Run Foot Campaign

I found out about this yesterday and I think it’s a great idea. The 3 Club along with Viva are launching a campaign to collect a thousand pairs of wearable running shoes from now till the end of Ramadan. Once all the running shoes is collected they will be sending them to Africa and given to people who really need them. So if you have sneakers lying around you don’t wear anymore (I know I do), then follow the instructions below.

For more information check out the The 3 Club blog [Here]

The donation boxes as of now are currently located in the following locations:

Extreme Sports – Tilal and Salmiya
Viva HQ – Salmiya
Lashes Salon for ladies – Yarmouk
Baking Tray – Kuwait City
Tatami – Kuwait City
AUK – Salmiya
ACK – Mishref

‘1000 pairs of wearable running shoes for Africa’.
I really hope this is a bad joke. If not,-than it is an insult.

12,4 million people in the Horn of Africa are being threat by death as a result of lack of water, food and exhaustion. They don’t suffer obesitas!

Bad marketing strategy of the involved companies.

Apparently not enough Mark. Every day still thousands of people die in this ‘hell on earth’.
Mainly because of the worldwide ignorance, selfishness and politics.

But I can see already the happy faces of the children, mothers and fathers, running to the truck with supplies. Expecting something to drink or eat, -even if its just enough to stay alive for another day.
Can you imagine how gratefull they will be after receiving a pair of used -but wearable- running shoes?

Mum, mum, dad… please come watch my Nikes!

No food or water, son?

Sorry dad, but if we survive, I’ll promise you to win the Marathon at the 2020 Olympics for you and mum!

Exploiting the terrible living conditions of these people for marketing purposes, is in my (h) opinion a disgrace.

At least they are doing something Marcel. You seem to be the expert and first to knock the cause, what do you suggest?
Perhaps start by not generalising with comments like ‘worldwide ignorance, selfishness and politics’ because rest assured there are thousands of people helping around the world.

As your namesake once said: ‘I have spent more than half a lifetime trying to express the tragic Moment’.

I will be proud to give my shoes – in a disposable shopping bag that would have only been placed in the bin otherwise.

I don’t think you have to be an expert to understand that the only parties who benefit of these kind of aid are the mentioned companies. Or will you suggest that 1000 pair of used running shoes will help to relieve the suffering of starving people?
Its obvious that donating old shoes to dying people gives you a good feeling, but please, do not pretend that you are seriously helping people in need.

Yes, you sure can be proud to give your old shoes. Especially in this time of the year.

Have you ever considerd why I generalize? Try to think about it.

Marcel the organization that deals in sports wants to do something related to sports. It’s what they understand and love and it’s something they want other people to experience and enjoy. Like laughter sometimes makes you forget about pain, sports also helps your forget about many things. It’s an activity, it’s healthy and it’s social. There are tons of organizations helping people with money, food, water, clothes etc.. so if one organization wants to do shoes let them.

Maybe they would just wear them for regular purposes instead of treading around in the desert/jungle barefoot.

Oh, and the alternative to donating old shoes is to usually throw them out. The argument that donating food or water vs running shoes is mutually exclusive is incorrect.

Well i guess im with Marcel on this…

it would have made a little sense if the campaign said Footware instead of Running shoes..

eventhough it’s for a good cause..this sounds like a advertising campaign for the company..

they need more food and water than running shoes..

The campaign should have been more like… footware & clothing… for these prople running shoes are a luxury.. but what will do with a Ferrari when you cant put any fuel in it or drive it?

To advertise you need to have a product first. The 3 Club isn’t a shop and they don’t sell products. And 8 cardboard boxes in 8 locations isn’t really advertising anyway.

There are organizations that donate soccer balls to children in Africa. My recommendation would be for you to start a campaign against these kind of atrocities. Say no to sneakers and balls for the poor!

Lol.. my Bad.. i thought it was done by extreme sports… but then still it doesnt make sense… footwear in plain layman terms would have make a lot of sense than just running shoes…

What have you done for “12,4 million people in the Horn of Africa”…
I really hope you have done something more than just complain and reject..Cause they have enough pitty and it cant do them any good. Atleast the 3 club has done a great initiative for a great cause. What have you done?

