Kuwait a Dream Suspended

From the cover of the tape, this film “explores the rapid social evolution and economic transformation of Kuwait from a small pearling and trading community in the 1940s, to a country now occupying a pivotal position in world affairs.”

Kuwait a Dream Suspended is a rare documentary film about Kuwait in the 80s. I haven’t had the chance to watch it all yet but from what I saw it looks interesting. [YouTube]

Great documentary! It was an eyeopener -the people interviewed had an intellectual honesty & insight that’s in short supply nowadays. That generation really built Kuwait into what it is today. I wonder what they make of Kuwait’s progress (or lack of it) recently.

This is reason why mark248am1.wpenginepowered.com is on my daily todo list!

Its very refreshing to hear visionaries talk about their intended future for Kuwait but also sad at the same time regarding the ways things stand now ie. entire reliance on oil.

With a budget surplus over the last couple of decades, access to sea and a pseudo democracy Kuwait could have really reinvented itself. When oil runs out – another Egypt perhaps?

This is a great short film, used to have it on vhs in the 90’s. What always struck me as odd about it is the footage and characters are from the very early 80s but for the ending it skips to the invasion, seemed like a project that stopped with Al Manakh and the political issues of the 80s and the producer got stuck with the footage and the invasion was a great opportunity to resell it with a nice story.

Use to watch it at least once a week back in college. Best part about it was the title. Kuwait is still a dream suspended since 1981.

There was a solid vision when the the country started out.. I wonder what these people wud have to say, having thought thru so well way back then,
of things today.

Mark, i’v got to hand it to you. You know where to find thing that even I as a proud Kuwaiti have never seen before. I showed it to everyone they all loved it. The characters are strong and vibrant, I wish we had more of those people today and always. Thank you Mark for a great video.
