Cars, Cops and Trailers

copcheckpoint

According to a friend of mine, he was driving down the 2nd Ring Road a couple of nights ago and got stopped at a traffic light. There was a cop walking amongst the cars looking for violators or potential violators and because my friend was on the phone, the cop told him to park on the right hand side where some cops were handing out violations. Since my friend had just recently renewed his car registration, the registration paperwork was with his driver. So what was supposed to be a ticket for talking on the phone while driving turned into a car impoundment. So they loaded up his car onto a trailer with a bunch of other cars, all standard stuff so far but here is where things get interesting.

So my friend calls his mum to come pick him up. When his mum arrives the cop saw that his mum had come to pick him up so he called my friend over and told him to go to the trailer and pay the driver KD10. The trailer guy will then drive down the street away from the main road and dismount his car for him. And it wasn’t just my friend, there were 5 other guys who were told to go pay the trailer guy KD10 to have him dismount their cars down the street from the checkpoint.

If you were going to let the guys off the hook why not just dismount the cars right there? Why dismount them down some side street away from the main road? And then on top of that why do they have to pay the driver KD10? The whole thing sounded a bit shady to me so I wanted to post about it and hear some opinions on this.

you shouldn’t have posted this on your blog Mark. i hope you don’t get into any troubles because of this.

C’mon.. you know why.
you’ve good readership and definitely someone at the higher-ups will read this and investigate/inquire about it and whoever is doing that stuff what you mentioned in your blog is also doing with someones approval. idk..

i may be wrong but whats happening is this:

they tow your car to an impound.

the 10kd is the fee for the tow.

in this case, instead of the cop making you go to the impound and paying the tow fee and collecting your car, hes making you pay and collecting your car at whatever street instead of the impound.

they do it for illegally parked cars mostly and also for punishment for breaking some traffic laws.

in this case the officer used his discretion and took pity on the person in question and made them just pay the ticket and for the tow

If your car is impounded, its impounded for a reason. Having the tow driver drive down the road and dismount offenders cars for 10KD is a joke. How are people supposed to learn without getting punished?

Yup, this sounds like the usual procedure although I must say your friend was very lucky coz he had someone quickly arrive at the scene. If the car is impounded on a Thursday night they take it to the impound lot behind KPTC depot in Sharq, where it stays all throughout the weekend and when you pick it up on Sunday morning after paying two days rent + towing fee + whatever other charges.

My old office in Dar Alawadi used to give me an excellent view into the impound lot and you don’t wanna see how they handle cars there. The workers park so close that all the doors get dinged and a few times I’ve even seen workers walk across the tops of cars to move around.

Finally, the most horrifying situation is getting it towed to Subhan impound lot! I knew a guy who had his car taken there and the lot is impossible to find!

Mark, I recommend you remove this post before an investigation happens and surely they will call for you and ask for your friend name and contact details.. just remove it, you don’t need this..

Happed to my dad. He is a taxi driver. Police took his car for no fucking reason what so ever. Everything was fine with car and him. They kept his car for 5 days in ramadan. Few days back same thing happened. Kuwait is getting pathetic.no place for people without wasta.

That’s the tow fee. They let it off the side to avoid suspicion because they are doing your friend a favor bruv.

Also, if he wanted a receipt he could wait until the Sunday when he picks up from the lot. Otherwise, 10 is actually much cheaper than what he really would have had to pay.

Tell your friend the cops gave him a nice time.

what attitude? just didn’t wanted Mark to get into any troubles for this. we all know how things go if you piss someone here, esp. if someone is an authority. so calm down, i didn’t mean what you think..

You need to forward this in Arabic to Adel Hashshash, some senior officer you probably have already heard of, he’s like their PR guy or something. he usually replies back.

its a lot better to pay rather than get ur car impounded.
I feel that’s a good thing or the officer was just nice this day.
but I dnt get it, this 10 kd is like a fee or just giving the tow driver sme money on the side ?

it’s typical arrogant cop behaviour, they have to tow the car “because they said so” but then they don’t want to deal with the paperwork etc so they let the guy off the side so that they don’t lose face and the longer it takes the better just to piss the guy off and intimidate him. you don’t have any rights here so cops can mess around with you as they please until you get a decent bedouin lawyer with a lot of wasta to stand up for you. Also yeah kuwait has become near unlivable without wasta.