The last weeks I’ve seen several documentaries about the drought in the Horn of Africa. A drought which keeps on for over 2 years now and has ruined the harvest and the cattle of the farmers. They were basically left with nothing to feed their children, -the elderly or themselves. A human tragedy of enormity.
Cause the picture of men and women telling about the lost of one or more of their children, – parents and other relatives, did choke me, I got more interested and started reading everything about this disaster. ‘How is it possible that in 2011, it still seems that we need another ‘Live Aid’ to get people interested in the deadly fate of fellow human beings?’

Trying to survive these people walk for weeks, sometimes hundreds of kilometers, just to reach the most nearby UNHCR refugee camp. Many of them are too weak and won’t survive this exodus. Especially many of the children and the old people die like flies before they reached their destination.
Once arrived the children are provided with a little food and water in a separated tent. The emaciated adults receive immediately medical treatment. For some on time, but for the less fortunate the hospital tent is their final destination and becomes a place to die with some dignity.

One of the reasons that there’re not enough refugee camps is because of politics. Local rulers don’t want the camps around cause they’re afraid that the survivors won’t leave for years to come. They simply deny the problem and refuse any cooperation with the aid-organizations.

In brief: a human disaster of unknown proportions is unfolding right in front of our eyes and we, the ‘civilized’ part of the world, are apparently unable to stop it. A tragedy of which we all should be ashamed for.

Running shoes for Africa
When I at first read the post about the campaign for running shoes for Africa it didn’t make much sense to me.
‘Shoes?’ For Africa? Where in Africa? In which country or part? What charity work do they cooperate? Which people in this enormous continent will they make happy with running shoes? Are there already made agreements and/or contacts with representatives of one of the aid organizations?
And many more questions which were not been answered in the article.

As for my interest in the developments in the Horn of Africa, I presumed that these were the people who’re most in need and required immediate help. But if my presumption was right, -why the ‘heck’ do they collect old running shoes for them?
There was no way in my mind I could make the connection. Never before, after watching a news item about the circumstances that these people have to live in, it has crossed my mind to send them my old running shoes. Never.

So after my first comment I hoped to be better informed and reassured that I totally misunderstood this campaign. Unfortunately it didn’t. The reactions were a bit hostile, -irritated and did not show any understanding for my point of view. Leaving me behind with the same questions I had before.

Exploit and commercialize
Though I understand that the initiative for this campaign comes from a non-profit organization, they work together with commercial enterprises. As in a troika.
In the post was even stated that VIVA is a partner and that several -mainly- sportswear stores offered their help by collecting the shoes. For this reason all the names of these stores were published in the post (-and comments), which by itself is already a nice marketing benefit, -and for free!
People are being seduced to visit one of these stores to donate their old shoes. Getting people/potential customers in the shop is the first aim in every marketing campaign. So the theorem that the companies of the ‘troika’ have no commercial benefit is doubtful.
Being associated with charity and extra visitors in the store is the dream of every person working in the marketing industry.

Having said this, I have to stress that I didn’t find anything which should proof that this constellation was a well-thought and conscious action by the organization.
Nevertheless, the result remains the same.

Now the million dollar question. The benefits of the companies are clear, also the donators get a ‘good-feeling’ by the idea that they’re actually doing something good for people in need. No problem with that.
But what does this campaign for good for the starving people in Africa, which situation is suggested to be the reason of this ‘shoe-collecting’ action? They are the people who have to deal with the loss of loved-ones almost on a daily basis. They’re the ones why good-faith people donate their old shoes. They are the ‘logo’ of this charity. But in the end they’ll have no benefit of it at all. Nothing! Zero!
Not a dime of the extra profit companies make because of this campaign will be spend to provide them any relief. No, while dying they’re provided with old running shoes.

Am I cynical? May be. But these are the clear facts.

Final: A jungle of charities
Several comments stated that all kind of help by any organization is a good thing. I have to disagree on that.
I have no doubt to the good intentions of the ‘troika’. I’m sure that they’re all decent companies or organizations, which by no means want to exploit human suffering. Though not intentional, harm will be done.
As said earlier, the result of this campaign will have zero influence on the suffering of these rejected people. On the other hand, people who might be interested in doing something for them, could become in a mind-state of false assumption that they added their part of help by donating their shoes. It could well be the reason to give less money or even no money at all to International Organizations who have the possibility, how little it might be, to really help these people.
Should this aid be organized by Governments? I agree, but the worldwide (financial-) crisis is not really helping to get more attention for human disasters (sorry for generalizing again..). That-, and because of logistic reasons, private initiatives put more pressure on the work of International AID organizations than that it actually helps them saving lives.

