Holy Cow Vegan Burger Bar

If you weren’t aware, there is currently a plant-based meat craze that’s taking over in the U.S. with brands like Beyond and Impossible both being the two most popular plant-based meat suppliers. Even fast food brands like McDonalds and Burger are both hopping onto this trend and South Park had an episode about it a couple of weeks back.

Locally, plant-based meat hasn’t really picked up yet but there are now a couple of places that offer it with one of the newest being Holy Cow. Holy Cow is a new vegan burger bar concept by the people behind the popular vegan delivery concept Clean Eats. It’s basically a burger restaurant except they’ve swapped out all the animal-based proteins with plant-based ones so you still have your meat burgers, chicken burgers and fish burgers except they’re all vegan.

They just opened up a couple of weeks back so they’re still in their soft launch phase so open only from 6PM to 10PM on Carriage. If you’re looking for a new vegan option or just curious to try plant-based meat then check them out. They’re on instagram @holycow.kw

Vegan burgers aren’t going to be viable in Kuwait until they’re as affordable as meat-based counterparts. Holy Cow have a Cheese Burger that’s KD4.500 which is a bit much, especially compared to the fact that you can get a Wagyu cheeseburger for cheaper. Hopefully when plant based meat becomes more available, prices will reflect that, until then, this is just going to be for a very specific niche of people who are willing to pay a bit extra to feel better about themselves.

If they’re specifically targeting vegans, then you’re right, choices are minimal, but is that a feasible business plan?

If prices are a bit cheaper then more people would be willing to try it, but maybe with the import rates it’s just not worth it 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s just going to be a fad here. I doubt people here will turn vegan or are vegan. Very few. Its just something to try out. A novelty thing. And that’s why prices are high too. As a customer, I would give it a taste out of curiosity. But even if it tastes good, would I go out of my way to pay again and eat it? No. I would go to a normal burger place and there are tons here. So yeah, not the best idea to introduce it here.

guys, this is a vegan burger place, if you have the option of eating real meat then you’re not the target audience. vegans don’t have an option, they have to eat plant-based meat because they can’t eat real meat. it’s not a fad or a curiosity thing for them, it’s a life decision.

The point I was trying to make is that there are people out there that would be open to changing their diet more if “healthy” options were more affordable, which for the most part, vegan or vegetarian restaurants in Kuwait are not. If this place just wants to target the already vegan, then that’s cool, but what percentage of the public is strictly vegan? Why not try to be more accessible to more people?

Then again, I’m just thinking out loud and the owners probably know what they’re doing 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes, based on my experiences, it is one of the worst places I’ve lived in, and if you can’t see that, then what are you doing that makes Kuwait a good place for you?

I have no reason to call it the worst place on earth. It has scope for improvement, like all places and it has its pros and cons, but this is a very sweeping comment.
Just as an example, a lot of friends from America tell me they find Kuwait a much safer place for their kids than America. Is that not a BIG reason to like this place?

Growing up here, I did not feel safe going to the schools because I was bullied relentlessly. Earlier this decade there was a period where I was harassed and laughed at by local men for no reason and local women were literally stalking me in malls and even taking photos of me on their phones. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg as far as my experiences living here goes.

Oh, sorry to hear that. Hope things are better now, as you say this goes back to a decade. Unfortunately bullying is rampant in a lot of place in the world, more so in the US, where it can take menacing proportions.
Kuwait for me is a nice cozy place, where you can live your life without getting into trouble most of the time

“local women were literally stalking me in malls and even taking photos of me on their phones.”

We want to know more about that.

In most of those scenarios, I was just walking with my mother and these random women would see me and start following me, and giggling like mad to get my attention. Same thing when other women would take photos, I was doing nothing and my appearance would set them off like if they were insane or something.

Robert Kiyosaki talked about Fake meat in a world moving to everything fake. For those who aren’t vegans don’t think that plant based meat products are healthy for consumption. It’s just another way of eating other fast food. The health (benefits) are similar

The target audience of Impossible burger and Beyond meat is not really the health-conscious, but rather, people who want to reduce their impact on the environment without giving up the “taste” of meat.

I do not understand the concept of plant based ‘meat’ dishes. If I was vegan or vegetarian I would not want a plant facsimile to replace the look or texture of animal meat i.e. a Christmas soy dish shaped like a turkey.

I think a roasted vegetable sandwich would be preferable and more appealing on a menu to a factory shaped meatless burger.

