Follow-up review on the iPhone 4S

My iPhone 4S arrived from the UK yesterday and so I managed to spend more time with the device and now have a few things I want to highlight, mostly the negatives.

Reception
According to Apple they’ve improved the reception on the iPhone 4S. I never had any issues with the reception on the original iPhone 4 but I do have an issue with the new “improved” reception on the 4S. Although the phone signal now spends most of its time with full signal bars which is great for people who use the phone to call people, another problem has come up instead. The phone now spends a lot more time on Edge instead of 3G internet. I hadn’t seen the little “E” icon on my iPhone for ages but now it’s popping up all the time. I first noticed it in my underground parking, I used to get a weak phone signal before (say 2 bars) but would have 3G. Now I have full signal bars but Edge instead of 3G. I figured it’s not an issue since I don’t spend too much time in the basement checking email or tweets. Once I got out of the parking it swapped back to 3G, but then once I hit the traffic light near Corniche Club on the Gulf Road it was back on Edge. It swapped back to 3G again before going to Edge once I got near TGIF. I even got the Edge signal at the Kuwait Stock Market traffic light. And I’m not talking about Edge appearing briefly and disappearing again, I’m talking about Edge being there the whole time while I’m waiting at the traffic light.

Edge SUCKS. I might as well not have internet since Edge is that horribly slow. I don’t know what Apple did to the reception but I hope this is just a bug that will be fixed in the next software update because I would rather have 2 signal bars and 3G instead of full signal bars and Edge.

Siri
She’s great but I have an issue and it’s not that she doesn’t understand me sometimes (check above). In my previous post I mentioned how I wanted to use Siri to remind me of stuff when I get home or get to work. For example “Remind me to walk my dog when I get home”. Siri is supposed to know when I get home and remind me to walk my dog. Problem is because we are in Kuwait we can’t teach Siri where home or office is. Siri uses Google Maps address to learn our home and office locations and right now Google Maps addresses only work in the US. What I don’t understand is why Siri won’t learn the locations using GPS positioning. If you use the Reminder App without Siri you can teach it locations using your GPS position. I already has a saved location in the Reminder App called “Work” and I can tell the App to remind me to do something once I get to the location “work”. Why can’t Siri use the already saved location information or why it can’t learn locations using GPS instead of street addresses doesn’t make any sense.

Finally another issue with Siri and I don’t know if this problem is only happening with me or not but Siri refuses to make phone calls. If I tell her for example to call my wife or call my brother, she will start the calling process and show me she’s dialing the number but then she replies back apologizing that she can’t call them. I’ve tried it with a bunch of different people in my contact list, I’ve removed the +965 from numbers, I tried everything and Siri will keep telling me she can’t call them. Again a strange issue which hopefully will be fixed in the future.

Speed
The phone is fast, for day to day operations it’s not noticeably faster than the regular iPhone 4 but just run any game and you’ll instantly see a huge difference. Most games were loading and opening instantly and even games like Rage were loading in just a couple of seconds. If you’re a gamer you’re gonna love the 4S.

The only thing really left to test is the battery life and I can’t do that right now since I’m too busy playing with Siri and the new features. Maybe once my phone use goes back to normal in a weeks time I’ll be able to compare it to my previous iPhone.

If anyone has any questions or anything they want me to try just ask in the comments below.

Update: My guy at Alghanim just called to tell me they’re selling the iPhone 4S 16GB for KD289 and they already started delivering the phones to people from yesterday. I purchased the phone from the Apple Store in the UK and with shipping it ended up costing me around KD230. But I guess if you want the phone right now and don’t want to wait 2-3 weeks for it then this is probably your best option.

the original iPhone 4 used to get me through the whole day and since this one is supposed to have better battery life i’m expecting the same as well.

What carrier you use in your IPhone 4S? VIVA or ZAIN? and does the problem of the names not appearing still exist when you have the +965 added?

I’m using my Viva line and the names not appearing still exists if anything is actually work. When my Alghanim contact called me it wouldn’t show me his name even though I had his number saved with a +965 and without. I deleted the +965 and kept it without and still wouldn’t show. Then i turned on and off the phone and it worked.

I thought of asking you because i think this problem has something to do with how the phone is reading the sim card, till apple changes their system or we get a newer sim card the problem will remain. This is my opinion and this why no one else in the world have this problem but us.

I’m having the issue too .. I’m asking Siri to call a contact and it refuses .. and also I’m having trouble with the contacts showing .. did you remove the +965 or added it after switching your phone off then back on .. I’m Using a Viva line too and i got my iPhone 4s 64 Gb from Red Line for 350 KD with one year warranty

not all iphones come with one year warranty. A lot of shops in Kuwait provide software warranty, which means they will program your iphone for you, but if there is anything seriously wrong with your hardware, they will ask for money. These shops include Excite, iCity, both supposedly authorized Apple resellers and Geant.

Hey,

I am thinking of buying the iphone4s, can u please tell me where is “Red Line” located? and what is it exactly?
thnx

The names not showing for +965 numbers is a OS 5 issue we are all facing. I acant beleieve Apple would miss something they have already faced before and people complained and they fixed it yet managed to bring it back!!!

