What happens when you flush a toilet in the world’s tallest building

Looks like we’ve got an advantage over Dubai when it comes to our sewage structure? According to an article on BoingBoing, most of the skyscrapers in Dubai aren’t connected to the sewage network and trucks actually need to come and empty the sewage from the buildings manually. [Link]

Score
Kuwait 3* – Dubai 3,204

*We got the first point when Dubai blocked flickr and the second point when malls in Dubai started telling people what to wear

I grew up (for a few years) in a 200 year old farm house in rural New England. Our house wasn’t connected to a main line. It had a septic tank – and when the tank was full- that was it. Full. Our motto was, “Don’t flush for everything…” Perhaps the residents of Dubai should adopt a similar approach (giggles).

Sounds like you had a rough childhood. My condolences. So basically you had to drop deuces and keep compounding them to save space. That really is a terrible predicament. Personally I’d just go in the wilderness if I were in that situation.

I don’t believe this report, so I will go to the Burj and I will confirm this report. At least Dubai doesn’t smell like sewage like Kuwait, ever been to Salmiya? Don’t stand up too straight, Kuwait looks like an ill-managed garbage dump and has a long way to go to catching up with Dubai.

You know me too well! Just got it from rihab today. Went there as soon as that guy from the forum said it dropped. I really am playing it and so should you. Right now im trolling from a mobile device that I carry with me for emergency trolling.

Kuwait is having the best sewage system in the gulf region and one of the best.. but still they need to recycle the waste in a good way instead of throwing some of it into the sea.

I was playing it all night, was trying to find out where the Dark Brotherhood is, think I found out, doing a quest to “initiate” it (I think).

But I’m at work now and I’ll have to wait until I get back home to finish that quest 🙁

You can see the trucks, it’s been like this for years. They expanded faster than the infrastructure can keep up, it’s also part of why they have bad traffic problems.

I am sure this report is false, a building of that size would result in a lot of sewage trucks pretty often. plus you almost never see trucks in the old town area around the burj

What’s your point? Making up this slanderous report on Dubai. Jealous? The Kuwait government could never build such a building in Kuwait and if they did attempt it, it wouldn’t be built till 2030. Isn’t that suppose to be Kuwait’s golden year when they purportedly to become the business hub of the region. Right>$#$

why would kuwait even need the tallest tower in the world? Kuwait’s aims aren’t just to build the biggest and tallest, thats not what progress is.

Yeah you know why? Because in the Kuwaiti government we don’t have someone who wakes up one day and feels like building the world’s tallest tower or some plant shaped island at their whim as if they were playing SimCity with infinite funds. We actually have a representative assembly that foresees things and these projects usually have to serve some sort of purpose. Granted it’s a flawed system but at least citizens have a say in managing their country’s affairs.

You can look at it the other way as well –

Because of the large governmental bureaucracy, progress is hindered.

The government of Dubai also has a structure – it is not a bunch of hooligans that are building things left and right – and in my opinion they do a lot better job of dealing with the immediate needs of their citizens (and residents); including providing for their welfare and directly contributing towards their quality of life.

Most (if not all) government services in Dubai are electronic and digitized – which allows the government to better (and quickly) serve their people.

Take any public service in Dubai and compare it to Kuwait and you’ll see a great contrast in how things should be done, vs. how things are actually being done here.

A lot of projects that “serve purpose” have been delayed because of government and ministerial bickering and “grilling” of ministers.

The new University campus
The badly needed upgrade of the airport
The desperately needed LRT/public transit system
Speaking of sewage, the upgrade to the sewage treatment plants.
Power infrastructure upgrades.

Representative government is great – if it actually can push through projects and legislation that directly benefit the public it is meant to serve (here I’m not even talking about the expats – but Kuwaitis).

While what you’ve said is true, I still think that having some sort of representative government is far more valuable than anything you’ve mentioned. Sure we have problems in Kuwait, but these are the pangs of birth that we have to go through as a developing country. Everything you said about Dubai is true and it’s really nice, but how can the average citizen take pride in any of that when they’ve contributed nothing to it? Basically it’s the product of foreign investment and one guy calling all the shots. That’s not true development, it’s riding a bike with the training wheels on. But at some point the training wheels have to come off. You have to fall and you have to learn from your mistakes as you go along. I think it’s more meaningful to have your ups and downs as a country in which you have a representative government than to be handed down an artificial list of accomplishments from a central authority.

Besides, if I may direct your attention away from the superficial glamour of skyscrapers and pretty urban landscapes, I’d like you to consider the human factor. Things like elections, freedom of press, diverse political schools of thought, etc. Intangible yet incredibly powerful things that contribute to the true empowerment of a population and stimulate its intellectual growth. That’s far more meaningful than having the world’s tallest tower if you really think about it.