Thanks Mark for sharing this.
I’m interested in knowing what the bread ingredients are. Not to knock their hussle, but it looks too fluffy & white not to have animal milk, butter, or eggs in the dough.
If so, this wouldn’t be an option for any individual who has never or has stopped consuming animal meat & animal by-products.

But it’s a good option for those who are looking for a little change. And if there bread is vegan, Great! However the pricing is a bit steep to expect anyone to make it a routine ordering option.
Personally I turned to a plant based diet over 2 years ago after almost slipping into a coma from extreme hypotension. (something that’s an epidemic in Kuwait)
I gave doctors a chance to throw man made remedies my way & was told that I’ll suffer from this my whole life & there’s really no curing it. I took their advice with a grain of salt & did my own researching. That’s when I stumbled on plant based diet for wellness & to reverse disease!
Well here I am 2+ years later by God’s grace, & the bounty of a plant based lifestyle, I haven’t stepped in a doctors office since!
I had a full blood workup done twice. One 6 months after I switched & another 6 months later. Lord n behold, everything that needed to be high was high & everything low, was low.

I can write a book about all the other reasons I’ve chosen to never look back after I made the switch. When people realize that this isn’t a trend. When they realize the positive impact going vegan has for their health, animals, & our planet, maybe then they’ll understand what this craze is all about. And why vegans protest. You have to want better for yourself, your loved ones, the creatures we share our planet with, and the health of our planet.
Little FYI for those who don’t know. And this is a fact.
50% or more reason why our planet is dying (climate change) is due to animal agriculture. So before you go buy a burger & eat in it the face of a protestor, realize that they are playing the part of protector that you have failed to step up to. What’s so bad about being a hero!?

A blessing in Kuwait is that vegans/vegetarians are suppressed. In the Uk you see them protesting day and night, it makes me want to eat meat even more. I bought a burger, walked up to them and made sure they watched me eat it. You have every right to believe in anything you want to but don’t tell me what to do.

Bar is where you drink alcohol , not burgers.
Burger literally means beef patty.
Vegan is when one believes he can’t eat meat.
Lets name every hipster place a BAR – like Auto repair Bar, Underwear Bar, Fertilizer Bar:)
True vegan should’t eat(drink) things that resemble meat, just like meat eaters don’t ask for cucumbers and carrots made of beef. Just don’t cheat yourself and eat whatever ur body really needs.

Bar isn’t where you drink alcohol, bar is a piece of furniture where you sit to drink alcohol. You can also sit at a sushi bar and eat sushi, a ramen bar and eat ramen, and a burger bar to eat burgers.

Regarding your definition of burgers, thats just one of the definitions, the other definition is basically anything between two buns. https://www.dictionary.com/browse/burger?s=t

Finally, who made you the spokesperson for all vegans and who are you tell vegans what they should or shouldn’t eat?

I don’t wanna make you angry Mark, i read your blog regularly and i love it. But i really hate Vegan stuff because it almost makes no difference to our environment, except making rich people richer. If you really wanna contribute to saving environment, u can keep you car for 20 years, have 1 or 2 children and never ever eat another hamburger fried on palm oil – you know, they burn tropical forest for it? Saving environment means sacrifice and eating another juicy vegan burger won’t help it.

The whole idea about being a vegan is not to consume meat, and especially not eating soy burgers which taste like meat. Wtf is it all about- if you love the taste of meat, how in the hell are you vegan. Let’s make burgers which will taste like human flesh. It’s like you’re a cannibal, but you’re not! Awesome! Or let’s make a non-alcoholic vodka, yes, just because you love the delicious taste of vodka, but it’s forbidden to drink alcohol. Absurdity

Well your argument makes no sense and shows a complete lack of understanding of why vegans are vegans. You start off saying the whole idea about being vegan is not to consume meat, but the whole point of Beyond and Impossible is that you aren’t consuming meat. Not all vegans are vegans because they hate the taste of meat…

That’s some sort of an absurd fashionable veganism- I want to stop the suffering of the animals, but, God, they taste! delicious, so I’ll gonna eat a soy burger which tastes like real meat. It’s just ridiculous. Ok, so for you veganism is just not eating meat, because you don’t like the taste… Mmm fun

This may be the most ridiculous thing posted here. By your logic, bbq flavored potato chips are also ridiculous. Let the vegans eat their vegan food, let them be, there will not be a shortage of people eating beef, believe me ill make sure i eat the vegan’s share of beef

Mark..u said veganism is a fad here but actually there is huge communities of vegans over here! Vegan products and vegan food options are everywhere now..6 years ago when I first came to Kuwait I was suffering so much with the lack of vegan options at restaurants and super markets but now it’s everywhere.
