A reader emailed me to tell me that Kaifan Co-op recently installed Cash Guard machines. I’ve seen them before I think at the Shamiya Co-op and thought they were pretty cool. Basically it’s connected to the cash register and once your total is tallied up you pay the cashier and they place the money into the machine which then spits out the change if any.
Now I’m curious to know how much money was actually going missing from the regular cash registers that the Co-ops had to resort to installing these what I am guessing expensive machines? I found a video on YouTube on how they work which you can watch below.

These have been around for a while now. The Zahra co-op in Zahra, South Surra has had them ever since it opened a year+ ago.
They have been in jam3iat al
Shamya for over ayear
yeah thats where i had seen them before, shamiya. i dont think i’ve been to any other co-op.
all train stations and most of the grocery shops in Japan have these. whenever i had problem with change i just pick my highest bill and buy a train ticket and get change i could use in other places 🙂
yeah look at this thing failing miserabley.
i mean notice all the cash in the add were perfectly staraght and new.
this thing is going to test peoples patients
GO Kaifan 😉
And after this, what if 99% buyers want to use K-Net?
Also… the only difference I saw in this, I may be wrong, is that instead of a conventional drawer opening and the cashier placing bills in it, here he/she feeds in the notes in designated slots one by one. Is that all or am I missing something?!
This is not to prevent thefts by employees (that’s easily monitored and controlled). Its to prevent armed robberies which are becoming almost a weekly occurrence at co-ops (mainly in the 3agad areas).
That’s a good point. If the cashiers can’t get into the cash registers neither can the robbers.
Armed robberies every week? What is this place? The Wild West?
“Armed robberies every week? What is this place? The Wild West?”
LOL I agree ^
I don’t know. I find this system to be useless and expensive. Is there really any need to change the current system used in Kuwait? Crime rates here are low and I rarely hear about theft and robberies particularly at cash registers. I just don’t find it necessary to be using a rather complex way of payment when you don’t need it.
@ Cajie and Othman (who are living in a fantasy world),
(From today’s Arab Times):
KD 2,000, call cards stolen: Police are looking for unidentified persons who allegedly broke into a cooperative society and escaped with KD 2,000 in cash and prepaid telephone cards worth KD 10,000, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
Personnel from the Criminal Evidences Department have lifted fingerprints to identify the culprits.
@Adam.
I am not denying the robberies (I read the Arab Times too).
My comment was related to one robbery per week..which seems a bit of an exaggeration.
There are other cost-effective solutions:
1. Security Cameras
2. Guard armed with AK-47 with orders to shoot on sight.
Just kidding. It’s their money. They can do what they want.
@ Cajie: the wild west?? yeah, its getting there… lol!
@ blond
