The same friend who shot the picture of the “Desert Dance Floor” also shot the video above he took at one of the campsites. That’s a lot of crap all over the place and surprisingly it’s not an isolated incident. It’s like not one single camper cleaned up after themselves. [Link]

Its easy to take a person out of the ghetto, but its impossible to take the ghetto out of a person.
Sad but true.

Careless.
khala9, camping should be banned. 9ij moo kafo hal haylag!
Many places in the US require permits for camping – especially where there are long-term camps. If Kuwait did it, at list they could log L&L and fine for these types of crimes against nature. When you attach a monetary value to polluting, then people are less likely to do it.
I don’t think pollution is by any means limited to camps in Kuwait. Grab a sandwich on Restaurants Street and see how many people toss entire bags out their car windows because “somebody else will clean it up.” It’s an attitude that needs to be adjusted.
Point 😉
+1. It really is about an attitude. You have to care about keeping your place clean – nor matter if you’re from that country or an expat. Kuwait isn’t even a large country – there isn’t a reason it shouldn’t be as clean as somewhere like Singapore (for example).
That would just create another form of wasta.
3rab..
The problems facing the desert as an ecosystem are even more serious than just unsightly garbage left by campers. Prolific waste combined with unrestricted driving and over-grazing has already caused the extirpation of plant and animal species. This trend will continue and the result will be an absolute wasteland. I’m fortunate to be working in many of the protected areas in Kuwait, so I can tell you from experience that Kuwait is beautiful if it is taken care of.
Studies have shown that the difference in plant life between a fenced area in Kuwait and an area open to the public is 90%. This in turn is actually causing desertification which is something we all suffer from. Science has proven that we, humans, are wholly responsible for desertification. I don’t place blame on any one person or group of people but anyone and everyone who cares needs to act together quickly to stop these changes before they are permanent.
@John – Maybe if the government opened up the wildlife sanctuary to the public this would teach them about the beauty of the desert and how we should protect the desert hapitat, but currently it is closed to the public. In this type of societies, it is expected that the government play a social role in a society and desert protecting the desert is the government’s responsibility. I blame the government! They are to blame for not encouraging educational awareness which is providing the people the green light for this lack of concern for Kuwait’s environment.
Why are you Making it a Big Happening thing, Man??? It’s Off Road,Cut it, As if mark you go & live there usually. Nobody would Really Care Whats Happening Around the Desert Area.
Common Now, Waiting for some New Post’s!
Are you always this retarded or are you just trolling? Because I can’t seem to distinguish between them.
i think just retarded…
no respect for land and the facilities that people get here.. sad
So if someone has a different opinion than your’s he is trolling and retarded? While he shouldnt be so apathetic, there are so many filthy places in Kuwait within Kuwait which no one posts about but everyone is oh so concerned about the desert being dirty. Maybe you should be a little more tolerant of another opinion.
Abdou, My Bro 🙂
Like it or not the desert is a big part of Kuwait, there shouldn’t be a priority on what place in Kuwait should be the cleanest, it just needs to be taken care of. Nuno Gomez’s apathy towards this situation is very worrisome because it just shows the attitude people have towards keeping their environment clean. Even though the replies to him were insulting, it’s slightly understandable.
If you follow this blog you should know that Mark points out the state of Kuwait’s areas as well, he’s posted more than once about how dirty Salmiya is getting and how no one is doing anything about it.
With all due respect to Mark, he is usually campaigning for areas in Salmiya close to malls and commercial areas. The residential areas in Salmiya close to the marine are upscale and we know that not everyone in Kuwait lives in upscale apartments which are minutes away from the sea. Let me take you guys on a trip down the more ghetto areas in Salmiya and show me one post from any major blogger in Kuwait who has asked for its cleanup or raised attention to it. Of course, attention shouldn’t drift from cleaning up the desert, but it sounds a little odd that people raise hell when the desert is dirty but in the “hardcore” residential areas like Farwaniya, Jleeb, Abbasiya, Khaitan etc, no one sets foot in it. Some places in Kuwait will never be very photogenic, even if clean, but it doesn’t mean that it should be ignored, just like the desert.
Dude I LIVE in the ghetto and all I’ve been doing is campaigning over and over for the area to be cleaned up! My area upscale? I wish…
Happy Easter 🙂