Are you saying citizens are not proud of Dubai? All of Dubai’s public services and most of their public departments are manned by UAE citizens; and here’s something else for you – they don’t treat foreigners like 2nd class citizens unlike here.

All of Kuwait’s infrastructure (yes, all of it), is made possible by foreign investment. It was foreign investment (and still is) that enabled the oil industry to boom in Kuwait and the rest of the Middle East.

What do you define as “true development” and where do you see that in Kuwait? I sure don’t. All of the landmark projects in Kuwait are designed and developed and built by foreigners; not a single landmark building in Kuwait has been designed by a citizen, let alone an Arab.

Even if everything I said is wrong and there is true regional development – why do you think Kuwait is busy trying to attract foreign investment by creating “free” zones (like the badly managed Free Trade Zone)? Why do you think companies scramble to hire technical people from outside Kuwait?

Kuwait’s rulers know what everyone else does – Kuwait needs foreign help to develop – because Kuwait itself doesn’t produce a highly educated technical workforce; it is really that simple.

Qatar is working on a knowledge economy (very bold move). Dubai is working on a financial services based economy.

Kuwait is still stuck in the oil economy.

Speaking of the human factor (elections, freedom of press, diverse political school of thought)

Freedom of Press – Kuwait and UAE have the exact same ranking in the Press Freedom Index (as of
2010)

However, on a more practical note – I have yet to see Dubai put any blogger/tweeter in jail; but in Kuwait this is a commonplace; and bloggers can be sued for a bad review (ahem, Mark).

I am sure stimulating intellectual growth is what the mps that have been elected to represent the citizens are doing when they have motions to ban the color red and roses during valentines. Any cultural or art shows in Kuwait that are held by the government? Nope. Even the book fair is censored.

Compare that with the UAE that has plans for a Guggenheim museum.

I can say with absolute conviction that freedom of thought, religion and press is more prevalent in Dubai that there is in Kuwait.

You are right – there are lot more things important than having the world’s tallest tower (or the world’s tallest twisted wall building – which the Hamra is); I just wish Kuwait would actually work towards those instead of pointing at its neighbors 🙂

This stuff has been known since like, 2004. It’s not slanderous, Dubai does a really good job of maintaining their image.

We got brothels in Kuwait, that’s another point? What about not having the government being controlled by the Russian mafia? That’s another?

no, that would set kuwait back to zero. bro.

> What about not having the government being controlled by the Russian mafia.

well, at least they have a government.

Kuwait has brothels. Prostitution in the Middle East is generally slavery though, they’re kidnapped and forced into it both here and in Dubai.

Then i guess this is not the right country for why don`t go live in Thailand you could have all the hookers you want.

actually, I think this is a better idea. To carry the sewage manually and to treat it rather than just dump it in the sea. Plus, having a sewage system will make certain places of the town smell like rotten eggs.

If you want another story, you should see how much they are charging for cool air. That is right….cool air!

Guess what

It’s not a better idea. Instead of carrying it by truck to treat it there are these things called pipes, they were invented a while ago

Guess what else?

i clearly said “sewage system” so that includes the pipes as well. I mean, you can’t have a “system” without insuring the proper flow of things.

Is that clear enough master Splinter?

What happens when you flush a toilet in Jleeb Al Shuyoukh or Salmiya?? It ends up on the streets – thanks to the overflowing sewage system.

Its not bcoz of 10 families in one flat… but bcoz of buildings which had 10 flats earlier is been demolished and new one’s constructed which has around 60-80 flats…

but the drainage system is same which was for the buildings with 10 flats…

.

try to live and work in dubai or any other UAE emarate .. ( not a holiday for 3 or 7 days )

i think you will find 10000+ advantages for kuwait over dubai 😉

living here for the past 2 years for study 😉

Is it me or can anyone imagine the speed at which the crap would fall if someone dumped from the top floor of the Burj…Spllaaaaaaattt

It would fall at the same speed as if you dropped a ball from the edge of your table – 9.8/meters per second squared – at the rate of gravity.

Yes, feeling geekish 🙂

Hmmm buddy I guess its more like 9.8 m/s square and thats the acceleration due to gravity not the speed.. I guess the speed of a free falling body depends on the mass of the body..or else paper and crap would fall at the same speed…I guess though I may be wrong..

Guys, go back to school.
Speed of the falling object doesn’t depend on its mass ( generally – we are not talking about drag force – that is why paper sheet falling slower than metal ball ).
v =square root(2gh)
where g is gravity 9.8 m/s square
h is height

127 ms^-1 or 458 kms^-1 not accounting for air resistance. Since the value of air resistance depends on many factors, include shape, surface area, temperature, air density and so on, I doubt you would find a correct answer.

