A woman in Kuwait has filed for divorce one week into her marriage after she discovered that husband did not like to eat peas with a fork and preferred to use bread. Accusing him of failing to abide by table manners and proper eating etiquette, she said that she was disgusted by the “shocking sight” and could not stay with her husband the rest of life and wanted a divorce, local daily Al Qabas reported on Monday.

In another case, a woman told her lawyer that she wanted to divorce her husband for insisting on squeezing the toothpaste tube in the middle and not the end. “We are always arguing,” she reportedly said. “I keep telling him that he should squeeze in the end of the tube, but he stubbornly refuses and keeps squeezing it in the middle. He is so obstinate.”

ya , although people here might not know that. Basic human rights is a precondition to even move in that direction.

Women cannot file for divorce. There are very few extreme cases where they can do this, and its only if the man is impotent or if he leaves Islam. This article is complete bullshit.

Women can file for divorce in Kuwait. I’m a Kuwaiti women and I recently filed for divorce from my husband. My former husband isn’t impotent and he didn’t leave Islam. Kuwaiti women can easily get divorced, not in very few extreme cases where they can do this. Thousands of Kuwaiti marriages end in divorce due to requests made by wives.

The Kuwait Times reported that in the past 4 years, 55% of marriages ended due to 32% of divorce requests made by husbands and 23% of divorce requests made by wives: https://news.kuwaittimes.net/55-couples-married-last-4-years-seek-divorce/

Kuwait doesn’t follow Sharia law to the fullest extent, it only applies in some cases. Kuwait’s legal system is a mix of British common law, French civil law, Egyptian civil law and Islamic law: https://books.google.com.kw/books?id=enlHK18UuaEC&pg=PA193&dq

Saudi Arabia follows the Sharia Law legal system, which means all of Saudi Arabia’s laws are derived from Sharia law.

Kuwait follows the Civil Law system, in which most laws are derived from the French legal system: https://www.s-ge.com/en/filefield-private/files/2781/field_blog_public_files/5276

i am sure “peas” and “squeez” have different meanings and we people are getting it totally wrong… lol….

pun intended

The first case the lady is dumb and narrow sighted. “Eating etiquette” or just “etiquette” is different between cultures, countries and communities. If eating peas puts her off then good riddance, the husband may be better off.

Second case they are both stubborn idiots well suited for each other.

Actually, one of the ways to support a divorce case is to show to the judge that the husband and wife are not equal (based on islamic guidance). So in case of this woman, she doesn’t want her husband, and she doesn’t want to leave the marriage without getting some of his money… so she file for divorce rather than “mukhala’a” (which is when she leave marriage without any conditions or financial benefits). So to prove to the judge that they are not equal and life will be difficult by saying things like the spouse is uneducated, uncivilized, has poor manners, isn’t sexually active… etc.

But Khul3 means the wife will have to return everything to the husband and give up all her rights. So women don’t seek khul3 usually (which they should do if THEY don’t want the man). But what they do is try to make the man look bad so a judge would force him to pay her monthly alimony, maybe even pay for an apartment, its furniture, a maid and a driver, a car and the list goes oooon…

Nope, Khul’3 isn’t usually used to the fullest extent. The man does get forced by the judge. You seem to know very little about divorce cases in Kuwait.

41% of marriages in Kuwait in the past 4 years ended in divorce due to divorce requests filed by wives: https://news.kuwaittimes.net/55-couples-married-last-4-years-seek-divorce/

Do the maths, 55% of marriages end in divorce. 32% due to divorce requests by men, 23% due to divorce requests filed by women.

They can file for divorce for any reason no matter how silly, but, it is another matter that a judge will actually grant it; he most likely won’t. Judges only grant divorce for serious reasons like domestic abuse or infidelity. These ladies are probably young and didn’t want to be married, but they wanted the goodies that come with divorce like alimony with a monthly salary and a driver and a maid.

This is what happens when people get married without actually knowing the other person. She probably got to know him after marriage and didn’t like him, and if you hate someone everything they do becomes annoying, like eating peas without a fork LOL.

