Nu Hotel

Has anyone stayed at Nu Hotel or any other hotel in Brooklyn? I’m looking to spend max $200 a night on a room in New York and all the good places in Manhattan are like $300 and up. How practical is it staying in Brooklyn and taking the subway to Manhattan every day?

Update: How about W Hotel in Hoboken New Jeresey?

Update2: After hours and hours of research and reading I ended up booking at Nu Hotel. I’m going to be staying in NY for 12 days and needed a decently sized room and most of the ones in and around Times Square were pretty tiny. I don’t mind staying in tiny rooms (I love EasyHotel Paddington) but I could never stay in one for 12 days. Subway station is 5 minutes from the hotel and I can get to times square in 20 minutes. Takes me as long to get to work every morning so its no biggie.

If you can recommend me a decent one that would be great. Most of the ones I found looked very dodgy and had crappy reviews on tripadvisor.

Boyousef there aren’t tons of hotels in manhattan at that price. I was just there last month and even the 2 stars are around $200.

Mark: It’s not practical at all…The problem with hotels in Manhattan is that they’re really tiny but if it’s just for 1-2 then you should be fine.

Anyways the best way to get a nice hotel with an amazing price is to do it through hotwire. First check out what hotels are available for the dates you’re booking by marking down how many stars and amenities they have and then go to betterbidding.com. You will most likely get the hotel listed on their if you do it properly.

If you need help shoot me an email and i’ll let you know which hotels are good as I always go down there. You’ll also find great reviews on the website.

Nope. It really depends on what you’re going for and how long you’re staying.

You’d be wasting too much time getting back and forth. In terms of staying in NJ if you’re renting a car you’d be paying an $8 every time you enter and leave NJ. There are large buses as well that leave from all over manhattan but you wouldn’t be saving much in the end.

You can easily get yourself a 4star hotel in Manhattan for $200 all in using hot wire…..

Doubletree Chelsea for about $160= 3.5 stars

New Yorker for about $150= 3 Stars etc

The Roosevelt Hotel. It’s within walking distance to Times Square, about a 10 minute walk. And it’s really close to 5th Ave.

I would recommend the Westin Hotel, it usually has good prices around 200$…hands down the best place to stay at it a block off of times square and the rooms are amazing…Good luck!!

If you are taking the metro beware of ginormous rats that can gobble up cats. your best bet for good pricing would be a hotel near an airport…

I live 4 hours outside the city. When we go to visit NYC, we stay in NJ. We usually stay at the Holiday Inn in Newark, NJ. Costs about $75 through orbitz.com. We then take the NJ Transit to NYC. There is a free shuttle from the hotel to the Newark Airport. You can then take the NJ transit from there to NYC. If you are planning on renting a car, you can drive from Newark to Staten Island and take the free ferry across (Staten Island Ferry…they have a website..google it). You have to take the free ferry…it is a lifetime experience. It even takes you past the statue of liberty. Great pictures to take!!!!

And staying in Manhattan is to darn expensive. Staying in Brooklyn is the best option if you want to stay in NYC. But remember that it is full of thugs. Not a safe place. Hope this helped!

Hi Mark.

I don’t recommend staying anywhere else than Manhattan. You really don’t want to waste time commuting, it will be such a pain.

As far as prices go, It all depends on the dates of your trip. I suggest using Kayak.com because you can set the price range you’re looking for. If you are not familiar with Kayak, it’s aggregator for many hotel booking websites.

I would definitely recommend staying in the downtown Brooklyn area (Brooklyn Heights) and commuting to Manhattan. Manhattan is about two or three subway stops from downtown Brooklyn. Brooklyn Heights is a beautiful neighborhood! Or you can take a nice walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to downtown Manhattan. While in Brooklyn be sure to stop by the Grand Army Plaza Library, the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. There are double decker bus tours of Brooklyn also!If you’re feeling adventurous take a walk down Fulton street straight to BedStuy home of the Notorious B.I.G LOL! Just kidding but not really! HA

Oh and for the love of God don’t go to New Jersey!

Hey Mark,

I don’t recommend staying in brooklyn or jersey. It is extremely impractical and a pain to go back and forth. Staying in a hotel in NY allows you to go back whenever, throw your shopping bags and do whatever you need… You will also end up spending money on cabs that you couldve spent on the hotel and stay in the city..

Try:
-Westin Hotel (best size and service for your money)
– Hotel Q T (If you don’t mind something small and practical- a little more than easy hotel)
– City Club Hotel

There are many more..

Brooklyn and New Jersey are not worth the extra cost. Stay in Manhattan and save the headache and other transportation costs.

mark try the time hotel its located right next to time square and the price was reasonable stayed there the last time i went down there

Find a hotel in Staten Island and take the ferry over to Manhattan. There is no bridge or tunnel linking Staten Island to Manhattan, so you have to take the ferry (20 min ride with beautiful scenery). That’s your cheapest and most scenic option.

