Former British ambassador’s wife attacked with boiling water at Kuwait restaurant

The wife of a former British ambassador to Kuwait suffered third-degree burns after having boiling water thrown on her in a restaurant by a suspected Islamist activist, The (London) Times reported Wednesday.

Dianne Wilton, whose husband Christopher Wilton served as British ambassador in Kuwait between 2002 and 2005, was dining with a member of the Gulf state’s royal family and other friends when a woman entered the restaurant and grabbed a pot of scalding water.

The woman proceeded to hurl the pot at Wilton’s table.

The boiling water hit Wilton on the neck, shoulder and back — causing her to be hospitalized for treatment. She was released from a Kuwaiti hospital Tuesday night and will fly back to the UK for more treatment Thursday, the Times reported.

“She was extremely shaken up,” said her husband, the former ambassador.

“She’s all right but traumatized that this could happen at all. The assumption is [the attacker] singled out a table where Arab men were dining with obviously Western women.”

The attacker managed to run from the restaurant without being apprehended. [Source]

Haven’t read about this anywhere else yet so not sure how accurate the story is. But out of curiosity what kind of restaurant has “a pot of scalding water” lying around?

Thanks Najib

I dunno, the fact that the source has “fox” in the title makes me want to wait to see what the actual story is.

How would they know the person is an Islamist if they ran away without being apprehended? Did he shout out “BTW I’M AN ISLAMIST” while he ran away?

so the lady comes in with no prior intention but all of a sudden sees a hot pot of boiling water, scans the place like its her business, spots a westerner and attacks? Yoo! Entertaining

Check today’s (May 2nd, 2012) Arab Times, Page 6, next to the “xcite” Ad, column title “Hunt for woman” and you can find the news about some woman pouring boiling water……….

Crazy lady obviously knew someone at the table – and very doubtful that it was the former ambassador or his wife.

Guys I know Mr. Christopher Wilton personally and I know the family well, from all Brits I got to know they are the most pro gulf/Arab that there is, It is a shame that something like this happen, There is no reason for that, nothing justifies it, as an Ex-Pat I find the Kuwaitis to be the most friendly of all the region and if not the civilized world and this is not a Kuwaiti act for sure.

I wouldn’t be so quick to defend the friendliness of the Kuwaitis, because this wasn’t very friendly at all. Kuwait has become an unstable place to live – my flights to Dubai on Jazeera are like psych wards sometimes. Thank God I refuse to eat in a restaurant in Kuwait, the ambience sucks.

You haven’t been to OFK have you? Or any other restaurant that’s similar to it? You’re missing out.

Unstable place to live and don’t go to restaurants and yet you insist on living here? Are you unstable?

Depends on the situation and the generalization. For example principally people are very traditional and that tradition makes then very polite. However as any city modernizes and laws protects individuals the sense of tradition loses it presence and it becomes thR same right of individuals to express themselves. It is essentially a culture clash of tradition and freedoms, and because of that you will get a mixed reaction.

The only ones who benefit from individual rights are educated smart people, and without any or little family ties who like to use their mind to harass people. This is normal in a ‘free’ society but when you have people who traditions that don’t practice being rude, or simply are not as intelligent for many unknown reasons then they are at a disadvantage of this system of individual rights abusing others using their power in a negative way.

If the rude and expressive person respected the traditions then there would be less tension. Generally speaking insulting someones teachings results in a fight.

I am not saying anything specific, but assuming from a general point of view how you can have a different opinion and experience based on others provoking traditional people and you mostly seeing the reaction.

Also the sense of community is ruined when people a use their individual rights to expressly harass someone. Also it can stress someone to the point it causes real and permanent damage. The trade off of removing traditions is to have individual rights rewarding people who like to abuse others with their mind in a different kind of fight but sanctioned by laws.

Civilized world? In this context and the ‘funny’ comments above? It’s obvious that this lady isn’t a relative of one of these guys.

Is this the lets bitch about Kuwait Blog . All countries have their problems , and Kuwait is not oblivious to many such problems . We have always had these problems , they were just better hidden . Blame the internet and satellite TV for exposing you to more and more of the worlds ill’s. Bad things will happen , and no matter how much you talk about them , nothing will change . So lets focus on the positive .

So start your own blog if this one bugs you so much. “Change your blog to suit me!” isn’t a very good reason.

Is this the wife of the former British ambassador that had to resign because of an affair with his secretary?

“Bad things will happen , and no matter how much you talk about them , nothing will change”

Wow. That kind of attitude explains a lot about this place…

Its a real story, and was recorded in the local press. As for “what kind of restaurant has “a pot of scalding water” lying around?”, the answer is EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE. I can’t think of any restaurant which doesn’t have tea pots.

LOL. That’s a cauldron. A pot in British English usually refers to a tea pot. A tea pot in American English is usually called a kettle.

LOL this is def one of the funniest posts ive read on here. hard to beleive its real something about the incident doesnt add up.

So it’s real? The strange part how she was not caught. This sounds very suspicious.

This very well could be an Iranian plot to destabilize kuwaitis relations with the west. I can tell you personally Iran does not want Kuwait to have it’s balance of power by having strong ties with the west.

The fact that she was not caught sounds very suspicious. I personally believe she was caught and is being interrogated in the worst way possible.

LOLOL – can just imagine abaya, veil – whizzing through grabbing a pot of hot tea/water and waltzing out again……….oh there are many of us that would love to do it for many reasons.
Sounds like ms former abassadors wife was being ‘naughty’ with someone else’s hubby..
Damn sure if I found my hubby out with another woman – she and he would be more than scalded…………………… LOLOL

The story doesn’t add up, as details are missing. Still, nothing justifies this barbaric assault & I hope they catch her.

Exactly othman how did they know she was islamist, always the media trys to give a bad image about islam. Throughout the years i have read many articles in various american papers almost anything to do with middleeast they will throw a muslim terriost word. I guess this is a weapon i their hands and yet people agree…sad
