Kuwaiti artist Fatima Al Qadiri got a lot of hate here the last time I posted about her, and now she’s featured as the new band of the day in the Guardian. Even though it doesn’t mean much being in the Guardian, at least she’s being appreciated instead of being attacked. [Link]

*mind fuck*
اللهم اني صائم مابي افطر عليها
🙂
iheyah sengaliya?
I was just thinking the same thing. Maybe she’s half-half? cuz Al-Qadiri is a well known Kuwaiti family.
Senegal Born doesn’t mean she’s Senegali? I wasn’t born in Kuwait but I’m Kuwaiti.
I just listened to the Nguzunguzu remix of her track. Not bad, kinda like a mix between minimal and a bit of dubstep. Reminds me of a remix I heard of Booka Shade’s “Mandarine Girl”.
WTF ?! and why the hell is she doing like she is praying something in the picture ? i mean why is she mixing religion with her Ugly Music ?! why do i feel that she is some kind of Redneck.
You appear confused, with many questions. Let me answer one for you: You think she is “some kind of redneck” because you’re racist and ignorant (do you know what a “redneck” is, really?).
Nasty Fugly Freak!
Garbage. The guardian probably needs a controversial subject.
When I read all these hate comments I just had to listen to the music..
I hated it because it’s not the style of music I listen to, but why all the hateful, nasty comments?????????
I applaud her for being creative and having the guts to do something (knowing our sick culture that ridicule anything they don’t like) other than seating her fat ass in Pinkberry Jabriya.
+1
People here are conformists, no individualism PERIOD ANYWHERE
While I agree to what you say in principle, but that doesn’t mean one must like this girl’s work or be labeled as a conformist.
You don’t have to like the work, but these comments are ridiculous. There is actual, legitimate criticism, and then there’s petty nonsense (e.g. “she’s not Kuwaiti”) masquerading as such.
lol here starts the negative comments all over again 😛
Are you kiddin, of course The guardian will feature a Kuwaiti artist in a burqa chanting hypnotic Islamic chants!!!!!
It doesn’t make her music any less garbagey than when you last made us hear it! Oh precious few minutes I’ll never get back 🙁
no such thing as hypnotic islamic chants.
مو كويتيه.
Loool I love this defense, anything you don’t like is “Not Kuwaiti” because Kuwaitis have to be perfect. It’s my second favorite line behind any criticism of government officials being followed with LEAVE IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT
your comment is full of assumptions derived from your own perception of ”not kuwaiti” phrase means … doesn’t look good nor sound good … and what if she is not kuwaiti?
dont mean you go all Bruce Lee on the lady!
So…What if she isn’t Kuwaiti? It seems a pointless thing to say, unless you’re implying some sort of value judgment by saying it.
she’s kuwaiti.

She should dress properly, this photo is disrespectful to Islamic laws.
Hopefully some salafi will put a fatwa on her and do humanity a big favor. LOL
Not only the clothes, but the supplicating posture, as if she’s making du3a2 (which is an act of worship). Turning an act of worship into a freak show mockery just to make some sort of ridiculous nonsensical artistic statement. Great timing too, since it’s Ramadan and everything. Du3a2 mustajab inshallah. Apparently the best way to show your reverence for Islamic tradition and “the sacred Islamic songs of old” is to use them as a gimmick to draw attention to your artsy fartsy endeavors.
In the previous post I described how this stuff would be received by foreign hipsters who don’t know what they’re listening to. This review by the Guardian is a perfect example of that. “Arabic atmospherica”…what is this I don’t even.
To sum up my assessment of this piece of art, I ponder the following query: Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like? I didn’t think so, and so can you. Assalamu alaikum wa rahmat Allah barakatuhu. Ay shay.
Why is it always revenge people seeking in the name of God and Islam in particular; when one of God’s 99 names is peace ? let the people free to do what they need to do for God is the Judge ” الحكم; another name for God”
I am a Muslim and I find it primitive how we react in rage and revenge every time we see something at an art exhibition or a magazine!
