When I was looking for a new travel camera the Panasonic GF1 was one that looked very interesting but sadly out of my budget. Now someones just posted a field test of the camera after using it for 16 days on a trip to the Himalayas. The pictures look great and the camera sounds even more interesting now after reading his review. Kinda makes me wish I got the GF1 instead of the Canon G11, the bright 20mm f1.7 lens seems excellent. Check out the review and great shots [Here]
The camera is selling for $999 on Amazon. [Link]
Update: The camera is now selling for cheaper at $899! [Link]

i love the fact that you can use four thirds lenses (with an adapter); but NOTHING justifies that price.
Dude, I told you that micro-third is the only option for a travel camera. It’s a waste with a point and shoot.
Those pics are amazing.
cajie: its not the only option for a travel camera, thats being naive. Micro-thirds have a lot of disadvantages three being price, size and lens options. So I wouldn’t say a P&S is a waste since you might as well call DSLR’s a waste. They’re different categories for different needs.
Mark, it’s not naive. Well, at least not for me.
I’ve gone through many P&S. I even keep one in the car (Canon SX10) just in case I come across an opportunity to shoot something – but in the end, whatever pictures I take, I always end up disappointed with the result and never use them for anything.
So for me, it’s either a phone camera for those unforeseen events or a proper dSLR.
I still like the G11 and price is reasonable for the type of camera in my opinion.
A Leica is always a Leica whether Panasonic or someone else uses the brand extension. It’s sad to see with technology getting cheaper, so many hallowed brands have fallen in the dust.
I still love my Nikon D80 though 🙂
I like this one, I’ve been checking in at Amazon for a while but it’s still expensive!
Its a great camera and Ive been wanting to get it as my 5th camera but the price is bad, put more and get a 50mm F1.2 instead for your main camera unless you already have one.
too expensive…
fadibou: Since this is a micro four third camera, you multiply the lens by 2. Meaning a 50mm 1.2 would turn into a 100mm 1.2, not very practical. With the 20mm you will end up with 40mm which is closer to a 50mm.
kwt23: If you think this is expensive check out the Leica X1
i have this cam , and i love it . it took some amazing photos in barr ( desert ) last weekend .
cam cons : expensive $899 ! – wish it had panoramic mode like Sony .
lens cons : No zoom in 20mm f1.7 lens . i missed a lot of cool shots that needed a Zoom .
the GF1 20mm f1.7 produce amazing bright focused photos .
I have full frame mark so 50mm gives 50 and i am loving this F1.2.
But i wanted to get a lighter camera to carry around and GF1 was my first choice but its expensive really for a camera you will rarely use.
I was talking about using the 50mm with the gf1 not a full frame cam.
I’d really appreciate it if you had given me 2 mins of your time answering my simple question in your last post about the Canon camera ..! … after all let me know if there is a specific procedure I gotta do, so that you then, kindly pay attention or even simply look at my future posts!
No worries now anyway, I have already chosen and bought my camera. thanks to myself only !
I have no idea what u r talking about…
you have just answered there 🙂 .. after all I just wanted to know base on the specifications mentioned there on the links .. if u had to go for one of those 2 .. which one it would be … that’s all.
after all I got the Panasonic ZR1 which is the closest user friendly Point and Shoot Camera to GF1 .. and it has almost the same design too. I’m still waitin for it from DHL though.
g10 is the best
The price is back to $999 btw.
back to 899
