A lighted sajjadah or prayer rug comes from a Turkish designer, Soner Özenç. The Britain-based designer uses light as an integral element in his imaginative creations. This modern piece that he calls Sajjadah 1426 (1426 is the year 2005 in the Islamic calendar), combines technology and the Muslim culture.
Sajjadah 1426 is a piece of art and a great example of the electroluminescent phosphor printing technology. It is also quite practical. It assists the person who performs the divine service of prayers, called namaz, not just by creating an amazing atmosphere, but by actually finding the right direction to pray towards.
With the help of an embedded compass module, the lighted motifs of the rug turn brighter the closer the rug is turned toward the direction of Mecca.

Its perfect for fajr prayer, I always hate opening the lights as I just woke up to pray so this could really come in handy ..
if it wasn’t for finding the right direction to pray towards, I would have said that this is bullshit. Apparently the only good thing about it is that feature of finding the right direction…

From my point of view this shouldn’t be taken as a reverence boost due to the atmosphere it creates but only as a artistic prayer rug with a useful compass, religion doesn’t “advance” with time, Islam was made by a perfect god perfect as it is for all time and place without the need of any additives by anybody or anything.

It would not have been easy to interface a compass module with the electro-phosphor wires…
Maybe a design with the glow only at the sides or at a small space on the front would be enough. But obviously, the one above is only a show piece and not a commercial product. So, the designer probably took the freedom to illuminate the whole mat. Im sure, as a commercial product, there would be lesser glowing wires.
