Jumeirah public beach

I’m not a fan of Dubai but it’s really getting difficult not to appreciate what they’re doing there. This weekend I ended up going to the Jumeirah public beach and was left extremely impressed. The beach was huge, super clean and the water was crystal clear. There were a ton of sailboats, kite surfers and everyone was just minding their own business. I loved it.

Been there 2 weekends now. It’s awesome how Dubai is providing this totally for free whereby here its compromised water to say the least and the decent clean beaches are restricted to expensive private resorts. Real pity !

Here in Kuwait the sea water is turbid due to the sediments from the Euphrates and Tigris, thats why it gets clearer on the southern beach.

As for the cleanliness of the beach. Its a moot effort and its the same reason why the Shahid park had those walls come up. Beaches are relatively cleaner on weekdays and get messy on weekends. People with beach houses know how its a worthless effort cleaning beaches just to have more junk wash up over the upcoming week and more junk after rains.

The “cleanliness” law (kanoon al nadafa) isn’t being implemented in a population where the majority don’t even care.

What is there not to be a fan of? Sure, its new, plasticky and all the rest of the adjectives people use to describe it,but when you live in the GCC,you cant help but compare apple to apple, especially if you are an expat.Yes, they have amazing public beaches where you dont have to be a member and fork out a couple of thousand dinars a year just to go to the beach. One might argue that you can drive up the coast in kuwait to the Julea area and take advantage of their public beaches and clean water, but its far out, tiny, and part of the enjoyment of public beaches is the cool crowds.

Same goes for a million other things that you can do in dubai (that dont involved booze and clubbing).Have you checked out their parks?

It makes me sad when i see the beaches and the sea here. Soooo much potential especially with the better weather wehave here. People just do notcare here. There are enough workers if they need to keep thebeaches clean. But placing more wastebins would be a help and for most teaching people to respect nature and not leave their rubbish behind. Who does that??? Total lack of pride inthis country. There is soooo much wealth here so they canmake it like Dubai here, easily and without the booze. But to me it looks like nobody wants to spend their own money in Q8 unless it benefits themself.
I love beaches, have lived my whole life at walking distances to a beach (yes also 7 years in Dubai wirh indeed their gorgeous beaches and clean clean sea) here I stare longingly at the sea but am afraid to go in it due to all the horror stories of it being poluted with all sorts. Makes me sad how this country which could be soooo amasing doesnt grap the opportunities.

It is the difference of a formative, functioning government with an expat/local population that loves this country and a government that doesn’t care with an expat/local population that is quick to trash this country. That is the difference.

its ridiculous how beautiful the beaches in Dubai are which are FREE and here a person going to the hilton would have to pay 20-30 KD to visit a crappy piece of beach…..I love the public beach in Dubai…no one hassles you, its clean and well maintained, and people actually CARE about keeping it clean…

Nina, because the residents love Dubai and people make their home there – residents respect the government and the people of the UAE. It is really what sarah stated above, it is the difference between a functioning, formative government that cares and a government here that is not functioning and doesn’t care. But I have always been in favor of an environmental ministry in Kuwait, that would be in charge of environmental matters in the country, which would be inclusive of a massive recycling program similar to what we have in Dubai. I think there should be a seat in Parliament for an Environmental Minister who brings environmental issues to the forefront in the Parliament’s agenda. It is very sad how damaged this country is and how much people revile this nation. In country’s like this the attitudes must come from the government, then the attitudes of the residents will follow. But Mark ran a post prior to this with residents painting walls in Kuwait, maybe in Kuwait it will come from the residents first and then the government?

For someone who doesn’t like Dubai, you seem to spend a lot of time going there Mark.

Dubai is a wonderful example of a place that has embraced cultural differences and made all feel welcome.

I couldn’t agree more with the above posts, people would never dream of littering beaches, roads etc.

There is tremendous loyalty amongst the population of expats and locals, no animosity, just a unified sense of pride to be a part of one of the most exciting countries in the world.

I dont go often. Last time I went was in February and I was sent there by Porsche, before that I went for a night in October so I could run the marathon. Wouldn’t call that spending a lot of time in Dubai.

Just out of curiosity, why don’t you like it?

It has everything going for it. superb entertainment (music, concerts, theatre) interesting cultural events, exhibitions, gorgeous venues, super beaches and fantastic shopping….so what don’t you like exactly?

Lol. Well that’s not a reason to dislike it. Embrace it and admire it for what it is, a burgeoning world class city.

Why should Kuwait have it? It’s done nothing to deserve any such riches.

A simple, backward, lazy parasitic and racist culture with zero innovation or initiative to change anything for the good of its future generations.

Just lie back and be spoon fed by a totally incompetent Government.

That’s what Kuwait should be…. and is.

Wow, harsh way of putting it. Doesn’t make it less true though.

Unfortunately, I’ve ran out of fucks to give about this country. I still love it, but the way members of this society behave (believable selfishness, lack of regard to others’ and public property, flat out corruption, ..etc). Heck, I’m not even sure it still qualifies as a society!

I think kuwaiti society will go back to being the decent folk they used to be once the oil money runs out. but by then, it’ll be too late.

If dubai got were it is today by doing honest work, then good for them. They deserve it.

Ahmad

Just an observation:
How many ‘intelligent’ people acutally ‘speak up’ on issues? Yeah..not many.

Brain & (Inner)Brawn…Awesome Combination there Real & Jake…!!!

Let me just give you guys a different perspective on things. Yes Dubai is great, amazing, fun and is a very exciting place to live. However, Ive lived here twice now and have also live in Kuwait….guess what i prefer my simple life in Kuwait!!
Crazy or what, i mean come on most westerners in Kuwait would swap shoes any day of the week. Grass is always greener etc etc

Well when we lived in Kuwait the friends you made were “real” friends local and other unlike the FAKE people here, and yes there is a lot!!!
Its a very transient place, a lot of people here care for me, me oh and me!

Great life if you have a lot of money to do all the wonderful things Dubai has to offer. You also need a STRONG marriage as there is a lot of women who would do anything to be with a western man!! Ive seen a lot of marriages go down the pan here. Oh and you can not save money (impossible) and at the end of the day isn’t that why a lot of westerners are here and away from their families?

Ok rant over and just to end on a positive 🙂 i love the beaches, shopping, schooling and greenery and its just a beautiful place isnt it.
