From Ghana to Kuwait, to Mahboula

Early last month I posted an article about Abdulai Shani, a former teacher back home in Ghana who got an opportunity to come to Kuwait to work as a security guard and earn good money. On arrival it turned out all the promises were empty ones and he was taken instead into the middle of the desert to live in a tent surrounded by a barren landscape to take care of sheep. After posting that article I asked if anybody would be able to help Abdulai get a better job. I received a lot of responses (thank you everybody!) and after filtering through them I ended up connecting Abdulai with a reader named Abdulrahman. Abdulrahman visited Abdulai in the desert and after meeting him decided to contact his sponsor. To quickly summarize things, he managed to convince his sponsor to let Abdulai go, at first the sponsor agreed and then on the day Abdulai was supposed to leave, the sponsor backtracked and asked for money. Abdulrahman ended up paying the sponsor off and once he collected Abdulai’s passport and civil ID, he handed them to Abdulai and then they drove off towards the city and back to civilization.

Abdulai is now living in Mahboula in an apartment he is sharing with a couple of other guys from Ghana. His new sponsor Abdulrahman is a great guy, they called me last weekend from the Avenues where they were out having lunch. Abdulai’s paperwork is currently being finalized and he’ll be starting his new job soon. He’s clearly in a much better place and he’s thankful to everyone.

As a south asian expatriate who faces racism and bias everyday, this kind of news gives hope.
Having said that how come educated Kuwaitis donot even try to raise their voices for the downtrodden.

What pisses me of, it the last minute demand for money.
This is what makes this a human trade and end of the day slavery.

I hope the guy got his salary in full!!

Allah is good. May Allah bless you more Mark and the kind hearted Mr. Abdulrahman. The journey to ending modern day slavery may still be far and difficult, but this is a big leap of positivity.

Listen here Mark, how dare you complain about petty little things like modern day slavery, you are shining a light on bad things just to try and embarrass us, no possible good can come from open discussion, it’s not your country, you will never be welcome here, if you don’t like it, you should just leave, and I hope the customs officers punch your Canadia Leb face on the way out!

This blog became a way for people to have good life that they deserve. We have to learn in a difficult way. God is good in such a way they blessed the guy with someone like Abdulrahman and mark for being the way to reach abdulai.

Thank you for using your position and the power of your blog to do good, I applaud you and Abdelrahman for taking a stand and making a positive change. We need more people like you in the world.

First of all I will like to thank God for bringing me this far. God is indeed worth worshiping. I nearly gave up but Mr. Mark together with Mr. Abdul Rahaman with the help of God restored my hope and faith, this shows how God can make a turning point in the life of a believer. ATAKBIR……. My warm and heartfelt thanks goes to Mr Abdul Rahaman and his mother for their time, effort and the unconditional love they showed me. They actually exhibited that there are still practical Muslims who are the real example of Islam. I think kindness and generosity runs in Mr Abdul Rahaman’s family because his mother is even more generous and kind to the extend when I saw her at first with her employees she made me missed my mom. She is so free and down to earth with love for all people. She is a very good mother and a good leader. May God grant her all what she pray for. As for Mr Rahaman, its only God who can pay you back for what you have done for me. I still remember the first day when you were trying to make your way to my tent on the desert, you lost your way several times and it took you about 3 hours wandering on the desert to locate me but you never gave up. You walked your talk, everything you said you did it. Thank you so much for everything. Not forgetting your friend please thank him on my behalf.

This issue of deception on the part of these agents is really serious. My name is Eva, I also work as a domestic help in kuwait. The agent who brought me told me I’ll work for six months as a maid, and then afterwards, she’ll help me to pay off my employer so I can go outside to work. She even told me That I could get a visa and move to an European country. That was the only reason why I accepted to come to this country. Like everyone else that comes here, I only got here to realise it was a lie. I hAbe been here for a year and two months, I don’t even here from this agent. My first employerwasn’t good so I told her I couldn’t work with after three months. After days of threats and verbal abuses,I was finally taken to the office.
I was taken to a new house but God being so good my employer is a good and kind woman. I just pray I finish my contract and go back to my country, so I can persue my education to the university and become the lawyer that I’ve always dreamt of becoming.
