A few people emailed me a link to this video on YouTube where two AIS school teachers trash Kuwait. Judging by the viewers comments the two teachers should probably go into hiding. [YouTube]

Hang on a minute. They’re moaning about Kuwait because they like cold weather, green countryside, and want to be in a Christian community. Well, go figure. Clearly a perfect match. Honestly, some people make you wonder – and they’re teaching kids into the bargain. A couple of rocket scientists.

I used to like them. Oh well, they put themselves in this dumb situation. Youtube? Seriously?!

OK this one’s a real catch and I expect an onslaught of childish comments to fill this page in no time… Mark you have a masochist streak!

Here’s my take on this, as a Kuwaiti:

1. These 2 teachers come from beautiful and green Colorado and the barren landscape that we have in Kuwait must’ve been tough on them. BUT.. were they tricked into coming by a fake brochure/website with pretty green photos? No… so it was really their choice and they should own up to that

2. They seem to be evangelical Christians, in which case even New York or most of secular Western Europe would seem alien to them. Why are they here in one of the most religious countries in the Middle East? Were they kidnapped and brought here against their free will? Surely not

3. The part where they say Islam is inseparable from government and daily life is very true and you all know it. Most Kuwaitis feel that’s how it should be… I don’t

4. All in all, they spoke politely in an easygoing manner. Imagine if this was some drunken tirade full of foul language

5. I’ve never believed in “Get The F**K out”… I’m more “You really don’t have to stay if you’re unhappy”

A very fair-minded response. I just found the video highly amusing for the rather dim-witted nature of the remarks. It was like listening to someone complain about a cold drink because it was cold.

He kept scratching himself.

That bothered me more than his crappy cliche “I’m American, I like to play the role of the Survivor in everything” attitude.

Not only were they not forced to work here, as teachers their job is to be role models to their students. By posting a video on youtube about how unhappy they are and how they live in a dessert, they are setting a horrible example to the students.
Finally, the picture they showed of Kuwait were impossibly wrong. Yes, they were taken in Kuwait, but it was the worst part of Kuwait. I could go to Colorodo, picture a dump, and pass that off to everyone as how Colorodo really looks.
The video is extremely biased, judgmental, and frankly, overly dramatic.

The thing is… The way they talked was rude. Islam is “terrifyingly constrictive” … and “void of freedom.” It’s not true. They are spreading the wrong message about Islam. Surely it is totally different than their own culture, but we as Muslims do what we believe is right and what Allah (SWT) asked us to do and we follow the Phrophet Mohamad’s (PBUH) teachings. We are conservative and Kuwait is strict in implementing Islamic culture which is not unreasonable at all. In fact it makes perfect sense. Kuwait is a Muslim country. People coming into the country have to abide by our rules. I’m not even Kuwaiti but I found this to be utterly disrespectful especially with the Athan in the background as they spoke about all the so-called negatives and then the switch to different music which was obviously meant to be more happy (The athan is beautiful, don’t get me wrong) when speaking of Christianity. They have no right to say Islam is too strict and so on and so forth and they say Kuwait sucks, call it a wasteland, and other things which is totally rude, especially since it is the WRONG message to spread. And Kuwait does have more beautiful areas, and Muslims do have freedom, within limits. Shame on them.

And yes it was posted seven months ago but it has just been found by a student. Regardless of when they did it, what they did is still wrong.

Tim Koehn is my brother’s teacher (whom he says is pleasant and nice by the way) and he showed me the video yesterday. However, I was really disappointed in how they chose to portray Kuwait, not just because I’m a Kuwaiti. If they think it sucks to be here, then they shouldn’t stay! No one is forcing them to.
It’s sad that they were making a religious video to enforce thankfulness in Christianity, but they chose to show this by demeaning another religion and country.

Dear Teachers, when you took on the job of teaching kidds in schools, you supposedly gave oath to yourselves to hold your “personal” thoughts from inflicting the views of your students! Youtube is a public platform that you mnow your kids will see this, and for this I think you have betraid yoursleves. What saddens me, is that you have been in this community so long and still have not learned the ture meaning of Islam – a way of life. Freedom is advocated in Islam not confided, God’s love to you has given you the chance to make extra $$$ (if anything at all) more than what you were making in your homeland. I will not tell you what ignorants in the US say to moslims: “if you can’t take the heat get out of the kithchen”! Rather, I will tell you let’s meet and I will intorudce to moderate clean-loving-creative Moslims who will show you the brighter side of life that we enjoy over here.

i’m english and i worked and lived in kuwait for 24 years……there is a natural beauty in the desert and you can, if you so wish, drink alcohol every single day……………..these two guys are obviously very narrow minded and should seriously consider going back home………i’ve been to colorado and yes it’s a beautiful state but once you shut your front door, you can be anywhere in the whole wide world……….and to all the friends i still have in kuwait……..just to let you know that i miss you xxxx

Maybe they are trying to get turned in to the police so they can send letters to their church back home and they can get involved in international affairs because of some people’s agenda. Then they can blame Obama for not getting involved and Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly can get ratings.

Teachers in private schools are going through the same quality control process as everything else imported into Kuwait. We simply do not DEMAND quality – and that’s presumably why sh** will always get through!

That goes to show that ignorance and hate knows no culture.
No country is perfect and Kuwait has many fucked up problems but they showed only the bad side and some of the stuff they said is made up.

Whatever, we have our PR for Kuwait in the form of our many educated (even in the process of being further educated) students abroad.
I just see it like this, you’d be stupid to fall for this video and accept it as matter of substance. It’s almost child-like, and it seems like they’re attention seekers.

But what really makes this “inspiringly” ridiculous is the effort that went to produce it. Talk about two losers with plenty of time on there hands.

Just do your good and grade the fuckin papers instead of wishing that you could star in some reality show.

I visited their personal blog and I noticed that they travel all around the world specially around her in the middle east and far east.

If they are SO INTERESTED in the middle eastern culture to the point that they traveled to all of these Muslim countries why do they attack Kuwait’s geography,weather and religion? When they should be the most people who respect others cultures’ !!

As a Kuwaiti I respect all foreigners from all religions that come to work here, but if they are not interested then they should stop moaning and uploading videos on youtube.

They should respect the country that gave the opportunity to work here, I am sure that there are hundreds if not thousands of teachers from all around the world willing to get their job in Kuwait.

2. Did you really expect to have more christians in Kuwait? I am christian and was born and raised there, but I didnt have that ethnocentric attitude. You went there on your own!
3. I currently live in the States, and I am tan. I dont complain about there not being enough tan people. I was raised catholic..I dont complain about not knowing any catholics.
4. You complain about it being a wasteland, but you have a huge garden behind you.
5. I live near the canadian border, and it is too cold for me, but I suck it up and take it. If I didnt like it, I would leave. If you dont like kuwait, LEAVE! You went there by choice. No one needs you there.

everyone asks for freedom, freedom of speech etc.. so there you go why complain in order to deserve that freedom we have to respect others, and a comment from one of their postt shows that what they say cant be all that bad:

I’d like to add one more thing, nothing they said AT ALL I FOUND OFFENSIVE. Neither should anybody here. The worst they said is that Kuwait sucks, so what LOL! I feel for them, and they do have some valid points speaking from a westerners point of view.

Too many people on this blog regard Kuwait as the best country in the world, when in reality it’s NOT, neither is any other country. Have an open mind and don’t get offended when people are trying to be critical yet constructive about something you care about.