In my opinion those people and many others like them from across the world should stop having children if they’re living in extreme poverty. They can barely feed themselves yet they reproduce. In the end it’s the children that suffer. And stop refering to Africa as if it’s a country. It’s a continent.

At least some people can benefit from this and there is nothing to lose by giving.

It’s so easy to criticize, that is why there are so many arm chair critics around and less people who actually do something for a good cause..

we have boxes full of old shoes, however the collect, clean, bag and drop is asking me to do 90% of the work, they just count how many bags and throw them in a box and ship ?

if they post a number i’ll call them to pickup, clean, bag and ship them, i won’t do their work for them.

so you want to be able to donate by sitting on the couch and not moving? It’s not like they’re asking you to walk to Africa and deliver them to their office over there.

yeah ofcorse, use more plastic please 🙂
real ecofriendly
firstly, encouraging the use of plastic bags, secondly, each pair in a seperate bag…

“sent to Africa for people who really need it”
Why was this said in that context? I hate it when people speak of AFRICA as a poor place. It’s a new continent and some of it’s countries are intact doing really well (Ghana, south Africa..etc) why not be specific about the countries? Why is it always Africa? There’s poverty in some countries in Asia, we never see anyone saying “send running shoes to Asia”
This has recently been a case I’ve been givig a lot of thoughts to especially after the Toms habba in Kuwait. Id hate to see us becoming like the majority of white people in America., who feel good about themselves for “helping a dying child in Africa by buying toms”.. We’re less naive and smarter than that ya Kuwait.

to help Africa we need to teach them to be self sufficient not reliant on handouts. When will a program be introduced to teach and introduce change?

What the horn of Africa needs is food and water now. Shoes is secondary. What should be done is whatever money (Zakat or otherwise) being sent there should be used to build a water desalinization station so atleast they get enough water in times of drought. They can use that water for irrigation to get food. But politics will for sure stand in the way of building that.

Hi , i have a lot Of well branded shoes i dont wear , i have like 15 pairs ,
but i live in mangaf , theres no way i can donate them nearby?

ha!!!what!!شنو?!! these people dont have the strenght to walk becuse they dont have food, clean water + suffer from many disease and u want to donate shoes!!
!!

well done guys, excellent idea.

wallah we “arabs!” are the best in criticizing! netfanan!! ya jama3a have some “appreciation attitude”
at least this group of people are trying to do something! they moved their bodies toward something positive!!! they acted..
instead of being negative and watching TV all day!

i say, be positive, donate, participate, encourage others to support and then get busy with your own life.

Oh my such negativity for what ? This is a brilliant idea, Africa has always been and most probably will be a suffering nation. Plagued with corruption, disease and drought. Unfortunately try as we might this seems a never ending problem for these people, while I agree food and medicine is the most important gifts we can give these people, but it shouldn’t stop there, how many world class runners have ran with car tiers strapped to their feet or bare feet! These runners and athletes are the people who go back to their countries and make Changes. These are the people who inspire others by letting them see anything is possible. Why did Oprah and so many others donate books to Africa, because by educating people, change happens. Don’t they deserve to have more then food? We all know aid agencies are working 24/7 doing a brilliant job. These people in Kuwait have no doubt gave donations to poorer countries and now would like to help those who share a passion like them in running. As far as companies getting free advertising, this is the way it works you can’t just put Joe Blogs’s address down, people would then say Joe was keeping the shoes for himself. I say spread the word support a good cause, get schools interested it makes kids aware that poor people have goals and dreams too.

I just wanted to say that i have been to kenya and i volunteered and had the chance to live in their homes in the slums even though it was for a short time … yes there are many things that the people “need” like water, food, money etc. There are many campaigns and maybe there should be more .. but let me tell you about the best memories i had .. I remember this girl who was very excited with her snow white dress which to her was just a beautifull dress … the kids over there we’re happy with things that we couldn’t imagine will make us happy … in the slums all the teenagers play football whenever they can and with whatever they can.. they play not just for fun but for the hope of getting a chance to play for a team..and change their lives.. these are the same kids that look for food in the slums … so yes although they are in need of the basics they are still like us and this campaign may mean more than what we could even could understand … so its not about either this ir that irs about doing what ever we can …even if its some postcards (which made some kuds extremely happy to get) … So please the least we can do is not pass any more negativity … after all this is about “volunteering”!

Well said Mohd and full credit to you for getting down there. It must have been a life changing experience.
