The Drobo in Kuwait

Before I purchased my Drobo backup system I passed by the local dealer 3gghead and checked out their price. They were selling the Drobo for KD165 while on Amazon it was being sold for KD100. So I ended up ordering mine from Amazon figuring I would be saving a good chunk of money.

When my Drobo finally arrived to Kuwait I ended up paying KD39 for shipping and customs which brought my total to KD139. Not much of a saving compared to the local dealer but still a saving.

Then a couple of days back I get an email from the local dealer saying they wanted to give my readers a discount on the Drobo to help bring down the price difference between ordering online and buying locally. So, if anyone is interested in the Drobo you can now have it for KD150. That means for just KD11 more than it would cost you to order it from Amazon, you can get the Drobo locally with a 2 year warranty. So you guys are lucky since I got mine without warranty and had to wait a week to get it.

3gghead is located in the basement of Baitak Tower in Kuwait City. If you haven’t been to Baitak Tower before it’s an interesting small place, there is an X-Cite Electronics store on the ground floor along with Quiznos, Salad Creations and The Nut Tree.

Update: Here is a picture they sent me of the store

where is the location , is it the ITS building opposite textile market .
I wish they put more info on the products they sell , instead of a list of brand names .

been curios about drobo for a while. the swapable thing is great. never had the chance to find out if it is easy to set up on a wifi network?

Not bad. Not bad at all.

@hmikail – It’s not really designed for wi-fi network. It sort of works if you buy a separate accessory called droboshare, but if you want something on the network, you should look at home servers such as the Acer Home Server or HP media vaults. These devices also have itunes and media servers built in so great for streaming.

drobo is great for very safe backups over USB or Firewire. That’s about it.

there is an option but if you want something that works easily over your network get a NAS based backup system. the drobo is great if connected via FW800 and directly to your computer or server.

Mark,

What do you mean you bought yours with no warrenty? The vast majority of items sold on Amazon come with a returns policy and a warrenty.

Mark,

As you’ve got a US mailing address with DHL, there should be nothing stopping you sending your Drobo back if it breaks down.

When I was living in Bahrain, I bought a NAS drive from Synology (via Shop&Ship) and it broke. I was covered under warrenty (US only) so they repaired it and sent it back to my US Aramex address and it was sorted.

why are they still more expensive than individually ordering from amazon? I know its only 11kd difference. It should be closer to the Amazon price. besides how often do these break anyways?

I would still order it and get it personally instead of benifiting a greedy merchant who only decided to bring the prices down because a competing offer was listed on a blog!

There is a huge difference in volume between a local merchant and amazon so the price has to be a little higher. Plus you are not getting it with a warranty, so if the 11 KD is bothering you go ahead and order it from amazon. You not supporting local merchants is doing nothing to bring prices down and bring good products to our market.

I bought my Drobo 4 months ago at $280.00 , was it available back then and what price . I don’t know the location of that place , while online you can fine many vendors that sells it . Biatk sounds like KFH own ( Kuwait House of Hypocrites )
