Goodbye Alarm Clock

Back in 2001 when I first moved back to Kuwait from university and started my first job, the first thing I did with my very first salary ever was buy an alarm clock. It wasn’t just any alarm clock, it was the Nakamichi SoundSpace 3. The alarm clock had a CD player and was composed of three square shaped pieces, two were clocks, one for each side of the bed, while the third piece was the subwoofer. It cost me KD220 back then which was basically half my salary, but I used to love the Nakamichi brand and this was love at first sight. The picture above is the oldest picture I have of the alarm clock and its from 2003.

The alarm clock stayed with me for 16 years, and in that time I went through 4 jobs, 4 different blogs, a marriage, a divorce, 5 cars, 3 apartments and 2 dogs. Last night after watching an episode of the show “Hoarders“, I decided I would finally throw the alarm clock out. Now I regret it of course.

It’s pretty sad and reminded me of the old IKEA lamp commercial. I sometimes ask myself if I was to start all over again, would I be able to leave all my things behind? After throwing out my beloved alarm clock, I think I can. This post is dedicated to you alarm clock, goodbye.

I remember the Nakamichi store in Plaza Salmiya in the basement. It was such an awesome store and I was always fascinated with their products

I was just seeing that site. They also have Bluetooth headphones that look like any other headphones you can buy

You mean you just threw away a working piece of art?
How about listing it on the classifieds? Poor people like me could finally own a Nakamichi.

all soundspace 3’s ran into issues with the CD player lid. mine for example wouldn’t stay open so when pressed open it would open and then close. to set the clock you need to have the cover open so it was a pretty annoying task just to set the time or alarm clock. i wouldn’t post something in the classified section that wasn’t working right. plus the building cleaners took it this morning so maybe they’ll find good use for it.

On a similar note – heard a podcast by Marie Kondo and her tips on decluttering and organizing.

One of her suggestions is to thank the object before letting it go for the purpose it served.

Sounds a bit looney, but in practice it is something that I found giving me peace when letting go of some really expensive stuff as well that was of no use anymore.

nowadays, your phone can be ur alarm, during my university, i set everything, dr appointment, classes, exams, travelling.

Very cool evolution of the kick-ass model alarm clock. I enjoyed reading your composition. Where did you go to university?….just curious

I wonder which company would give 440KD a month to a fresh graduate back in 2001? and perhaps which job as well…..