W (Y) …
after my first encounter with them in Doha Qatar, i was blown over by their service and have to admit they earned my loyalty… i dont think W Manhattan will be anything less

Dont use hotwire.com!!
I used it to book a place in Soho in downtown NYC and its was WAAAY off in terms of location!

Stick to hotels in manhattan… u can find anything and everything… whatever money you save in Brooklyn… ull probably end up spending it to get to and from the city (including wasting ur time!)

Mark, as usual, my brain is not functional when I want it to be so I dont really remember the name of hotels I stayed in BUT I DO REMEMBER that i was worried being in Brooklyn -my worries were uncalled for.

People were really nice, very helpful, nothing messy/grimy or too loud.

Subways were amazing aside from the un-avoid-able smell. Plus cheap transportation.

I used to study in Brooklyn, and the transportation from Brooklyn to Manhattan is very easy. If you are using the subway you have to always keep the subway map with you to check, because sometimes they change the direction of the trains. Taxis are fine too, but avoid it during rush hour because you wont find one.

Mark, $200 ? will not take you anywhere but brooklyn. the good thing is that you will be able to get used to the subway which is fun and it has unique experience. living in Brooklyn means u will be able to save money coz hotels there can go cheaper than $200. well ok, staying for less than a weak go Manhattan …

My wife & I just came back from a 2-week vacation in US. While visting New York, we stayed at Best Western (Robert Treat) Hotel in Newark NJ. We paid $438 (tax inclusive) for 4 nights stay. Their room was spacious & clean, just nevermind the free breakfast. The hotel is very close to Newark Penn Station (5min walk). We just purchased a weekly NJ Transit pass ($35). It is a 20min train ride from Newark Penn Stn to NY Penn Stn. From NY Penn Stn, you could easily transfer to NYC subway. There’s even a NJ Transit train in Newark that will take you directly to WTC stn in NYC. To get to JFK airport from NJ is like this: Newark Penn-NY Penn-Jamaica-Sky Train-JFK.

You may want to consider staying in Queens, rather than Manhattan (which is obviously expensive). A friend suggested a good hotel there which you could also counter check in TripAdvisor. The name of the hotel is Howard Johnson Express Inn Woodside. I think their average rate per night is $100. Smaller rooms but close to subway station.

Now, if you really insists on staying in Manhattan, there are lots of apartments advertised on craigslist. I cheapest I searched before cost like $70/night in Midtown for 1 bedroom spacious apartment. Looks decent on pictures though. But most of them will require to make advance deposit which includes 50% of the rental fee, cleaning fee and damage deposit fee.

Hope this helps.

I have went to school and lived in mnahatten so I know a thing or two about the good old Apple, mark why dont you just stay at a furnished loft, they have beutiful 1, 2,3 bedrooms lofts that are $100 a night with free internet, and cable, fully equiped kichen and appliances, living room, plazma(LCD)TVS so much better than staying at a hotel and the locations are amazing!! Please look at http://www.craigslist.com in the manhatten area for new york short term vacation rental and you will find all you need. Hope you find what you are looking for Mark… Have FUN in New York bring me back a I LOVE NY T-shirt πŸ˜‰

Mark,

All the way to New York, I suggest you spoil yourself a bit and pay more, even if the net is from your pocket!!!!
You live once and you do not want to spend it communing in NY…

Mind you the Number 7 train can be fun…if in doubt ask john rocker….(you need to know baseball to know that)

So to Quote the famous john Rocker For a story published in the January 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated, Rocker made a number of comments stemming from his experiences in New York City, and answered a question about whether he would ever play for the New York Yankees or the New York Mets. Rocker’s response was accused of being racist, homophobic, and sexist:

β€œ I’d retire first. It’s the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you’re riding through Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing “”

Enjoy…..

Hey Mark,

Someone mentioned Hotel QT. This hotel is now called Room Mate Grace. Its in a fantastic location and pretty decent boutique/modern hotel. They have a really cool indoor swimming pool with a swim up bar which is heated and open 24 hours a day. I have stayed here and remember that one night it was like a nightclub but in a pool. Check out the reviews on tripadvisor. I stayed in a Deluxe room and I know for a fact at the time it was less than $200 a night. Pretty neat, and would def recommend it.

Try the affinia hotels…

The rooms were nice and insanely massive compared to ny standards… didnt like the staff at ALL, from the doorman to the reception!

there is a hotel called hotel edward or smtin like that, EXACTLY at time square, stayed there last year, was amazing, and it wasnt over 170 dollars. was perfect. it was literally steps away from timesqare.

there is a hotel called hotel edison or smtin like that, EXACTLY at time square, stayed there last year, was amazing, and it wasnt over 170 dollars. was perfect. it was literally steps away from timesqare.

