A Week with the Nintendo Switch

Post by Mark

I’ve had the Nintendo Switch gaming console for nearly a week now and so I figured I’d give my first impressions on it in case you’ve been contemplating on getting one.

So far in my short time with the Switch I’m loving it. I purchased two games for it, the first was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (of course) which has been scoring a 10/10 on all gaming sites. The second game I purchased was the racing game Fast RMX which is similar to the old Wipeout series except a lot faster.

I’ve been spending on average around 5 hours a day playing Zelda and I love how with the Switch I could be playing on my TV one minute, then put a UFC fight on TV and continue playing Zelda off the Switch’s built-in screen. I love how I can be sitting on my couch playing Zelda, but then leave the house and take the Switch with me so I could continue playing while waiting for a friend to meet me at a coffee shop. The Switch is a home console and a portable console at the same time and thats easily my favorite thing about it.

Battery life has been perfectly fine with me since when I do play on the Switch when on the go, its usually for short bursts. Since the Switch uses USB-C to charge, I can charge it with a battery pack if I’ll be playing for longer than 3 hours at a time like when I’m traveling. My MacBook Pro also uses USB-C to charge, so when I travel, I’ll charge the Switch using my laptop charger saving me the need to pack the Switch charger. The size of the Switch is pretty big compared to a phone or a Nintendo DS, but yet it somehow still manages to fit into the back pocket of my skinny jeans. I ordered a case for it from Waterfield which should be arriving next week, so that should make carrying it around easier.

If you’ve been thinking about getting the Switch then just go ahead and make the plunge. There aren’t that many games on it right now but honestly, Zelda alone is worth getting the Switch even if no other games come out on it ever again. Finding a Switch for a reasonable price on the other hand is going to be a challenge. If you can’t order one online then you’ll have to keep looking for reasonably priced one locally. The cheapest I found was on Al Fuhod for KD139 and Konami-X also had them for KD140. But, both are currently sold out and both probably had them that low for promotional purposes. Online is still your best bet.

“Zelda alone is worth getting the Switch even if no other games come out on it ever again” that’s a pretty big commitment, Mark. Since I purchased Horizon Zero Dawn 2 weeks ago, I think it will keep me busy for a really good while before ever thinking about Switch or Zelda. So basically every urge of getting a Switch has banished haha.. till Mario Odyssey comes out of course. I advise you playing I am Setsuna. It’s an amazing JRPG that’s heavy on story and very artistic and got an amazing soundtrack. I played a bit of it on PC but as soon as I knew it was coming to the Switch I stopped playing it immediately. Happy switching :p

Hahaha I HATE RPGs. Any game that needs me to read conversations I detest. I’m barely putting up with it in Zelda, luckily they allow u to skip cut scenes. If I wanted to read I’d read a book, if I wanted to watch a story I’d watch a movie…

I totally get you man Some games are just meant for playing!. For me, as of how far games have reached in term of technology and polishing realism to levels never imaginable before, they represent the perfect entertainment medium. You are not reading a book, not listening to atmospheric music, not watching a movie or just playing a game. You’re experiencing everything simultaneously being right in the core of these fantasies and narratives. That’s why my criteria to a gaming experience comes off as pretty picky rather than just playing xD Breathe of the Wild is very RPG-esque though, minus the exp./stats of course.

I think not any powerbank or USB-C cable can charge the SWITCH. if it’s working for you can you please give me the name of your powerbank charger ? and can you confirm that your MacBook charger can charge it ? thank you for your review.

they make the best cases, I have a messenger bag from them thats 17 years old and still looks like I got it yesterday.

I am another satisfied Waterfield customer; I have three of their cases, two of their wallets and they are absolutely brilliant.

They last forever and are have excellent build quality – you should not think twice and if you see something at sfbags.com you think you may need – just buy it.

How long do you think it will be till the console’s price go down so it’s comparable to its real price everywhere else ? And how much will that be ? Like can I expect it to drop to 100 or 95 ? Or that will never happen

    • Mark says:

It’s sold out in the US as well and selling for $400+ but nintnedo did announce they will be producing double the amount of consoles so might go down to 100 once it’s more readily available

Do the eshop work with your switch? I can’t link my email to the eshop account.