So what if i knew my husband snores like roar? So what if he squeezes the toothpaste in the middle? So what if my husband has bad breath when he wakes up? So what if he prefers to eat something else than the one i prepared??? Come on we get married to compromise things. If anyone of you decided to marry u have to ask urself first if u r willing to compromise things and leave behind the “no i want it this” kinda attitude.. U will not be living on ur mother’s shadow once ur married… You will never know who u married unless u live in one roof and sleep on same bed…huh.

“So what if i knew my husband snores like roar?”
Snoring is treatable. Snoring might be an indication of a long term health issue.

“So what if my husband has bad breath when he wakes up?”
Morning breath is normal. Bad breath isn’t, could also indicate a need to visit the dentist.

“So what if he prefers to eat something else than the one i prepared???”
Be a better cook. Experiment on your husband till either his palate changes or your cooking does.

“Come on we get married to compromise things.”
Agreed.

“You will never know who u married unless u live in one roof and sleep on same bed”
True.

Compromise is an important part in any relationship.

It is becoming very silly and stupid to hear some of the excuses coming from married couples who cannot stand their spouse.

Again get to know your partner before getting married.

she never wanted to marry the dude who uses his hands to eat peas.she might be interested in some other guy.she is making lame excuses to get rid of her husband
im sure the amount of mehr is high.
Moneyyy

They should stop bickering over small things and work on their relationship.

Divorce is getting out of hand all over the world.

On another note, is it true that in Islam there are some cases where when a woman who divorces her husband must give back everything she ever took from him as well as pay for everything he spent on her. Hey I am only asking because I heard that this happens sometimes and could it really be true? As a man, men should never ask for things back from any woman.

What’s amazing about Kuwait is that almost regardless of the topic you can’t get a clear answer. Happens frequently in the classroom. I’ll ask a question about culture or a policy and there will be at least 2 opposing answers. I frequently see the same phenomenon in these blog comments. Story gets reported and someone will tell you it’s not true and then cite a reason why. At the same time, in spite of what might be a law, we know otherwise. For such a small country how can so many people be so certain of what they know and at least half of them be wrong? It’s part of what makes Kuwait a unique place — just my opinion.

Kuwaitis have different cultural values and traditions, it depends on ethnic background. Ethnic Bedouin Kuwaitis have a conservative, tribal culture and their cultural outlook is very different from urban Kuwaitis.

Urban Kuwaitis are known as ”Hadhar”, they are the largest indigenous ethnic group in Kuwait. They’re also the business elite and ruling class (Al Sabah monarchy and founding families). Urban Kuwaitis are mostly descendants of Arabs who have been sedentary for many centuries. They lost their tribal ties and strict Bedouin traditions centuries ago. Most urban Kuwaitis are more open-minded with liberal cultural values and norms whereas the majority of ethnic Bedouin Kuwaitis retain their traditional Bedouin cultural values and customs, especially when it comes to marriage. Although a minority of ethnic Bedouin Kuwaitis are culturally liberal.

Another ethnic group in Kuwait are the Ajam (non-Arabs). Most Shia Kuwaitis are sedentary descendants of Persians. Their culture resembles urban Kuwaitis.

+ Culture is different from legislation. Kuwait’s legal system is a mix of British common law, French civil law, Egyptian civil law and Sharia law. Sharia law only applies in some cases, not all.

In urban Kuwaiti society, it is culturally acceptable for urban Kuwaiti women to date before marriage.

In contrast, in ethnic Bedouin Kuwaiti society, women are expected to live their lives according to Bedouin customs. Their culture is tribal-oriented. For example, they identify themselves as part of a tribe and most ethnic Bedouins speak Arabic in a Bedouin accent. But many ethnic Bedouin Kuwaiti women are empowered women with university degrees, even PHDs. I don’t want to make unjust generalisations. It depends on how long they have been urbanised people and their income/wealth. Wealthy ethnic Bedouins are usually more open and liberal.

That may be a reason for such a diversity of opinions all depends from which point they are given and all of them will have a supportive proof (cultural, religious or legal) while at the same time contradictory.

Did you hear the one about the woman in Nuzha who filed for divorce because she wanted to find out what it’s like to be divorced?
