Cops Aren’t Messing Around

noplates

Last week the cops announced they were going to start removing the license plates of illegally parked cars and they weren’t joking around. Yesterday I had a meeting at Arabica and while I was driving around looking for parking, I spotted not one, not two but at least a dozen cars with their plates removed. Just a whole line of illegally parked cars with no plates on them. Super freaky shit, obviously that deterred me from parking illegally so their plan is definitely working.

On the bright side, I noticed for the first time there is actually a multistory car park on the street behind Arabica so ended up parking there.

So once your plates are removed, what is your incentive to move the car? Why not leave the car there for four months until you get your plates back.

Just wait and see, there will be at least 20% of cars that will just remain where they were ‘castrated’. That will quickly pile up, and within a couple of weeks they will no longer enforce the law.

You should check out Farwaniya. There are literally thousands of abandoned cars here. People who couldnt pay the installments or just left it there and left the country. It’s mind boggling!

I thought they cancelled the removal of plates law already…..at least that’s what the Arabic newspapers said last week.

It cancelled for some situations:
KU students
Mosque goers
Hospitals
And maybe another situation

I’m not sure about the credibility of the source, but I did read it somewhere

Mosque goers are the worst. Just throw your car in the middle of the street and fuck everybody. Very hypocritical. How do you sleep at night?

It is a good move to deter people from parking illegally. Ironically, I got a ticket where there were no-parking sign. In fact there are not many no-parking signs around the city. So how do you know parking is not allowed?

This place has a deficit in traffic signs and road markings. Consider driving in the highway to find yourself exiting the highway, without any sign telling you there is an exit ahead.

Why not just stick a ticket. A fine is good enough incentive and not as intrusive as removing plates. Can’t they just follow the modern world.

OR.. OMG this is genius.. instead of buying all those drills, increase the fine!!!!!!! when can I be the ministry of interior?

1- Park
2- Remove your own plates
3- Get coffee
4- Replace your own plates
5- Drive off like a boss

(Unless they tow your car then you’re fucked)

I always tend to hear that there aren’t enough multi story parking lots around the country, but in all honesty I never had a problem finding one. Even though it is not exactly close to where I need to be at, most are at least a few minutes walk, and that’s fine.

Some people are just lazy.

Where I work there are 0 within a 30 minute walk. Not exaggeration I park on the street and walk about 10 minutes to work

I was a victim.. The upside: I was able to drive home, and I got my plates back the next day. This may be a case by case situation. The cop spoke no English. He only said to me “Jabriya, traffic.” I live in Salmiya. The process to get them back was a nightmare.. it took almost 3 hours, 2.5 driving looking for these buildings and such. I paid the 20 kd, and got them back.

Spare plates in the trunk anyone?
I think that is the most logical solution, perhaps slightly illegal.
Keep a set of spare plates (no idea where you get them) so that you can atleast drive your vehicle out of that spot without getting into trouble. Go and settle your fines and take back your original plates.

It is a far worse offense to drive with fake/stolen plates than with no plates at all; so I wouldn’t recommend this plan.