BTW I thought and heard that Google Maps are actually active in Kuwait now. You can get directions to places and i tried it!

Actually Google maps is working perfectly fine with me, I still didn’t get the iPhone 4S yet but i think the problem in Kuwait isn’t the Google Maps, our problem is the slow connection.

Using the reminder app is working with me. However it doesn’t remind me right after I leave work for example, it takes a few minutes to remind me due to weak internet connection in Kuwait.

Again, Google Maps with Siri does NOT work in Kuwait or anywhere else in the world other than the US of A. The problem isn’t the slow connection, our connection is fast, the problem is Siri is in Beta stage now and so Siri with Google Maps only works in the US.

Hey,
Does Siri have a language option where you can select a particular accent of english ?
e.g. US accent, British acccent, Indian accent etc etc.

Siri works exclusively on iPhone 4S. Siri understands and can speak the following languages:

English (United States, United Kingdom, Australia)
French (France)
German (Germany)

“The only thing really left to test is the battery life and I can’t do that right now since I’m too busy playing with Siri and the new features.” Will that not test the battery life?

no that will just drain the battery faster than usual. the only way i can test it is by normal use and then seeing how much battery life is left end of the day. it very rarely hits 20% for example, usually i have a third left by the end of the day so if with the 4S it hits 20% often it means the battery is worse, if the battery hits 50% often it means battery is better..

Hi. I’ve just purchased a white i4S and came across your site when google for reception problems.

Just like you, I have NEVER seen an Edge icon under normal use in the city. I’ve owned 3G, 3GS and 4. 4s was initially on 3G when it jumped to E for 10 or so minutes and then returned back to 3G. It has just happened again. Rebooting the phone brings back 3G.

Like I said, this is the first time I am seeing Edge in my location after 3 years of using iPhones on 3G. Carrier problem? NO. My i4, that I haven’t yet sold, has a solid lock on 3G.

Going back to the Apple store. Actually, the primary reason for returning the phone… is some weird crackling/hiss sound when making calls or just bringing it to my ear when engaging Siri. Seems like others are experiencing the same:

Wow!! KD 230!!, KD 289!! I’d rather wait till 5G arrives to grab a 4G cheap. In case, you plan to sell your old 4G at throw away price, please, consider me.

Hey Mark,

I was wondering how you’re doing with the battery. I’m struggling a lot with it so far…

Thing is the problem is two fold, I’m not sure whether its the phone or Etisalat here in the UAE with a weak network, but not only is my phone switching to Edge, its giving me the circle symbol!! which is GPRS! and it is constantly switching between 3G, Edge, o, and even wifi when its on…sometimes my signal drops all together for 15 mins at a time and i have to toggle airplane mode on and off to sort of reset…

this is PART of the reason its killing my battery I think, I’m currently performing a full cycle charge, switched off location services, disabled Push and opted for “Fetch every 30 mins”

Yesterday morning, my first day with the 4S i unplugged my phone off the charger at 7AM…granted I was messing with Siri, location services, etc… but my phone was at 10% (and dropping fast) by 2PM! had to go for a full charge again…

Sorry for the long rant, don’t expect you to have the answers either πŸ™‚ but if you get any feedback from other users lemme know!

Thanks

my issue isn’t that severe. Yesterday after regular use my phone was at 20% around 10PM at night. With my iPhone 4 with regular use it would still be up at around 30% by then. I might have played with Siri a bit too much yesterday which could be the reason for the extra drain. I paired my phone with my car and I was talking to Siri over the cars built in mic and speakers so I felt like Michael Knight talking to K.I.T.T. It was fun.

I have the same problem with Siri and phone calls. Alghanim Excite gives only software warranty, which is like no warranty at all. iPhone’s come with 1 year limited hardware warranty from Apple store. They are fooling consumers who don’t know any better.
I only asked about iPad but I expect their iPhone policy is the same. Ask your guy at Alghanim to explain. It is better to be honest and say we have no policy.

I bought my iPhone 4s from UK. My brother bought an iPhone 4, which malfunctioned while he was in London, he took it to the Apple Store. They gave him another one the same day. That’s customer service.
If Kuwaiti stores are unable to give proper warranty, they should say so. But, to deceive consumers by offering warranty while all they do is offer technical assistance with programming is shameful.
By the way Electrozan offers hardware warranty, although I haven’t tried them.

There is another comment I wish to add. I bought my old iPhone4 from Geant, who bought it from AIC. If you go to the list of authorized Apple resellers, you will find it listed there, as well as Excite and iCity, all of which only offer so called software warranty.
I think these stores are not authorized to sell iPhones. However, if they are authorized resellers shouldn’t they respect Apple’s policies. Why does Apple condone these practices.

Siri isn’t working for me too for calling .That was one of the few good features which differentiated iPhone 4 from 4s . I am disappointed πŸ™

Hi Mark,

did you manage to find a solution for the “calling via Siri” problem? Are you still not able to call ppl on your list?
The only way Siri will put through a call is if you are calling someone on Facetime.

I’d really appreciate it if you have a solution.

Thanks.
