Skype Phone for the Mac

IPEVO

Nat’s been using Skype to call and talk to her family and friends back in Lebanon and it works pretty cool and its also fairly cheap. The problem is that talking to your family using headphones and the Apple Powerbooks built in mic is a pretty dorky experience. So I decided to look around for a phone handset that would plug-in and work with the Mac. There are many handsets available but 99% of them only work with PCs. Even some handsets that were compatible with the Mac ended up lacking features the same phone would have if connected to the PC. The coolest Skype phone I found was a cordless Linksys and at $105 it wasn’t too expensive, the downside ofcourse was that it wasn’t Mac compatible. Finally I stumbled upon the IPEVO phone which is pictured above. It looked really cool, it was fully compatible with the Mac and it only cost $29. So I ordered a white one for myself and a black one for my sister. The phone also works with PC’s so thats a bonus. Once the handsets arrive next week I will take some pictures and post my feedback on them but so far it looks like a really great device.

you know what would be cool? getting skype on the actual phone, just connect the phone to a wifi network or ethernet cable, and it will automatically load up the software + login, and u can call 🙂

I wrote about this device to skype guys around an year back and they said its very difficult for them to spend time on this kinda device at that time as they are working hard to make a stable win app version, but will defenitely look in that direction once they get somewhere half on their application roadmap. They told me that they are looking for a good technology partner to cooperate with them for such a device. its interesting to see that such a thing has come up….I will love the convenience of it…

Thanks Mark, this is really helpful. I use Skype to keep in touch with everyone in Kuwait from London but it’s always unclear from my PowerBook, even with the best Skype headsets. Do post a review of it once you try it out so I can get one if it works out well.

Wasn’t there a program that you can install on your nokia phone that can make it act as a voip phone? there are heaps of proggys around to aid you with this, i shit you not but i use my friend’s phone as an electronic guitar tuner to set up the right strings to right notes.