I honestly think all you guys that critise Dubai are in fact ‘stinking’ jealous of what Dubai has accomplIshed in a few decades while Kuwait in that same time more or less stood still. It is much easier for people to critizise then compliment. And talk about sewage….??? Hahahaha dont start me on Kuwait on that.
I think Dubai is amasing, lived there for many years, sewage ‘shit’ or not.

The blog owner is Lebanese so why would he be jealous and he is not saying Kuwait is better than Dubai actually he didn`t write one bad word about Dubai your the one talking shit about my country but hey why don`t you instead go see a doctor for your brain constipation

I love how this has become a “patriotic” debate over which country is better.

However those that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

Kuwait has a long list of challenges that need to be taken care of:
– General corruption and nepotism in the public sector.
– A parliament that is actually hindering the progress of the country.
– Poor public educational system (not in all subjects but its not the best that it could be).
– Poor planning regarding infrastructure
– Human Rights issues
– The feeling of entitlement that many Kuwaities have.
– And More!

Do these factors make Kuwait a terrible country? No not at all, but its something that needs to be addressed by everyone, citizen or expat so that they can be improved.

The sad thing is that many of these discussions end up becoming arguments where everyone is pointing the finger at someone else and nothing gets done.

To be fair, much of Kuwaits development was stalled due to the society’s fear of Saddam Hussein ever attacking in the future but as soon as he was gone, development increased. However that does not excuse a great deal of other factors.

Dubai had a man with a vision for the future and he made sure that it went forward. Kuwait had a man like that with the late Abdullah Al-Salim, where he had a clearer idea of what he wanted Kuwait to be, that’s not to say that the rulers that came after him didn’t have a vision, they just agreed with his because it was a good one and Kept it going.

Dubai learned a lot from Kuwait in its prime, Kuwait can learn a lot from Dubai now.

Yes yes, I know “If you don’t like Kuwait, you can always leave.” I hate that argument because its like saying if your home’s septic tank exploded slowly filling your house with shit, your only option is to wallow in that filth or leave the house. Kuwait is my home and I would much rather fix the problems than just go to another country.

Kuwaitis are pretty open about those being problems though. There are a lot of people who speak out against it, as well as social media etc. Diwaniyas are also full of people complaining about such issues. Usually the complaints are in Arabic but trust me they are there.

Unfortunately (and I say this as a Kuwaiti) even if we had a better education system a large portion of Kuwaitis just don’t want to learn and will go out of their way to cheat instead of study.

“To be fair, much of Kuwaits development was stalled due to the society’s fear of Saddam Hussein ever attacking in the future”

what lol ? did countries been attacked in WWI stopped developing because of the fear of another war (WWII) ?

speaking about enough said, Japan and Germany were brought to their knees in WWII, now they give loans to other countries..

and we keep moaning about a war that lasted about 6 months 26 days lol

i wonder how Germany and Japan would be if they had like gulf’s resources..

wake up dudez, war bells is ringing, WWIII is about to begin 🙂

and when the US gets attacked, the last thing they will think about is protecting gulf

there will be no WWIII. But instead there will be a fake alien invasion that will stall fear on all the countries of the world and thus creating a one world government.

I’ve said too much….just wait and see.

there will be WWIII, and Iran is the trigger..

implementing fake alien invasion will be costly considering the current recession and world *ucked up economy, not to forget US hoax about NASA landing on moon was already obvious..

instead, why not utilize the already existing mass destruction weapons and new military piled technologies??
ok here how it goes (again like iraq):

USA keeps threatening the gulf about Iran (Muslims again, regardless), like the did already threaten them before by the Ghoul Saddam Hussien who got his plans crushed already by 1998.

*attempts are noticed, recently US claims one Iranian Maniac wanted to assassin the Saudi Ambassador)*

US will buy some Iranian Sheea’s to cause internal threats inside Gulf countries, Gulf royal families and government will feel real threat, and falling in the same mistake again, supporting US and NATO (and paying their bills) + fueling their jets with free gulf oil

US strikes Iran,
Iran strikes Israel/gulf
*Arab Nations Confused as usual:*
*who the fuck shall we support this time?*
US strikes again
China and Russia supports Iran
WWIII and have a good day

i’ve said too much too..

More points in favour for Kuwait

– Unlike Dubai, Kuwait still maintains its heritage buildings from the Souks to Jahra Gate.
You go to Dubai and there is no history whatsoever,
everything is brand new. So spick and span. It feels like you’re in one giant spaceship.

– Another thing, I hardly see any animal life other than birds. There are no cats. And that should not be such a big deal except on a recent trip in Dubai I had to cross a bylane to get to the Metro and came face to face with a rat the size of a cat. With the number of cats we have here in Kuwait, no rat would have the guts to do that 🙂

I don’t get it, what is this website? Why am I seeing so much incitement? WTF is wrong? This is so fucking retarded.

How stupid can you be to get in such debates?
