More expired food at Sultan Center

Expired Salmon Eggs

A friend of mine called me up yesterday, he purchased Salmon eggs from Sultan Center and while eating them he noticed they tasted strange. He took a look at the expiry date and it turned out the eggs had expired over a month ago on August 18th! Sultan Center is the only supermarket I shop at so its really frustrating that something like this keeps happening over and over. From now on I am literally going to be checking the expiry date on every product I purchase.

My friend has now started a Facebook group so people can voice their concerns on this issue and he is also planning on releasing it in the papers this week specially after the fact that when he went to Sultan to complain they took the matter very lightly and told him to come back next week. Hopefully by shinning the spotlight on this issue Sultan Center will be forced to take action in stopping this from happening again. [Facebook Group]

well sultan center is close to my home and i’ve been going there ever since they first opened in the 80’s so i am not really planning on changing that. what i am hoping is that they shape up and start fixing their shit up. This isn’t the 80’s anymore, Safe Way and the Coops aren’t the only competition they have anymore.

Thats why I always prefer City Centre. They don’t have as much variety as Sultan Centre but they have so many shoppers that they have to re-stock shelves several times a day. Its hard to end up with expired products there.

dont you guys have a baladiya there that handle these things?? cos weve had a few incidents here in oman that were reported and placed were shut down

same thing happened in DQ about 15 years ago and they were shut down and banned from Oman for the longest time. they only just reopened less than a year ago

Did any of you see the Philedelphia cream cheese display? It was a neat looking pyramid, but it was no where near a fridge. I was pissed off enough to call the manager over and show him the “refridgerate” label on the product.

You are correct, till when are they gonna get away with selling us expired food. For crying out loud it is Baladiya Guidelines 101.

This really sucks, you have to mentally and explicitly remember to spend extra time reading the expiry date on every product you put in your basket just in case it might be expired whilst shopping in the most expensive grocery store in Q8! LoL High Prices – High Standards?

I can expect dodgy stuff at a bakala but Sultan is really taking us all for a ride!

The local government does not work here, if you want to take action stop shopping there! Think about it….. by going back then you are just another chump allowing them to continue trading in the bad way that they are – by getting your custom.

Companies only take action when it looks like their profits might get hurt!

I go back for the chocolate lucky charms!

But seriously, I go back because I am a loyal customer. I am trying my best as a loyal customer to improve Sultan instead of bailing out. Now if this keeps happening and they don’t show any sign that they are trying to improve or fix things then I would leave.

like mark said..this isn’t the first time…before your friend does anything let me know coz we already have claims and are ready to hit the media with this!..however we are still working on a settlement…they where going to give us 300kd worth of chocolates…however not from sultan center but from the sweets companies! we refused and are currently working on another solution…

like i said before sultan center is in trouble, this is not the only issue they have as i will explain letter in the blog!

I always find expired stuff when I shop there. I always bring it to the attention of the staff there too. Last time, I went to get hot dogs for my son and all of the brand that we buy was expired, about 15 packages. They said, "Sorry , Madame, it is Ramadan and there is a lot of stuff now"??? What the heck does that mean?
Anyway, I shop there because they have stuff that I like, and it is close by, although their prices are exorbitant! Seems like we are always lining someone’s pocket here.

If you can convince the local trading standards to impose a fine of 10,000KD everytime they find a product in violation of expiry date or storage conditions that would make the store think twice.

Salmon Eggs and fish products that give you food poisoning can really damage you – believe me I have been there, I was out of action for 3 days – not just bowl control but my whole body seized up. 300KD for any food poisoning is a joke!

I am not sure that putting it in the media has that much effect in Kuwait, as the competition against Sultan center is non-existent. I am happy that people do point it out, but it seems to just blow over with nothing being done about it. And we will just continue to shop there!

If this was a bakala, they would penalise them and possibly shut them down! So whats the difference? Food poisoning from the bakala or Sultan – the effect is the same.

I would not be surprised to find melanine contaminated milk from China on their shelves next week! I suppose someone is going to have to die first before the local government/trading standards wake up?

this maybe a little trivial compared to the above worrying comments but something also has to be done about the bunches of little, filthy, foul mouthed brats ( i am actually being polite here) that hang around in the salwa branch. I have been insulted, heard other women heckled and witnessed stones thrown at cars, avoided thrown shoes and catapults……………when i complain to the mangement, they just say they cannot do anything. Has anyone else found this to be extremely annoying, insulting and frightening or am i just a grumpy old woman with little tolerance?

the people that look at everything on sale inspire me … i simply dont have the time to .. however,, give them a break .. they have to sift through soo much .. honestly SALMON EGGS ???? not the place to buy it !! 😀 just my view offcourse !

