A walk down memory lane – The Family Bookshop

I passed by Family Bookshop today and took as many pictures as I could. I figured the place might shutdown any day now and so it might be a good idea to document the place. It was pretty depressing. They currently have a court case with the new owner of the building and they aren’t doing well at all. According to the guy I spoke to they get very few customers and those who do come are old customers who used to be young 20 or 30 years ago and now come back with their grand kids to show them the place they used to get their books from. I walked around looking for an old copy of Hardy Boys or Dungeons & Dragons but didn’t find any not even a Peter and Jane book. On the other hand I did find some left over Jughead and Veronica comics in their old comics section. Below are some pictures I took of the place.

I still remember my dad and mom taking me there every weekend when I was 5.. Now I am a sad panda ๐Ÿ™

I love going there! too bad they dont supply A-levels books anymore! they used to have them back in 2009 but now they dont ๐Ÿ™ “no one buys them” i regret not buying them back then.

Hi Mark! You’ve mentioned about Dungeons and Dragons… Are there any bookstore selling those books here in Kuwait?

been there and asked them… unfortunately none. they said they can order it but it will take time.
thanks though.

Was wondering do they have the “Game of Thrones” series there? :s I miss that place hehehe stepping in that store must be like stepping into a Time Machine, time stood still it looks exactly the same as it did before except there aren’t that many books there :s

Did you guys check out the cover of that accounting book?
Computers don’t even look like that anymore…

Its sad the the state that this bookstore has reached! Its because they make it so difficult to bring books into Kuwait that months go by before they cleared from MoI, book stores don’t survive in Kuwait because of the hassles that they go through!

I don’t even know if anyone brings in comic books like Al Manara book shop did a long time ago!

More than a year ago, same guy told me that they will close soon and they were having a court case .
So,I sympathized with him ,and bought alot of books and magazines.thank yooooou.

This was where my friend Hamad Abdulrazak and I used to get all our books….we drove by a few days ago.. the building is gutted now, as well as old salmiya is being torn down….I wish they would retain the building and just do interior renovation, to keep the character of the area….Kuwait is like Las Vegas, tear it down every 20 years and rebuild….we have very few old buildings left…