Olleyyy
You must have missed the few posts about the thugs that live near Marks area, including the police showing up to break up a 30 man fight.
we are talking about the entire kuwait’s Residential areas And not Addressing Mark’s Area! 🙂
desert no doubt is part of kuwait environment, but as mentioned by abdou, areas like jleeb, hasavi, salmiya, farwaniya, khaitan, there are some parts in these areas which are so dirty drainage water on the roads, no cleaning by municipality,
most of the blogs are about lifestyles which 80% people dont live in kuwait.
due respect mark , but your blog is much about for the high society or kuwait lifestyle, nothing much about expats or asians or other nationalities living in kuwait.
You Said It, Perfect Reply :))
In all fairness it is his blog and he can post about whatever he wants. But collectively most bloggers, and not going on a witch hunt, …most blogs are about a living a lavish and luxurious lifestyle, eating in posh restaurants, driving expensive cars and spending a lot of time in malls eating frozen yoghurts. Seems like the family friendly, affordable lifestyle in Kuwait that so many people benefit from is rarely addressed. So it is kind of funny that noise is being made for the desert being dirty…lol.
Hahaha.. You people Do a Lot of usual Crazy Shit Stuff On the Roads & Malls! Why Going off road??? and besides in the Scorching Heat of kuwait, you guys won’t even Peak out the Conditions of these beautiful Desert of Kuwait in the Summers. haha.. Why? First Change Yourself And then See the Change Come In ;)) yes.

It’s Easy & Fun with Blogging, Writing Down Articles, Post pictures, Write down our Reviews, Commenting & making Fun. Yeah…Thats All On the Internet 🙂
We All know People Love to hangout with their Iphones & Cameras, Every Other Individual Loves Doing That! Now thats Called a Hobby & NOT raising Concerns :))
@Nuno – I have an idea why don’t you people living in jleeb, hasavi, salmiya, farwaniya, khaitan, do a clean-up in your areas? Get involved, improve your areas yourself, regardless of the incompetent municipality who doesn’t care about your areas because they are racist against you.
@Sarah, Not a Baad Idea! Well i need you to be my lead volunteer in this Campaign!
Would you Help or you Just excercising your Fingers over the keyboards :))
@sarah – I’m sure when your fancy overpriced malls are dirty you also go and clean up? Or do you catch the cleaner? You never complain to people who are responsible for the clean up? I guess we should all be carrying a broom, mop and dettol with us? lol…amazing solution!
Abdouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! my brooo!!!!!!!!!
loooooolxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 😀 😀 ;P 😛
Abdou it seems your more spoilt than most people in this blog… As all you seem to do is complain and tell other people how to behave. Just because people have money it does not mean they dont know how to clean up after themselves. What this post is trying to say be it desert or anywhere els in Kuwait, is that if we all have to stop thinking that people will clean up after us, only then we will see a big change. Stop being spoilt and do something. Mark thank you for showing what the people here are possible of doing as it seems we all think that what we do is insignificant and don’t realize that every little bit counts. Keep Kuwait Clean.
Abdou with all due respect why don’t you try to clean up your street and see what a difference it would make.
It’s so easy for you to ask people to clean up the roads, but when it comes to you cleaning up, you wouldn’t be able to tell which side of the broom to use.
Hahaha Abdu stop complaining I’m not saying I wake up everyday and go out and clean up, but I make sure not to litter and when i see things littered on the road or next to my house and there is a trash bin near by I clean it up. I’m not saying that I can’t do more I’m saying that every little bit helps and you should make sure ur not part of the problem but part of the solution.
Sometimes , i wish i can see more greenscapes in kuwait. But we don’t even deserve the desert to begin with. Sad indeed
walla sha3b mo kafoo shay..
remember someone mentioning in one of the earlier posts asking which locals are you talking about or can you be specific? (new beach side fine laws and people not cleaning up)
I guess this explain about the locals now (whether the beach or the desert)
Mark thank you for showing what the people here are possible of doing as it seems we all think that what we do is insignificant and don’t realize that every little bit counts.
Keep Kuwait Clean
Did anyone else think of the movie District 9 when they say this video?
Anyway, I don’t know what’s worse: The fact that people left trash behind or people living in these conditions.