Art is about shocking and discomfort which people are not use to in our part of the world for the stimulations are extremely inadequate, when people understand that and get used to it then they will be able to contain their anger and or excitement.
who said anything about revenge… its called opinion.. criticism… Dont even bring the word revenge or such connotations into this argument oh because we are descussing Islam…
if she wants to be an artist thats fine…
that dont mean she disrespects religions and faiths .. the way she portrays islamic prayer like that with her not so modestly showing her shoulders….. Muslims know what i mean.
P.S.
Loved what lulz said: “Turning an act of worship into a freak show mockery just to make some sort of ridiculous nonsensical artistic statement. Great timing too, since it’s Ramadan and everything. Note to Mark: thats a bad decision to post this in Ramadan … its a Holy month … cherished by Muslims… posting this insult… controversial piece is just not right… This is not censorship this is RESPECTing Muslim in Ramadan. Nice going.
Fatima’s Art is also an opinion.

Well, I think that her appearance and performance are more respectfull than the subject of an earlier post:
Why are car window tints illegal?
quote
“If you’re a girl and you’ve ever been on the Gulf Road at night you obviously know how irritating it can be having guys hovering around you in their cars trying to hit on you. Car tints offers the girls privacy which keeps them safe. If a guy can’t see the girl inside clearly he’s very unlikely going to try and harass her.”
end quote
These crimes are an unacceptable impairment of physical integrity of girls and women. In my opinion freedom and personal security are way more important than your religious vision on Fatima Al Qadiri.
Respect.
She lives in New York, there are no Islamic laws
i7lif? REALLY?
Ever thought of the word “respect” religions and faiths?
If she wants to be an artist that her own issue… but putting a viel and doing the muslim prayer .. with her shoulders showing … is disrespectful … and demeaning… an ill taste as an artist…
Just dont go their .. people take their beliefs seriously … some people have red lines in their lives.. mothers … personal belongings.. etc.. religion is on the top for some…
get it?
I love how you just proved my side of this debate in your comment above. Emphasis on “religion is on top for some”.
If you don’t like it, don’t trash it and hate on it. You have every right to have an opinion, but it doesn’t mean you shove it down everyone’s throats on this page!
I’m sure if you go through your itunes you’ll have a Madonna or a Lady Gaga song somewhere. These two artists have been criticized deeply by people like you who lack an open mind. I understand that it may be disrespectful to portray religion in such a manner, but it is her opinion being shared. This is how she feels about about it and art is an expression (if I am not mistaken).
Get it?
Have you tried getting over yourself? We get it. You think it’s disrespectful. I think you’re reaching, personally, because not everyone is going to worship the same way you do. I love how you find someone’s bare shoulders disrespectful, that right there is not making Muslims look bad AT ALL. For all the complaints about Islam getting a bad rap, you’d think people would quit getting bent out of shape at any attempt at a positive portrayal.
oh please! and what about the Hijab “bo tafkha” with the holloween makeup is that respectful?
I agree.
It isn’t respectful, but this is worse.
Nah, she shouldn’t do anything, because it isn’t any of your business what she has on.
And I thought Friday by Rebecca black was the worst song ever!
And now, the worst song ever is ‘My moment’ by Rebecca Black. Hey, let’s start hating on her again!
well you have to admit, she is unique.
in being disrespectful.
I just listened to the song and read part of the article.
The song is pretty chill. I did like the remix more, however the original song is still pretty decent.
For those wondering about the “sacred Islamic songs” that she grew up with, bear in mind it never said that she grew up in Kuwait so she could have spent a great deal of time in Senegal in her youth. There are many African Musicians that have created what they feel are Islamic songs that fuse two things that they feel are beautiful. A great example is the song Tapha Niang from Toumani Diabate’s album “Boulevard de l’Indépendance”. Beautiful music but many of the lyrics are verses from the Quran. Needless to say it happens a lot.
Whether you like it or not, that how it is so deal with it.
As for “Arabic atmospherica”… Atmospherica is not music that you are meant to dance to, its just music that acts as, for lack of a better term, aural wallpaper that sets the mood.