iam working there 🙂 sorry i wont tell you in wich department. I don’t know from where to start but really i know everything what happen inside the stores all of them the same every single day iam catching expired food rotten etc.. here is the Tip all those ppl whos working there have low salary 18 years in service and hes/shes getting only 180 KD !! ( after increasing ) i saw a chocking list salary. Guys for sure they will not care about the products ( `7aleeh ywali mali sho`3ol ) a lot of them they are telling that coz they want to make problem fo the store manager they are not getting a decent life there i feel pity on them. It a big story enough for u to know that

That really sucks. I hate the fact that the guys who fill up groceries in the bags aren’t allowed to receive tips. I have to like sneak them money and some don’t accept in case they get caught by management.

hilaliya is right there is Consumer protection (7mayat il mostahlak) and there becoming more and more strict in Q8. Someone call 135 and tell them about this problem and see what happens. There becoming strict about the service charge in resturants too, it turns out that in Q8 theres no such thing if they add a service charge in Q8 tell them to take it off the bill if they dont just call 135 and they will deal with the problem…as ive been told 😛

Sultan center deserve this, it is about time, it has been going on for years. And believe me, I personally know people very very close to the owners who have delivered my messages and complaints (listed below) and the owners dont seem to care. For shame. I am about to leave a harsh comment and I hope they read this – as I know they read your blog Mark and Nat.

1. I bought a box of raisins that were one week away from expiry and they were COVERED IN MOLD still in their package

2. I bought expensive Italian Buffala mozzerella cheese THAT HAD BEEN EXPIRED FOR TWO WEEKS. This has happened to me 3 TIMES.

3. I bought a can of refried beans a few years ago, only to find that they had lard (pork fat) in them. I quietly went up and told the management what was in the cans and since this was an Islamic country it could be a big problem if someone else jumped on it and exposed them, especially as there are members of the Sultan family who are publicly and politically SALAFI MUSLIMS AND EXTREMELY RELIGIOUS. They took the cans off the shelves only to put them back on 3 days later when I returned. I went up again and said what the hell is wrong with people to the manager. The cans of refried beans were taken off and apparently the word got around among employees that some mad anti- lard in beans lady was on the rampage ( believe me, i am no Islamic saint here, ok?).

4. I found frozen meals in the fridge section, already well and long defrosted and that were apparently out for days when they were supposed to be frozen. I told one of the section managers.. He told me they were supposed to be refrigerated. I flipped the Healthy Choice box over and showed him where it clearly said: KEEP FROZEN. He proceeded to tell off and berate the poor indian gentlemen stocking the shelves, and had him PUT THEM BACK IN THE FREEZER – meals already very very likely spoiled and full of harmful bacteria. I was disgusted. Sultan is unacceptable dirty and shameless.

5. THE ICE CREAM HAS ALWAYS BEEN MELTED AND REFROZEN!! ALWAYS

6. They are known among Baladeya insiders to be the WORST OFFENDERS of food health safety and MOST CORRUPT in terms of wasta and bribes.

Shame on you TSC. I stopped shopping at your store long ago. If it means not buying my usual US snacks and stuff from you – well, I just love Amazon grocery and am lucky enough to have people in the states who send me what I want, and go enough times throughout the year to bring back what I want.

Shame on you TSC.

ilsul6ana:
as the article explains, the service charge should go between %10 to %20 of the total food charge which doesn’t totally mean its illegal… it just means that they should scratch the fixed service charge they tell you about at the beginning and set it up when you finish your food so they’d actually be able to decide your service charge…

there IS service charge… but its only used in a wrong way…

I’ve never had a problem with Sultan Center food. I think most supermarkets have expired food and we don’t even realise. My lcal jamiya does it all the time. I think some people seem to be on a cruade against the outlet. As someone points out, why not go to the consumerr standards board first?

Mark, you are outdated, you seemed to visit a number of Burger Joints searching for the best, but when it comes to the supermarket you stick to something out of some old notion of nostalgia, well check out some other supermarket like lulu, city, coop some people mentioned here too.

TheDude I go to Sultan not out of nostalgia but because they are the only supermarket in Kuwait that carries some great US products. Show me another supermarket that has A&W Root Beer. Also why the hell would I drive out to Shuwaikh to buy shampoo when I can just drive down the street to Sultan?

Considering how many items are stocked, its gonna happen.
I see it all the time in the USA. Check first, then buy. And if it still isnt right, take it back!

Agreed, well talking generally not just about specific product i.e.I had in mind food with less shelf life.Thing is that they may import stuff from U.S but sometimes they don’t find much takers so it rots on the shelf, yea like I was gonna buy that salmon stuff for that price when I got a local market for things too.Guess it all boils down to bad management and they resorting to cheating people into buying expired stuff to make a profit.

Ms Baker – Well done for being strong and blowing out TSC! I am weak like the others as I enjoy the convenience and put up with the crap because you can’t buy some things anywhere else.

Giggles – The cause is down to the number of items stocked? You must be joking? I’ve worked in a large supermarket with a stock list that makes TSC look like a small bakala and the local trading standards come down hard on the store if they find anything like whats going on at TSC!

