Parking Illegally Outside Parking Lots

Why do people not like parking inside multistory parking lots? We have probably the cheapest parking rates in the world and yet loads of people prefer parking illegally right outside the parking lot instead of legally and safely inside.

I was with a friend last time who was looking for parking in his brand new expensive car in a tight back road barely hitting other cars who were coming down the road the wrong way and I was like dude, look on your left, there is an empty multistory lot just go inside and park there wtf?

I’m not complaining, its actually better for me since this way I’ll always find parking inside those lots but I’m just really curious to why people don’t like multistory lots and I know it can’t be just a financial reason.

The parking lot is a trap. It steals your cars soul to be inside the building. It’s healthier for the car to get some sunshine

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Best comment in 2019 😀

As funny as that comment is I wouldn’t be surprised if someone here actually believed that carparks are a place where there is Jinn presence (like toilets etc) and if you don’t say a special exit du’aa before you leave, a Jinn might hijack your body while you exist the carpark and then you need to be exorcised by a zeeran beating lol

Hi Mark,

Sometime it’s because they feel it might take a lot of time finding space inside the parking lot, thereby making them late.
But mostly, it’s just the financial reason.

ohh, they can afford the new Range Rover & Porsche or the Mercedes , but after the middle of the months many hardly can afford the petrol so the 200 fils is an extra luxury that they cant afford it.

Ah yes… Audi, range rover, land cruiser, lexus, BMW; all fairly new.
Definitely the financial reason.

I find it very interesting you used the phrase “they feel it might…making them late” as if the law(!) doesn’t apply if you have feelings, and also late for what?

To answer Mark’s question, people have a mentality that those who pay for parking are suckers because paid parking is a scam, and why would you when personal convenience is more important than the public good.

That’s one of my biggest pet peeve here. People CONSTANTLY complain about how bad traffic, park, basically anything car related is here. Yet they park in completely random places, drive on the shoulder, and have zero regard for decency when it comes to

What’s even worst is the people who actually get inside the parking decks, and still park illegally while the highest levels are practically empty.

Whenever I stumble upon a mystery such as this one that makes me confused, I fall back to the universal answer that explains the universe and everything else: “It is because 98% of people are complete retards”.

It may not be a popular or correct answer, but so far worked well for me.

Yes! So confusing to why people do this. My assumption is that they’re to cheap to pay 300 fils, and it’s a shorter walk to where they want to go. As others have mentioned

But unlike you, it pisses me off cause they block the roads.
I wish fines would double if the illegal parked car is right on the street next to it.

Some people would just prefer to park their car right inside the shop they want to visit.
Damn those small mall entrances.

Not being lame – In my case not much familiar with the city area so dont know which is a parking lot, just couple of weeks back I might have spent 15mins to locate the parking lot. Just to reach the parking lot was such a big hassle as huge cars were parked although there were yellow and black lines on the Kerb. The entrance to the parking lot would have a small sign ‘P’ written on it, not always sure if it is public parking or the ones means for that building/offices. In above case I wanted to enter a parking lot, only to be told by security who came after a min. or so that it is not a public parking…. had to back the car up in that slope. Public Parking lots could be easily identified for ease of use. Cheers J

When I worked near Arraya (close to where you work), I used to try getting parking in that complex almost every other day of the week. Not only did I not get parking every single time, I also wasted upto 30 minutes going up and down, waiting in queue and had to pay the parking fee (at the exit) despite the fact that I did not get parking. Hence was put off and never bothered trying that or any other parking tower. (Although I did try the one under that souk al mubarkiya where it was 50/50).

Not everybody drives luxury brands; 7 out of 10 drivers are regular office workers on a salary with regular vehicles .Many of them wont be able to find a decent parking spot near their offices especially in the city.

Not to forget except where you live Mark; not many residential areas have public parking lots where regular people can park their cars near their homes.

Plus its not 200 fils for parking every where. In some places its 250 fils with an additional 100, or 150 fils per hour after the first hour .Regardless the amount; for many of them to shell out close to a dinar, dinar-250 if not more per day for 8 hours parking in a decent parking lot is not an option. Then add to that additional parking charges for after work hours

At the end of the day or the month for a working man on minimum wage with a family and bills to pay ; those per day parking bills add up and parking is never very high on the family’s priorities list.

Good point could add up to around 800 fils per day, that’s still not bad.

Also the main concern here is those who park wrong when they are right next to a parking building in the city, not other areas.

Only when the police are more stringent to give off 5kd fines then we will see people go to the more “economical” route

The only place I park outside is when I go to Crystal Tower, it’s always packed so I have to park on the roof and well… you know crystal tower’s parking lot is a struggle to get all the way up with all the turns :/

I think it is financial reasons only. If the parking inside these parking lots was free, you would see many more people parking there.
Btw, its not just 200 or 300 fils. That’s assuming all that park do so only for an hour. For the ones that go to work in the city, the whole day parking could be close to a KD a day if you work long hours, and then do the math for the whole month

One of my enduring pet peeves, especially with expensive cars parked outside in summer under the blazing sun when the parking garage next to them is half empty… I just don’t get it!

It’s probably because most people don’t carry cash anymore. parking lots should have the option of paying by knet.

Not sure if i have the privellege or misfortune to be working in a office which is in crystal tower. Its rare that you’ll find a parking post 8.15 am in those building, but its very likely that you’ll find 99% of the people with expensive SUV’s and Pickup’s parking on the pavement. even before the parking is full.

But the cops too know that those are all the people they don’t want to fine, so its not very often that you’ll see a cop fining the cars on the pavement there.
But they do enjoy fining the expats just parked outside waiting to pick up someone from the building.

I am always in Crystal Tower, I know both lots there are full so I park across the street behind burger and lobster and so do other people in crystal. No biggie.

Because it is hot outside and people prefer to walk the shortest possible distances in such heat.

Because public parking lots are not well maintaned and most of their elevators are out of service probably… and the stairs are often not well maintain.

Because public parking lots are not often well lit, lack security cameras and don’t feel safe for ladies to walk alone.

All of the above is because the public parkings are typically owned and managed by a public company. it is always good to bring it to the ground and then have a cousin of one of those managing this company buy it, implement bare minimum improvement and triple the parking prices.

This is something I too have been wondering for long. Like you said, Kuwait has one of the cheapest parking fees, yet people driving expensive cars have no money to park safely inside. It doesn’t make sense.

I too work in a building that is quite close to Crystal Tower and parking buildings around are always full. The unpaved open-area behind Abu Dhabi Bank will always have space for a few more cars, no matter at what time of the day, you chose to start your working-day.

Some people they have fear or phobia to park in parking lots such as my sister, somehow they feel something terrible might happen ( collapsing, fire etc..) and get stuck inside the building especially when its crowdy, not to deny many people are lazy

I think traffic would be greatly improved if the traffic police assigned one person to just give parking tickets to all these cars on a daily basis. Many people are cheap and would rather leave their cars parked illegally rather than pay the parking fee. So the solution is to make it financially not viable for them to continue this practice.

I remember in Salmiya in the days before Family Bookshop was demolished there was a big yard next to it and it was always full of parked cars. After that this yard was converted to a paid parking lot and miraculously it became completely empty and people parked on the border of this parking without going inside. And I think this was before the 200 fils price hike!

That yard didn’t get converted to a paid lot, it’s a building that is being constructed and has now stopped midway. I wish it did get turned to a paid lot at least you had the option to park there instead of the situation it’s currently in.

Everyone can afford it, it’s pretty damn cheap actually. However some people, like myself don’t carry cash around. I don’t like to. However the other side to it is that some people are just cheap af.