But what do I know, I’m probably a hipster that digs everything because it’s “ironic”
derp.
I’ve lived in Senegal for 2 years and Ghana for 3 years. Super nice people, very rich culture. However, this vile garbage has nothing to do with Senegalese culture. In fact, and I’m not joking, she would probably be considered possessed by the devil in Senegal and subjected to all kinds of violent ‘cures’ for producing this noise.
LOL it does sound like something from an exorcist movie. I had to stop listening to it as she sounds very scary and i dont want to have nightmares.
Oh I agree that this music is not something that would be appreciated by different people.
I only mentioned the culture because of the fact that there are muslims there that fuse music and religion as a response to people saying there was no such thing as sacred Islamic music, when in some parts of Africa, there is. It was not my intention to insinuate that this was directly inspired by senegalese music.
this is ART !! you go girl xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
hahaha OMG kel hatha 7eqd ? or everyone of you guys is showing his talent by knowing every single thing in the whole world !! go write a novel about something will get you famous instead of being powerful here !! get a life babes
you go fatma ;*
Even Paris Hilton was featured in the guardian =)… fact is, anyone can be famous nowadays… it’s disgusting.
I like this. I wish there were more of her.
Guys,
I agree she is not doing good with the poster, but indeed need to admit … she is F%$@ unique … i dont like her music … but she HAS GUTS!!
a guy running naked has guts…
and Ghandi pushing for independence has Guts..
Difference?
Ghandi was pushing for a good cause…
The guy running naked with this girl .. are pushing through insult for uniquness…
“Even though it doesn’t mean much being in the Guardian.”
The Guardian is one of the world’s leading liberal news organizations with further global reach than the New York Times. So, I would say it DOES mean much.
It definitely comes after the NYtimes, and even in the U.K, both the daily mail AND the Times are way ahead in terms of subscribers and daily rotation of copies. Plus, don’t even get me started on their biased reporting.
no it doesn’t.. its just a big business… with its own agenda .. like every other media business… with big money backing giving it stronger reach … pushing their own AGENDA… FOX NEWS is the latest example… and so on..
She is the daughter of a Kuwaiti diplomat and Thuraya Baqsami and she’s a very warm and sweet person who loves her country and who is trying to develop her creativity. Instead of hating on her, people should support her for trying even if its something they don’t understand or dislike….
You don’t have to like Nietzsche or even understand him to still applaud him for being creative and coming up with something new to contribute to humanity.
YES!
to the haters:
Stop being trolls. It gives you e-wrinkles.
She seems to be deluded as to what is real Islamic art and vocals, and what is her own form of gibberish with notes of the Arabic Language. Its really obvious shes trying to be unique in a way where she can present herself as the muslim-type girl, that can adapt and change her ways but still be true to her “Islamic culture.
That is b.s, she is using her identity as a half-kuwaiti to somehow have an edge over those hipsters up in the city. Add to that some arabic vocals, that ALL Newyorkers fear. and viola! you’ve got yourself some scarrry goth tune that solely targets those undergroung junkies dealing dime bags in washington heights. This ain’t art. Stop mindfucking people.
+1
+1 , I think shes going to be Big . Islam now “Fatwa Fatwa jihad jihad” in the eye of average Americans , but with Miss Fatima “art” she will show them that the nasty blody religion is actully deep mysterious humping and bourqo “niqab” is a big part of this mysterious spiritual religion or what ever her “Art” message would impact on westerns .
I laughed hard when I heard her song ” Al salamo alikom warahmato Allahi … ” . But that’s a different story with westerns who are Thirsty and afraid from Arabic and Islamic culture
let me put this discussion to an end

I’m not into her kind of music, but I support the fact that she is willing to express herself. Isn’t anybody sick of duplicates, anyway? Seriously, when are people going to accept that others have FREE WILL and are INDIVIDUALS? It’s so ignorant how people don’t realise that already.
I say yes, she should be going against the social norm. It’s about time somebody did, anyway.
