Bring your own food

I was standing in my hotel lobby waiting for my ride when a van full of Americans arrived. Nothing strange except every one of them was carrying their own box of bottled water. I guess someone told them to bring their own food with them to Egypt it was a funny sight.

Update: In case I wasn’t clear above, it looked like they brought the bottles with them from the US not from a grocery store on the street.

Well what are they supposed to do? Ordering bottled water from the hotel is always a ripoff, more so in egypt, and drinking tap water in 3rd world countries is a no-no. oh wait they are american ha ha.

Zaydoun- becoming what? Kuwaitis (and arabs in general) have ALWAYS been ridiculous about bringing food into hotels. I’ve seen some pack a mini stove and rice to have the accompanying maid cook meals in the room. It’s insane.

Mark,

Why is everyone making a big deal about bottled water? (commenting on people’s comment from previous posts)

Most second and third world countries we go to don’t have clean tap water. I would never drink tap water from Kuwait (unless its filtered)

Even in many countries in Europe don’t have clean tap water.

So yeah, what’s the big deal ?

lol i’ve snuck in toast and spread cheese 😛 whats wrong with that beats a 50$ egg omelet. and we’re talking about egypt better be safe than sorry.

Mark, what you saw is very normal, since a water bottle costs ~15 pounds in the hotel, while its cost something like 1.25 pounds from any corner store.

i agree with buying your water from outside the hotel for cost reasons. the pricier the hotel the more logical this is and they can’t say anything about it.

in the case of egypt, it may actually be safer too.

lol there’s nothing strange about that, bottles of water better than bringing machla (household food for month) into the hotel, that would be kinda weird.

overall, come on….it’s Egypt!

It’s a common sight. Be careful when you buy bottled water. The actual price is around 2 Egyptian Pounds only. But some shops charge you 5 – 20 Egyptian Pounds. Best option is to bargain! Yeahhh, sounds funny to bargain for a bottle of water…but believe me people over there cheat you a lot, be it water, juice, clothes or anything!

guys maybe i wasnt clear in my post, they brought their water bottles from the US or wherever they were not from a bakala on the street. It was some brand I hadn’t seen before.

Also I don’t know what kind of hotels you guys stay at but water bottles are always free, including here in Grand Hyatt, room service always leave 2 bottles at least, I have 4 because I drink a lot plus I tipped the room service guy 😉

First of all,, even American are crazy bottled water drinker and many researchers and the FDA (www.fda.gov) found out that some water filled as just tap water by many companies and it is rip off, beside some plastics today should have a code of safely if you try to see at the bottom of the bottle.

Secondly: New custom security even bottled water is not allowed on the plane, so either they got it from the plane at the end of their flight, or the airport upon arrival or their tourist guy is giving it to them as a courtesy. Another hint when I lived in Kuwait 30 years ago the International testing after the filtration Kuwait had the best water and that was attested by pediatricians. If you go Taiwan or the Orient, you are recommended not even brush your teeth with a tap water….. Kuwait is still better than many countries.

Tip the guy for extra water… that is so Egypt. Before anybody gets anal and starts dissing Kuwait about god knows what, I say… yes, I know, and I suffer too.

My brother buys bottled water from Kuwait whenever he travels to Egypt. He has medical condition and can only drink bottled water. He told me that it is ridiculously expensive to buy Evian’s bottled water, if you are lucky to find the real Evian and not bottles filled with tap water.

Les Americano’s! Always on top of thier game… yeah.. who in thier right senses would like to buy water in Egypt knowing well that its gotta be tap filled and in some cases toilet bowl filled!
And whats this poop talk about Kuwaits’ water being fit? Ever heard of high levels of mercury… keep off that Hammour please….
