A freak accident. Very sad.

Henry Surtees, 18, the son of motorsport legend John Surtees was killed in a “freak” accident during a Formula Two (F2) race. You can see the accident in the video above, a car crashes into a side barrier and one of the tires flies off and bounces towards the track and hits Henry in the head while he was racing. If he was just a bit faster or just a bit slower the tire would have missed his head and hit the car. Extremely unlucky and very very sad. [YouTube]

wait… who died? the guy who was hit by a tire on his head? the one seen in the video walking away from his car?

sebamboot: I thought so as well at first. But notice the guy who got hit with the tire was wearing a white helmet. The other guy who was walking was wearing a blue one. Very sad.

Death has its very own design.

Anyway, somebody should be immediately start revising the safety aspects of these cars.

A freak tragic accident.

On the whole these cars are very safe it is likely there was a fault in the wheel brace as they are not meant to come off like that anymore.

by the looks of it he was probably killed instantly as he made no attempt to brake or turn the car and his foot was still on the accelerator when the car stopped.

Very sad, RIP Henry

The tire did not kill him, if you followed the (more info…) on youtube you’d find that it only knocked him unconscious, and that led to the harsh head-on impact on the next turn, he was stabilized on the track and then flown to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

It’s tragic and a shame. These cars are safe, but there isn’t something called a perfect design, no one would have ever imagined a blow from the sky like this one.

If you think this was freak, check out Massa’s crash from yesterday. Atleast the whole wheel found Sutees. In Massa’s case, a single spring from Barrichello’s car found Massa’s head. It looks like he’ll survive though.