When you go to any store in the world you are also paying for a service which is marked up into the price of the goods, which includes the service that they do not leave expired items on the shelf!

Haven’t they heard of inventory management systems? This thing is impossible unless a) they don’t own one and b) they don’t even use it ! Let’s be more critical here, you have a supermarket chain that imports great porducts, most of which probably ends up exired before it gets purchased and has an annual operating profit of that of a restaurant. Apparently they have the urge to import way too many products than that is accepted in the market. Beleive me they are more like a speicialty store rather than a supermarket. The only way they can import such a huge variety of specialty items is that they keep it on the shelf for much longer than specified. Their minced meats are steaks that werent sold in due time and you can check with the butchers. On the other hand the governement is also partially responsible. It is very difficult to import food products in Kuwait and usually the clearance takes a month. the expiry dates of the baladiya are much lesser than the product expiry, you can check that too.
Apparently there is a major in upper management because the owners have a conflict amongst each other and there is no clear head.

Rain, I couldnt agree with you more. I am not making any excuses for them by any means. But think about it… you see alot of stocking, but when do you see anyone looking at dates before they start filling up the shelves? How often do you see a cart of “removed” items?
I think that its too much effort to actually check and remove and then discard for one that makes such a nominal salary. So much work to do, and so little time. Get it done and dont make any additional work for yourself or anyone else. I think its a sad reality. Should something be done? Absolutely. But there comes a time when consumers should be looking and accept some responsibility. Even in the best of places, things get missed. An entire row of whatever may have been replaced and one overlooked… How many times in your personal pantry(for those that cook) have you found something you may have thought non perishable to be expired? I know I am guilty…I have thrown out loads of food. As a matter of fact, I am inspired to go check now.

Giggles, the rule of filling shelves is not just about looking at the dates. You always pull out all the old stuff to the front and stock from the back, its taught at training. It helps avoid having expired items on the shelf! So what you are saying is that its okay for the staff and management to not bother, and when your child eats something and goes to hospital and has a digestive problem for the rest of their life its all okay cos they have low salaries?

– 15 packs of expired food, putting stock back 3 days later, repeatedly finding perished items? Sorry but I don’t think its just the one item being over looked somehow!

– Pantry – Its common sense to look at an item in your own house and expect to find that it may have expired but not at a supermarket!

Sorry but if I shop in a place that prices their goods at premium prices, then I expect a premium product and service and nothing less!

How can we believe this story about expired itms, there’s nothing to prove this items from where or when you buy it ? we need prove to stop shopping there ?

I think the best place to go is ministry of trade, but i think there”s a personal issue in this case otherwise it would not be here.

THERE IS NO GREATER ACTION THAN…COMMUNITY ACTION. PERIOD

On a lighter note; would Markaz Sultan accept ‘expiring currency’ like, er…Zimbabwean Dollars ZWD for our purchases.

Damn! Where are those Iraqi dinars I had been saving?

I would like to say that we should all make something to prevent wataniya & zain from stealing our money more.

In U.A.E, etisalat company has very low rates on week ends, & almost free international calls on holidays. Here, our mobile bills are coming very high, & when we encounter a problem & report it to them, they sell us nice words through the call center, & no follow up from their side on the problem itself.

we are full of hope that VIVA will beat them

Maybe I’m a little late but there are a few a problems with the label on
what we are told are salmon eggs. Are you sure they were salmon eggs??
1. The date of manufacture and the date of expiration are six (6) days
apart. Hardly enough time for a grocery distributor system in the USA or the time to transport from the gathering source (salmon fishing grounds at sea).
2. The recommended printed control temperature is also suspect -2C to +2C?? Four (4) degrees is usually a tolerance of the refrigerator not the controlling temperature.
3. The real suspect of this label is that the label is in two languages. Impossible to have originated in the USA (?).
4. The government needs to be alerted for the human suffering from these fake products . . . there was no manufacturer’s name listed and that is usually against all import customs regulations around the world. My guess is that the product was gathered and packed right there in the Middle East from a country a little North and East of Kuwait and someone allowed the custom clearance without the proper care.
5. Yes it is proper to hold the store liable for selling this product.

SORRY, I did not pay attention to the date correctly. The date period
is 14-02-2008 extended to 14-08-2008. That is six (6) months and not my error of six days. Please disregard that mistake in my first item.

I am very bothered by the label in two languages and no responsible manufacturer listed. Maybe someone brought the salmon eggs in with a submarine to your shores to avoid the strict food customs inspectors.

Register complaint only give an action on salary deduct on staff who monthly salary 100.
Its no wrong in checking the expiry before you buy or at least before u consume. Not only expiry but also the label on the products. If you die after consumption, how much money may replace your life.
You are responsible for every actions in your life. Blaming others or crying or complaining on others may result in further complications.
Thanks dudes
