Wall of Kindness

take1

Basta, a local non-profit group are planning to takeover walls around Kuwait where passerby’s can hang their donated items so that others can take any of the items they need. They’re calling these walls “Wall of Kindness” and they recently setup their first one inside The Secret Garden in Salmiya.

It’s a nice initiative and I know I will be hanging the stuff I don’t need there since it’s pretty close to where I live, but I think it would make more sense to have the “take what you need” message in different languages since not everyone (specifically the low income workers) can read English and Arabic. In any case check out Basta’s instagram page [Here]

How about a wall of luxury, where we the middle class take what we need from last years out of season luxury items. Location: The Avenues – Prestige.

Live update … nothing taken, nothing placed.

I wish it was more closer to road and public eye. What generally people do is put it in a separate bag than garbage and leave it next to dustbin (not inside). Clothes and footwear are not the only things that can be donated. You don’t expect people to lug their heavier stuff to place there.

Good idea nevertheless! Just needs some fine tweaking.

The “Wall of Kindness” project is only for clothing and shoes, but Basta welcomes all kinds of donated items (anything that is no longer needed or idle in our homes). For more info on Basta, and what we collect, you can visit our Instagram account @bastakwt. Thank you for your support and words of advice, we will take them into consideration for the next wall 🙂

Bins will be more appropriate instead of subjecting donations to elements of nature. Keep the good thing going!

groan…..
so many reasons why this will fail.
hooks on walls? all around kuwait?
no quality control? no inventory management?
people will leave their used clothes and feel good about it?
reallY?!
an ‘operation hope’ type boutique – open year round – run by volunteers….would work if overhead (rent) was free, but hooks on walls with no volunteers manning it? fail, fail, fail

Kindness needs no bounds.. A great initiative, started by the Iranians, followed next by the Pakistanis and now has made its way into Kuwait.
Here’s a short clip of one of the Walls of Kindness or “Deewar-e-Mehrbani”, as it is originally called, in my country.

Bless the person who took the initiative here in Kuwait. I wish more Kindness walls to be erected in more areas in Kuwait.

Hello M 🙂 Loving the enthusiasm! Its in our plan to have one of the walls in Jleeb, please contact us at [email protected] and maybe we can work on the project together. Thank you for your supportive words 🙂

Thank you AUS for your supportive words 🙂 You are right, we were inspired by the initiatives in Iran and Pakistan, and hopefully this project can make a difference in Kuwait too!

Guys, good initiative, but seriously needs controls. All the stuff could be taken away by just one or two people..need to manage this in a way that max people benefit and there is no hoarding/ abuse

This is where you have to leave things to the honor system. Trust that people are nice. Will someone hoard all the stuff only to later sell it later? Probably, but the person doing that is perhaps in a really bad place financially to do something like that without any guilt. Can you really blame the guy who makes less than 100KD a month doing something like that?

maybe it can be an open area where there’s more public, so the person picking up will just take what required rather than bagging everything . great initiative good luck.

The idea is splendid but proper managerial skills will be more appropriate in the sense that it should not just be wall but some kind of shelter where someone is in charge to help stop people who will bring truck to convey the items to be sold at the Friday market.
The shelter will also keep away dust and the scotching sun from fading colored fabrics.

Thank you Shani! The shelter idea is great, we will try to create on for this wall and all future walls to protect the donated items from Kuwait’s weather. Unfortunately we won’t be able to have someone volunteer to man the wall the whole time, as “lolguy” mentioned , we hope the honor system will be in control. This is not just a campaign about donating but one that we hope will create a social and moral change.

I like to create a wall of kindness in salmiya and in other places? Does it require a special permission from the municipality?
