Amazon Kindle

Kindle

So Amazon just released the Kindle which according to them is what the iPod is to music, the Kindle is to books and magazines. It looks really ugly but the concept is really strong and I think has a lot of potential. You purchase books and subscribe to magazines and newspapers through the Kindle device and it all works wirelessly without the need of a computer or Internet connection. The problem is the device connects wirelessly using EV-DO which I know very little about and I doubt works here in Kuwait. You can check out the Amazon page for more information and better pictures. it wont work…EV-DO is basicly 3G. so that means it neads a carrier, so it will only work in the US, becuase the only way you can get stuff on it (books) is through the EV-DO, which is on Sprint (the mt…zain of the US).

from Wikipedia
” Evolution-Data Optimized or Evolution-Data only, abbreviated as EV-DO or EVDO and often EV, is a telecommunications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. It uses multiplexing techniques such as Code division multiple access (CDMA) as well as Frequency division duplex (FDD) to maximize the amount of data transmitted. It is standardized by 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) as part of the CDMA2000 family of standards and has been adopted by many mobile phone service providers around the world – particularly those previously employing CDMA networks, as opposed to GSM networks.”

i have the sony reader, its great , more stylish then kindle . the only thing that sucks is their e-book online store need a US credit card.

that stupid amazon kindle cant read PDF based on one guy review. one more thing if you have microsoft word file you cant open it unless you send it to your email and amazon convert it and its not free.
Sony reader is the best.

Works only in the US.
I definitely prefer the natural feel of paper.

However, i think the problem with this is, how many things do you have to carry around with you on your way to work? (laptop, ipod, blackberry, cellphone, keys, wallet… + Kindle…)

We received our Kindle in late December and the wireless was working from here in Kuwait. Great stuff, we bought books from the device and I have a Canadian newspaper subscription to the Globe and Mail wirelessly transfer to it. But the last three days it isn’t connecting. “Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time”. Perhaps they have blocked it now in Kuwait as Amazon doesn’t support the Kindle in Kuwait. We’ll try it somewhere else than in our house to see if it works elsewhere but I’m doubting it.
