This post is for the MMA fans here. A few years ago I posted a clip from Warriors War, a middleweight MMA tournament that took place in Kuwait back in 2001 and involved the likes of Matt Hughes, Bruce Buffer and Big John McCarthy. I was pretty surprised back then that I hadn’t heard of this tournament before but Ray Elbe sent me a link to an article a few days back that discusses the event in full details. Turns out it was a complete mess from an organizing stand point which should be no surprise but there was also a scheme to rig some of the fights. Lurking around here for years… don’t know why, but I thought I’d drop my first ever comment just to say that I actually went to this event.
The reason you probably didn’t hear about it at the time, was because it was originally advertised as a Martial Arts Demo. My dad had dabbled in Teakwondo in his university days, so he took me and my brother (who at the time was literally just a child).
The flyer in the news paper had photos of guys in Doboks (Teakwondo Uniforms) breaking ice blocks and baseball bats. Thats why he took us originally, I myself was only in tenth grade.
At the time UFC was just this super crazy thing that I had only seen in videos when I went to the states in the summer, and it was literally insane lol no weight classes or rules really.. or, at least in the videos I had seen thats what it was.
So I remember bugging out when we walked in and saw the octagon! Called up a bunch of my buddies and most of them raced to get there before it finished.
I specifically remember the place being basically empty at first and then filling up really quickly lol I guess everyone else called their friends too.
I also remember it being BRUTAL lol no one in the stands had any idea what they were seeing at the time, and it was basically one of the craziest experiences I’ve ever had in this country.
The time my dad accidentally took us to a crazy MMA tournament.
The article was super interesting, especially since it added some context to what we saw that night.
I’ve told this story to so many people, and no one believes me… I’ve moved a few times since then, but I used to have the program for the event up on my wall here for years! It wasn’t until years later that I realized I got to watch Matt Hughs fight, and got to hear Bruce Buffer do his thing too lol In Kuwait of all places…

hey thanks for the story, wish i had experienced it too but i just realized back in Feb 2001 i was still in university which explains why i hadn’t heard of it. only moved back here in august of that year i think.
how can anyone fly to another continent at your expense at a promise of winning 60k with no contract or agreement?
