Fines Introduced for Smoking in Malls

environmentalpolice

According to an article in Al Anba newspaper, the Ministry of Interior have decided to tackle public smoking in malls by fining smokers. According to the article, first time offenders will be fined KD50 if caught smoking while repeat offenders will be fined KD100. The malls are also required to inform restaurants not to allow any smoking and no smoking signs should be put up to let restaurant diners and mall visitors know it’s a smoke-free environment. Any restaurant or mall that doesn’t comply will be fined up to KD50,000.

I thoroughly believe in the short term this will work but I’m curious to see if the police and the malls will continue to enforce this a couple of months down the line. If you remember Avenues was supposed to be a no smoking mall starting January 1st 2011 and that obviously was a complete flop.

I’m reading this post sat in Starbucks in the Avenues. As I peak up over the top of my laptop screen out onto the seating area spilling into the Mall I count roughly 10 people smoking. It’s a nice idea but like many other nice ideas attempted to be implemented in Kuwait (puts on Gandalf voice). IT SHALL NOT PASS!!

This was just reported in the Daily Mail…not sure if I was more upset that he had a porn star in the cockpit pushing buttons feeding her champagne or that he was smoking in the cockpit??? Seriously they need to get their airline in order.

“The unnamed Kuwait Airways pilot is said to have invited Los Angeles porn star ‘Chloe Mafia’ into the cockpit during a transatlantic flight from Heathrow to New York’s JFK airport. Ms Mafia, real name Chloe Kahn, claims the captain ordered her champagne, told her to sit on his knee and smoked 40 cigarettes during the flight. She claims that when she asked him about smoking and about having passengers in the cockpit, he replied that he ‘made the rules’ and others were ‘too fussy’ about safety.”

Went to Al Ajial mall, Fahaheel yesterday. Guy was smoking outside Future kids. Another guy was smoking near the Gift shop. Third guy was smoking on the way up in the Elevator.

Eid hols I travelled. The “Smoke room” at the airport was jam packed with people. The door was open. People were standing around it smoking too. It’s like, if you are within touching distance of the Smoke Room, it is okay to smoke. The entire area (Gates 3,4,5 area) was stinking of smoke. Was difficult to breathe. Cops were passing by without a care in the world. 🙁
