfer or use the data wither its online or offline.
I am not a hacker nor am i a person that knows how to keep my data completely safe, but I have no sensitive data that will effect me if ever , well maybe the information of my server and host ?:P
hackers who are reading, please do not hack me x.x
You might not have pictures and stuff, but you probably have a banking app or use your phone’s browser to check your account details, investment portfolios etc. All gold for someone with ulterior motives.
They could have made it so that the camera wouldn’t start streaming until you had visited it’s admin panel and set a password. Simple workaround to human ignorance/naivety.
wouldn’t be the friendliest UX, but would make the existence something like insecam impossible.
Leave it to me to find this, my son was telling me to stop being a pervert but I label it curiosity.
No, you’re a pervert.
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
@Mark, can’t believe you’re calling this “creepy” like you’re not making the choice to watch and are therefore also a creep. Get some self-control, people – just because other people were careless and “stupid” according to you, doesn’t mean you get a free pass on exploiting that. You’re still responsible for your own actions.
This has nothing to do with self control. I had to flip through the different cameras and see exactly whats on there so I could write about it. It’s about privacy and the fact that total strangers can watch a random couple sleep in bed is creepy.
and then tell people about it so that they too can do it. ok
thats how news works… you’re supposed to tell people about it.
Actually, you don’t. You don’t “have” to. You could have written about anything else. You could have declined to watch people going about their private lives and just said such a website existed and reminded people to change their passwords so they don’t end up on one. You could have made the choice to not be a creep and not to enable other creeps, but instead you chose to act like you have some sort of duty to spy on people for the sake of a blog post and that it’s somehow different when you do it.
@crazyinkuwait, I understand you’re lashing out because the truth hurts, but instead of being a defensive creep, perhaps you should just stop creeping. A simple solution for the person who is averse to accepting responsibility: just don’t do whatever it is, and then you won’t have to get upset when people tell you what you are.
You seem to have a different view on how the news is supposed to work. Personally I choose to report the news and let people decide what they want to do with that piece of information. I consider my readers well educated, sophisticated and smart enough to make their own decisions. They don’t need me to water down the news for them or make them believe the world is a pretty place.
If well established news websites like cnn and bbc can report on this then so can I.
D- stands for Debbie Downer, I watched some parked cars not naked people getting it on, I bet you checked it out as well so you are probably a closet perv as well. SMH

Nice
Well, that’s an old trick that I’ve used to play with for a long time.
you can Google search ‘inurl:/view.shtml’ and it will turn out with lots of results to free to air CCTV cameras that you can control most of the time, most of them are office, campus or weather cameras though but its nice for anyone who want to experiment with it without really breaching anyone’s privacy.
This is scary creepy! I always hated web and IP cams and their complicated router settings…..port forward, DMZ, blah blah! and I’m probably vulnerable to even the least experienced hacker.
Thanks for highlighting this Mark, will have to change my password.
FYI, i’ve perused the link and – goddamn it – safari isn’t giving me much to perve about!!