Mark,
Join (no cost) several of the major hotel chain frequent user programs. My wife and I stayed at the Hilton New York (great location – Avenue of the Americas and 53rd Street) last October for $179 (unadvertised and made available for a limited time only by on-line invitation to Hilton Club members) and for $20 extra were upgraded to the Executive level (great breakfasts, drinks and free wifi). I get those kind of offers all the time from the big hotel chains members clubs.
Ray

You should definetly check out the Intercontinental (The Barclays). It is at a great safe location and a decent price. I stayed there last summer for less than $200 a night. Its a decent hotel clean hotel with rooms larger than the typical NYC hotels.

Ok I just checked it out. If your booking a flight + hotel through expedia or other similar sites, it will run you about $250. If you book it seperately, it will run you $309.
Goodluck!

Hey Mark,

We always stay at Howard Johnson’s in Manhatten.

we got $119 a night back in 2005. We booked online. The check-in guy checked his monitor twice because he could not believe we got such a low rate. If you check in in person it will be loads higher.

****Make sure you visit China town and grab Nat a $10 Loius Vuitton bag from one of the street vendors πŸ˜‰

The subway’s a pain in the butt for the first couple of times. Brooklyn-Manhattan trips are easy blindfolded though but yet again I live in London..

@Tazman

John Rocker is an asswipe! LOL! The mayor of NY takes the subway, even Wall Street CEOs take the subway.

Subway rides are very cheap, an unlimted seven day day pass is $27. You can ride the subway as many times as you like.

Taking the ferry or a water taxi is OK but depending on where you have to go in Manhattan you will still end up taking the train, yellow cab or the bus.

I haven’t read through all of your msgs–but I live in NY and its totally possible to stay in New Jersey or Brooklyn and take the train into the city. It would probably be far more reasonable and leave you with extra funds to do more fun things during your visit.

Mark

The W in Hoboken is great. The PATH train is literally availble every few minutes to the city and seriously Hoboken ain’t as bad – it certainly isn’t Newark or the shady parts of Jersey City.
It is college town and has high bar density (not a deterrent, I suppose). And seriously with nyc right across the river, you have the option of either the train mentioned above or the NY WATERWAY ferry from boken to 33rd street -which is kinda cool ride.

Eitherways youll be in the city within 10-12 minutes.

W Times Square. Pay more and save on taxis, subways and time. Time is more expensive and this way you can shop or walk or do anything and in 5 minutes you can go back to rest. A plus side is you can wake-up after 3am ( because of time difference) go down for an early breakfast and all the shops are open.
Plus the view is amazing and its got a Chinese laundry place 50m away that can do laundry per pound and its like 3 or 4 $ per pound for a 4 hours laundry service. Comes handy if you want to carry less clothes.

If you do stay in Hoboken, go to Carlos’ Bakery–its the bakery that is featured on the TV show “Cake Boss”. Italian Canolis to die for!

Stay away from bklyn and nj.
Hobooken is nice to visit but don’t stay the nite.
Here is a trick that might help if you are staying for more than 4 or 5 nites. Purchase a AAA membership for almost 60-80 dollars and u will get a discounted rate in those $300 hotels and it would bring the rate down to the $200 range.

Hey there, lsn if you want to find cheap hotels all over the USA try this website

http://www.hotwire.com

you will get some really good prices pretty much in any state you stay in, as for staying in BK/Queens, i wouldnt recommend it as it can be dangerous at night, try to stay within Manhatten, as you will find it to be much safer and there is usually alot of cops on each corner, n e wayz hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to email me..

Eng. Nimer

DON’T stay in Jersey it will cost you 60$ just to get to Manhattan because it’s in another state! so a around trip will cost you 120$!
which brings you to 320$ and that’s the cost for a lot of Manhattan’s decent hotels! NYC is one of my favorite places in the whole world! I go there a lot since it’s pretty close to my school! You have to visit Armani 5th ave store they have a chocolate store in it and it’s the only one in the states!! it’s soooo good.
Hope you enjoy your trip
P.S. Don’t use the Metro to go back to Brooklyn at night.

Brooklyn is awesome!!! If you stay in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area there is a lot to do and amazing people. If you are close to the Bedford stop you take the L train and will be in the Lower East Side in one stop. 3 stops and you’re in Union Square.

Ive always advised friends to stay in the Hoboken-Secauscus area. Lots of hotels within a direct bus ride to Times Square, my personal favorite (if u can find a reservation):
Hyatt Place Secaucus/Meadowlands
