New Magazine: The City

I was having breakfast at The Early Bird when I spotted a new magazine called The City in their magazine stand. I brought the magazine home with me and have been flipping through it and there are things I like and things I don’t like about it.

One of the things I like is their writers. I recognized a few of the contributes including Dana Madouh who I got to meet the first time I visited Hamra Tower, and Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi and John Peaveler both of which are behind the Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals and their Habitat (K’SPATH). There were also a few other familiar names as well.

Now what I didn’t like about the magazine is the layout and design. The choice of typefaces, the full forced justification and the very boring grid makes it look too much like a B-rated high school magazine. But, it’s their first issue and maybe the design will improve with the next issues.

One thing I thought was strange is that according to the Chief Editor in his intro column they’re “the fastest growing magazine available across the globe”.

If you’re interested in picking up the magazine I’m guessing it’s available at various coffee shops and restaurants around Kuwait but not sure since they don’t say where you can find it in the magazine. I got mine from The Early Bird.

I wish more magazines in Kuwait would actually STAY in publication instead of just disapparing.

My compliments to Ahmed El-Adly for keeping Bazaar on the shelves for as long as he has. It is a real balancing act.

Magazines are like mushrooms popping up and disappearing. I could only go for the ones that lasts.. Bazaar and Student Talk rules!

The content in most of the English magazines here are like 80% advertisements and boring writing.

They are just a waste of glossy paper and colored ink.

For instance, no one reads Student Talk for their poorly edited articles. It’s just a photo album of university students and serves no purpose other than for a group of bored guys at a Starbucks to rate pictures of hot girls.

Dear Mark,

have a GREAT day,

Isn’t it the first issue?
How on earth is it the fastest growing when it hasn’t been tested out in the market?

I flipped through it and decided not to read it.
BORING. Old news and interviews with people we have already seen in interviews. Food and fashion are way over-covered and saturated that they are no longer interesting.

By the time a publication comes out I would have read what they would publish in a blog.

To the commenter saying that we need magazines to stay and not disappear… i agree. BUT, when a magazine is pretty much blog content and there are hundreds on them covering the same topic, its pretty hard to stay around. The content requires almost daily (atleast weekly) updates that is not magazine publishing sustaible. We need more soul feeding content rather than eye-candy

Its not a new magazine. Its a redesigned City Pages. I liked it when I first picked it up and saw the names of some of the contributors too. But once I started reading it….UGH. The English is horrendous, and the grammar is worse. Im sorry but if youre going to invest the time and money in creating an English magazine, the least you can do is hire a good editor…

If you want a nicely designed blog I find Khaleejesque to be very pretty. They’re on their second issue and it’s focused on arab design and culture around the middle east. I learned about it because two of the people who started it used to be AUK students and they came into one of my classes and gave a presentation about it.

Check it yo.

How embarrassing is it that they weren’t creative enough to come up with their own logo?! The City logo they are using is the one from MTV’s The City with Whitney Port. Just goes to show how much creativity and individuality this magazine lacks!

The City of MTV is a show we still call an apple in the grocery apple ! Steve Jobs didn’t mind !

Cheers

Many harsh comments.Seems unfortunate that the Kuwaiti public is very keen on pointing out mistakes and problems in certain products and hardly having the ability to present constructive criticisms which inevitably offer feedback that might help improve instead of putdown. Very hard public to please.
I wish theCity magazine all the luck in their future issues and “don’t let them bring you down!”

Hi Mark,
We confirmed with CityPages magazine and it is not their revamped version. Its very bad to copy someone so close and selecting the similar name. But I am sure, original idea always lasts.

Hi what is the magazine’s office address/contact number? &
What is the Citymagazine official website?

I want to know more about the magazine.

Best regards,
Yousef Alawadhi
