About the DSLR ban

Has any paper other than the Kuwait Times mentioned anything about the DSLR ban in Kuwait? A lot of news sites online have been posting about the ban and their only source is Kuwait Times. Isn’t that a bit odd?

It seems to be complete rubbish. It’s the only source and the reaction by many has been somewhat of an overkill. It’s Kuwait Times!!! Not a serious paper. These days we don’t even trust serious papers. The Watan TV (and I heard about an LA paper) were also reactions to the same article.

So its illegal to use the DSLR but i am free to use my Rangefinder ? i guess selling the DSLR and getting the Rangefinder was a smart move!

The article in Kuwait times was obviously written by a bored person that wanted to stirr things up in Kuwait a bit. Well, he succeeded ! Good thing my DSLR is broken. Ps what is gizmodo (I haven’t been here long so still finding thing out about kuwait) 🙂

Isnt kuwaitimes the same newspaper that wrote something about allowing foreigners to drink in 5 stars hotels ?… which turned out to be rumor

got this new filter system for my wide angle and the new 70-200 VRII but because of this rumor, can’t get myself to shoot outside! damn! damn!

It’s in the Guardian today. We should write Kuwait Times and complain about publishing rubbish about our country. It’s irresponsible and completely unprofessional.

very very very sad news, and personally i am ashamed that my government came up with such a BS law.

Other countries try to take as many steps forward, yet the kuwaiti government are trying to take as many steps backward.

PRIORITIZE!! come up with real useful laws that will benefit the people.

maa agool illa ‘alla kareem alla kareem alla kareeeeeem, ee hawin iljar7 il aleem’

I hate this law its so ridiculous some of the laws the government come up with is a joke. I hope this doesn’t stick and the youth of kuwait can go onto expressing their artistic abilities; I hope kuwait stops taking one step forward then two steps back.

So far as I know from a (somewhat) reliable source, this is the result of a Kuwait Times photographer being kicked out of a place for taking pictures without getting permission from the management first. This source also went on to say that the Kuwait times is the only newspaper banned from taking pictures of military and police functions. However I will treat this a rumor and hearsay until all those facts are checked.

I am surprised no other newspaper is going directly to the ministry to get a comment about this law. Does anyone know if someone can just call the ministries mentioned and ask?

The news story is hoax and is not mentioned in any of the 14 main arabic news paper. I hate to read the negative comments in all the popular sites like gizmodo about Kuwait and middle east when the story is ridiculously fake.

I’ve been trying to contact Kuwait Times since yesterday and there is no response from them. The contact section on their website specifically says NO PHONE CALLS, PLEASE (with capital letters)!!!!

I was hopping someone can get in touch with them and confirm these news. The guy who is responsible for this mess is called Abdullah Al-Qattan, anybody can get hold of him?

The reason behind it is that iphones and new cameras have longitude and latitude so it could be easily traceable if anyone commits a crime and with DSLR they cant track the origin .. Its amazing what you learn in tv shows

@Randomness

WTF are you talking about.

Now the FO (British Foreign Office) has gotten involved, and have asked the Kuwait embassy in UK for comment as per https://bit.ly/dPEhV7

It also made it to dpreview.com @ https://bit.ly/gGGhdJ

According to ITP, they are banned everywhere:

“The cameras are now banned in malls, on streets and anywhere in public.”

@ Burhan so what if they’ve gotten involved and asked questions?
@ Mark even if they don’t have, I’m just saying that it could be a reason for banning it

My canon 7D cleared customs today, so there shouldn’t be a ban.. Also I asked the the person at call center because of how worried I was, and she said no there is no ban.
