The Chinnah Mo Kuwait Awards – 2015

chinnah

Last year I was contemplating what to get Nima (a close friend of mine) for his birthday when I decided to give him a 24 hour pass to post whatever he wanted on the blog. He’s always critical of what I write so I was like here, take my blog and see if you can do a better job. He took the pass and started thinking of various ways he could use the blog, maybe even turn it into one of his art projects.

Months after I gave him the pass we were sitting down and I asked him what ideas he had come up with and after sharing some with me one stood out. He was joking around about how he wanted to give a “Chinnah Mo Kuwait” award to a place that made you feel like you weren’t in Kuwait. “Chinnah Mo Kuwait” translates to “It doesn’t feel like Kuwait” and I thought that was actually a brilliant idea. It’s the best compliment you can give a place in Kuwait so, instead of just a 24 hour pass, I told him we should expand this idea and turn it into a proper awards with different categories and different winners. Now this is the plan, starting next week both Nima and I will be announcing winners for the following categories and in the following order:

Best Coffee Shop
Best Local Store
Best Shopping Mall
Best Bank
Best Hospital
Best Fitness Center
Best Art Gallery
Best Cinema
Best Internet Provider
Best Customer Service
Best Leisure
Best Restaurant

I won’t be editing Nima’s opinions nor censoring them. So if you have any complaints with his writing then direct it to him. Without further ado, here is Nima:

————————–

“It doesn’t feel like Kuwait”

The aspiration of anyone with means. To build a house, garden, restaurant that filter out the elements of the everyday ‘struggle’ of being here. Our mutual disdain for the loud, hot, smelly, smoggy, honk-happy traffic. To filter-out loud and obnoxious riffraff. To trip-up the loud screaming children who insist on playing football with anything remotely shaped like a ball and foot. This, my dear loathsome friends is the highest compliment we can offer.

Oh, shut up, don’t act so incredulous. You’ve said it too. Maybe you were at your grandfather’s farm or a friends chalet. And they’ve spent considerable effort to build walls up to block out the sounds of the road, mere meters away and traffic mere centimetres apart. They lined the walls with trees and bushes to block out the…lets say…overly enthusiastic sun. They’ve hired gardeners and maybe an agricultural engineer to keep the plants from incinerating. And you refuse to pay him the greatest complement in this countries vernacular?? I think not. This is so nice, it doesn’t feel like you’re in Kuwait. Chinnah Barees.

That is why we, the custodians of current events in Kuwait feel it is high time to pay the ultimate respects to the gems of this country we all call home. Here’s to that extra effort people put to be not half-assed. We are a full-assed people. Here’s to the complete package!

Chinna mo Le Kuwait or al Kuwait is the correct Kuwaiti saying.. unless you have something else in mind by removing the (AL/Le) …

I agree this sentence sums it up: “It’s the best compliment you can give a place in Kuwait” OUCH! Wth.
A classic example of when materialism creates shallow people.

What a novel idea! I’m actually interested in what the results are and what people come up with : ) What about at the end, a photographic montage of each place, for histories sake?

“And you, you selfish self-centred, patriotic to the edge of insanity, you refuse to pay him the greatest complement in this countries vernacular?? I think not.”

… Erm.. Please explain this sentence….?! Please break it down for my simple mind…

Action figure store called Dragonarab in Creative Design Center in Shuwaikh Industrial Area. looks like something out of K-town for geeks and nerds

You guys should have to winners for each category. One you guys chose and one the readers (poll)?
Or deciding the winner comes to 50% Poll and 50% you guys?

Although it would be fun to have people vote, the mass doesn’t always vote right. So for best restaurant we might end up with Prime & Toast as the winner (the horror) or Hello Kitty Cafe. I prefer curating a list but people can always voice their opinions in the comments.

Firstly, great idea. Look forward to hearing the winners and seeing your blog further highlight these unique gems! However, I think it would be better to see some finalists from your side and perhaps a final reader vote for the winner?! Anyway, I understand is your blog, so your opinions. Just a suggestion. 🙂

As I relied to another commentator, although that sounds fun the winner might not be the best, it will be the most popular. I would rather curate a list and that’s what me and Nima have done. This will be the best of the best list, a winner and a runner up.

I’m not crazy about the idea, yet I am interested about the results.

How about adding best house? Or residential area?

Love it! My favs are Pick Yo in Sharq, Al Shaheed Park, Amricani Cultural Centre and Sadu House (strange I know but it’s serene, calm and extremely well organized) so need to include the PISS building too. Look forward to seeing the list.

Tell me about this PISS building. Is it the one in sharq where foreigners go to get fingerprinted?

Nima are you phonetically challenged? I think it should be spelled Chinnah Mu Kuwait. Mo sounds like the name Moe, like the bar owner from the Simpsons.

Mark I get the concept and all, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to call such establishments “Chinna Mo Kuwait”. What message are you sending here? Especially to the future generations. How are we supposed to advance and become better if even when things go right in the middle east, we refer to them as foreign or strange?

This negative mentality has to stop. When we see a nice place or when things go right, we remember other countries. When will we start believing in ourselves?

Yes we have such behaviors, but I don’t think we should attribute all beauty and positivity to outsiders and call success stories in Kuwait “Chinna Mo Kuwait”.

I hope you get my point.

Don’t bring the rest of the middle east into this. Kuwait is unique. The greatness of a place in Kuwait is directly proportional to how “out of Kuwait” it makes you feel.

Besides, a place that makes you feel “Chinna mo Kuwait” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a successful place, as you claim.

I think before we all argue about the definition of the phonetically challenged “chinna mo (it’s mu or moo as stated above) Kuwait”… lets agree to what IS like Kuwait. I don’t think any of us has a clear impression that resonates with everyone else

I have to say, it’s offensive. It’s not offensive because you thought of it Mark/Nima. It’s offensive that this actually became a phrase. Well, it’s a little offensive that you called it “the best compliment” when you are disassociating good places with Kuwait because it’s too far fetched that Kuwait would have such places. But it isn’t your fault. It’s an actual phrase that’s fairly widely used.

I always thought it comes off bitter. You look at farmer’s market and say “Chinna moo l’Kuwait”. Really? Our farmer’s markets are very Kuwaiti from the way people dress, to their interactions, to the feeling that you have there and then. Shaheed Park “chinna moo l’Kuwait” except that Kuwait had planned the green belt since the late 60’s and it’s been part of our vision for 4 decades. It’s not an expat thing because it’s used by Kuwaitis as well… (albeit more palatable from the latter than the former).

I think it’s one thing to ignore it when it’s said in passing, but a shame to build a competition around the very principal that if it makes you feel good…it can’t be Kuwait.

You’re a great sport. I’m excited that you decided to expand on the idea too. I think some of these concepts deserve to be recognized…and that the competition will keep them honest 😉
