I see these muffler extensions every now on then on cars and I have no clue what they are. What do these extensions do?
Update: Here is the answer given by Meshoo
They are called spark arresters, some cars have them built in the mufflers, but some don’t, it is a safety requirement (though an ugly one) for these cars to be able to enter the oil fields…because some oil/gas production facilities might have a leak that may cause a fire or an explosion if a car does not have such an attachment and cruises near by a facility.

If you open it, you’ll find peanut butter.
Spark Arrester like Meshooo said, its required by oil companies KOC, Texaco, etc.. if the vehicle is operating in their sites.
thanks h2o, u must be a fellow employee in the oil sector…KOC here
Meshoo i think you work for an oil company or oilfield services 🙂
how old is this! you just noticed them!!!
Inside, little machine elves chew muffle your sparks with their bellies.
Meshooo is correct.
All Oil field Employee’s/Contractor’s Vehicles must be fitted with a spark arrestor like this.
It comes with different sizes to match with your exhaust pipe.
Attn SWOS: (please note the point)
The approved Brand name is “Nelson” and it is available with companies like M/s Fares Al Dabbous, M/s Arabi Enertech etc,
Some cars already have this installed like the Toyota Camrys last yr and therefor were exempt from KOC/JO requirement. Oilfield here too.
no vehicle enters an oil refinery without it
As the guys before said, they’re spark arrestors.. my company gave me a car with spark arrestors on 🙁
