The Mogahwi stationary shop in old Salmiya had been around for over 30 years, it’s a nostalgic place that has looked pretty much the same ever since it opened. The store was fairly popular back in the 80s and early 90s, but as malls started popping up and old Salmiya started to die, so did the footfall at Mogahwi. Back in 2009 I posted about how I was worried they’d end up closing down and they finally did last week. It’s sad to see it go, especially since it was down the street from my place and I used to pop in frequently whenever I needed anything. Now I’m gonna have to get my stationary from somewhere else…

Yes, nostalgic place, but the Sharq one is tons better for navigation and its drool-worthy selections.
Did you turn the banner black as a tribute?
no not for Mogahwi
Permanent change?
No just temporary. Brake Banzeen passed away yesterday.

Allah yerhamo… may his soul rest in peace
That’s a shame. I loved that branch. I guess they’re trying to gentrify the whole area and with higher rent.
There is a shop in my building that nobody was renting for like KD800 a month. Now because of the pedestrian street project they’re asking for KD1,750 a month…
check out the sharq branch, they did a bit of streamline.renovating…wish they’d bring in more newer stuff and accessories..and advertise more and get an online store !!!
Too bad, i also really liked that branch…
Inna lillah hi wa inna lillah hi rajioon.. was it an accident?

This is such disappointing news. I used to love going there as a kid — the smell of paper as soon as you walk in. Downstairs, where they had all the art supplies and everything was crammed to fit in. Damn, I’m really going to miss this.
Thank you for your work, Mark. I’ve not been back to Kuwait in a number of years since I am studying abroad, but your blog has always been a constant reminder of my upbringing and I continue to enjoy reading it.
My uncle Mr. John who was working there is now on termination notice 🙁
🙁 how long did he work there for?
That place had a very distinctive smell. I am not sure anyone would remember this, but in the 80’s they had the weirdest receipt thingy, it was like the size of a tissue box and they wrote your purchase by hand and then pulled the paper out.
Since 1983 !
