Where in Kuwait can I find Matabbag (مطبق)?

A reader posted in the forum asking here he could find Matabbag in Kuwait. I hadn’t heard of it before but it looks and sounds pretty good so now I’m curious to try it. Where can I find Matabbag in Kuwait?

Note: According to the reader, Matabbag is very popular in Saudi Arabia, it’s made using thin bread dough and contains a mix of minced meat, egg and spices inside.

“can’t wait for my next visit to The Kingdom”… surely the first time those words have ever been uttered!

If this is what I think this is…. then try the Bakery behind Burger King next to Salmiya co-op….. they make something like this there….. in front of you and they have other stuffings too like cheese, cream, honey, etc etc….

I haven’t seen it here, but a close equivalent would be kheema parathas at an Indian or Pakistani restaurant.

after reading the post on the blog….i guess this could be simillar to the “فطير مشلتت” same idea although the latter is round most of the time. You can get whatever you want inside those…eating them fresh out of the oven is the best; a great place i order from is Katkot (25651080)

Yes, that is correct. It is a thin flat piece of dough. They then put a mixture of spices, vegetables, minced meat and chilly (some even ask for banana or honey 😐 ) and then the dough is folded inwards.

Its like a piece of paper, with something in the center, then fold it inwards.

The result is the square that you see in my pictures in the post. That is then cooked for 2 mins and he then puts it in a plate, makes about 6-8 pieces of it and you eat.

Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyy!

I’m surprised NO ONE in Kuwait knows about this!

And it only costs 3 riyals (~200 fils).

This sounds like the indian Nan bread, which can be plain or backed with a variety of other fillings. Though I’ve never seen other than plain nan in Kuwait. Or it could be something else.. I should try it first and then judge :p

seems like a “feteer” for me there’s lots of kinds like sausge (sogo2) , cheese , sugar and nuts i think i saw someone near rest, street doing it.

Yes we know muttabaq is fish and rice, the discussion is about the muttabbag shown in the pic, it’s something else I think. 🙂 looks like fe6eer, what’s the country of origin? Is it Saudi like mentioned above ?

You could find them at al Mirrah [الميرة] at shwaikh .. There is bakery inside the supermareket .. Make these bread stuffed with meat , veggie, chesse …etc

Looks like the Arab version of “Paratha” (Indian) or “Bolani” (Persian)..

I love stuffed food stuff’s.. be it Samosa’s or Matabbag 🙂

We make this dish at home. According to my dad it’s called “Murtaba” (Mur6aba) (مرطبه) and the description in the post fits perfectly with the way we make it!

There’s a bakery in jabriya next to makhbaz al irani that’s called ameer al omara2 or something close to it .. I believe they do have that and I know they deliver too .. Not sure about the possible fillings though as I have personally seen them do it with cream and honey only.. Looked amazing! I can tell u that

In india thats known as Baida Roti Mutton or Chicken (Baida means Egg, roti the thin bread, and they use minced meat or chicken or veggies)
though size varies in each restaurant (popular road side snack)

and yes something similar is available at the salmiya coop bakery behind burgerking

for those that said there is a place behind BK and Zain that does this “motabaq” dish, I would like to point out that the only place that may sell something that may remotely look like the pic above is a bakery called “Al-Ramlawi”. That place sells a pie thing called Feteer Meshaltit.

Mark, in Kuwait, Motabaq is a name reserved for a dish that consists of fish and rice…like so many readers have pointed out already.

This is just like the delima of what to call rice or bread in other Arab countries. Is it 3aish or Ruz?

But we can all agree that the pic looks like some sort of a pie.

مطعم الشعب للساندوش في منطقة الشعب طبعا وكان بنفس الاسم بس اصغر من جذيه بس هل الحجي من سنه وبي بالليل يبيعون منه

there’s a place in Qurain Co-op branch 2 ,, it only do that !!! nothing else but that ! and juices ! i can link u a map ,, but i believe it would be far away from ur place ,,,
and it’s called here in kuwait moshatlet ,, cause we have our oun motabbag in kuwait which is zbadi fish with rise ..

wow, the question was ” Where can I find Matabbag in Kuwait?”… please read the above answers to know what is wrong with Kuwait.

A specific question lead to lectures and speculations not to mention wrong answers given with confidence!

And by the way, it is not nan nor paratha. It is also not misheltet nor is it the falazi that is made in mubarkya. Also, mutabag as in the fish dish is not specific to Zubaidi, it can be made with other fish… and most importantly, I do not know where it is sold in Kuwait, and read 41 replies not to find an answer, which lead to this vent.

Take care all and learn to say I don’t know.

That makes no sense… Mutabbag is 99٪ is made with zbaidi in kwt. And Kuwait was spelled Kuwait…. And the question can not be answered with I don’t know cuz it doesn’t mention a fact or a right information… Besides, humans tend to use their brains… What is wrong with that!? Gosh get a life… They were trying to help you.

Am so sorry Um abdullah, I promise to try to get a life as well as believe humans that use their brains and correct information/statistics, cause they are trying to help me!

Am also so very sorry that ” Kuwait was spelled Kuwait”, because I really don’t know what that meant, which obviously is due to the lack of “my” brain usage.

But I can’t be sorry enough that I like “Mutabbag” with shi’em, nakroor, balool and few other fish that you might not know.

I truly urge you, with all my heart, not to teach Abdulla (may allah bless him) to reply with made up or exaggerated statistics, and not to lecture spelling, logic, morality and follow it up with get a life. Please teach him to be respectful when addressing others, which will guarantee that he won’t get humiliated.

I re read my comments, but couldn’t spot where I was offensive to anyone in specific or even in general.

Regards,

i have been looking for this forever in kuwait ………….I was so happy reading KUWAIT posted ths question in the forum :D. it is very popular in indonesia, singapore and malaysia…..
hope we get the answer soon 🙂

Mark,

My man,, this post did fire up and looking at all those photos made my mouth water… now i honestly dont know where we could get this.. but i want to find out for you, myself and the reasders who are fighting over it.. so i can taste this yummy thing….

Mission EGG-MEAT-THING starts now!!!

time to call some saudi and yemeni friends..

Al Hindi

Ditto – ex-Saudi expat as well and I’m surprised its not here.

Another thing in Saudi that they have – its called “khubz tamees”.

Its this amazing, large delicious aghani bread. You can get it plain (aadi), or with sesame seeds (called “biskoot”).

That’s the absolute first thing I buy as soon as I reach my parent’s house in Saudi when I am visiting them.

No one here has a clue – and its not the bread you buy at the local bakers in co-ops.

Someone that’s been to Saudi would know what I am talking about.

Anyway – intently watching for sightings of this.

Mark,

CONFIRMED……It is available in the Bakery behind Burger King next to Salmiya co-op….next to Zain

Regards

Yousuf

If you searching for Mutabag. you can go to Aswag qreen. there is lots of restaurants same KSA rest style.. and they have Mutabag.. there is one almost in back of lulu Center called Bukhari … Rest.. they have Mutabag and laham Hashi too 😀

This is originally from India and the Indians brought it to Yemen then Saudi and to Africa
It’s not fatayer nor mishaltet
I had it in Aden , Yemen .
And it’s great.
Will be going to the above mentioned places hope they have it

Murtaba is very popular in Malaysia. Hameediyah Restaurant, Campbell Street on Penang Island offers them with chicken, mutton, fish or vegetable fillings – cost just 5 Malay Ringit (about £1)
