En Mexico – Mexican Cuisine

Tonight I passed by the new Mexican restaurant in Jabriya called En Mexico. It’s a new place that has been open for around a month now. A friend of mine on twitter had recommended the place so I decided to see if it was any good.

The place is small, cozy and located right across the street from Champions Gym and only around 50 meters from Early Bird. When we arrived there was only one other table occupied and so we were able to quickly sit down and check out the menu. I already knew what main courses I was going to have based on my friends recommendation which was the grilled chicken burrito and the braised beef brisket tacos. I also orders chips and guacamole and the jicama and mango salad.

The salad came first and I didn’t think much of it. It’s made up of sliced jicama (which is a sweet vegetable) and sliced mango. Problem is neither the jicama nor the mango were sweet so the salad felt a bit dull. The chips and guacamole followed soon after and I thought the chips were great but kinda regretted not ordering the regular salsa instead of the guacamole dip. So far I wasn’t too impressed but I was hoping things would change with the main course and luckily things did.

Both the chicken burrito and the beef tacos arrived at the same time. I ordered both of the dishes without any bell peppers but didn’t change anything else. The first thing I started eating was the chicken burrito which was pretty good although I wished it had a bit of spice. Later I found out that they were serving it spicy but customers were complaining it was too spicy. They’re still fine tuning the dishes so by the time you try it the spice level should have been adjusted. Now the star of the night was the beef tacos and that’s the dish I’d go back for. One bite into the taco and I knew this was it. The flavors just burst into my mouth and it completely turned the dinner around. The taco is soft which makes it easy to eat and I really loved everything about it. Once we were done I wanted to order the churros with chocolate sauce for dessert but turns out they needed 20 minutes to serve so I decided to pass on it.

En Mexico is currently still in a soft launch but I already have a favorite dish there. Next time around I would probably start off with the chips and salsa, I’ll skip the salad and order two side dishes instead, the Elote which is a mexican style grilled corn on the cob and the jalapeño corn bread with honey butter. For the main course I’ll definitely stick with the beef tacos but next time will make sure to order the dessert as soon as the main course is served.

While I was leaving in my car after dinner I nearly ran over the owner while reversing which was a funny incident. He’s a cool young Kuwaiti guy who’s running the place at night while having a regular day job during the day. I told him I’d be back again which I will. They’re currently only open in the evenings and they’re easy to find as long as you can get to Champions Gym. You can check out their menu by clicking the links below:

you missed out 3ad on the cornbread and the churros! and the fundido! those are my favs! yeah i like spicy too, jalapenos are a good idea 🙂

It’s a pretty big burrito and it comes with rice and beans. I only found the chips with guacamole dip plus the salad over priced. The main courses weren’t that bad when compared to say Chili’s and this place uses fresh ingredients.

No different than most American diners here…Chilis, Fridays, Applebees, RT etc charge nearly 4 KD for a hamburger with fries.

Ah! Thank you soooo much for posting this! I’ve been waiting for a decent Mexican food restaurant to pop up in Kuwait. Of course no place out of Mexico does it right like in the states but I’m crossing my fingers f

As it should be! Food looks great! But as a Mexican, I am slightly turned off by the yellow cheese being used. We use a cheese more similar to Kashkawan

I know! where “En Mexico” do they give you yellow cheese?. Sorry I am a Mexican and yellow cheese it’s a NO!!!

apparently I am not the only one that noticed that. I am from Mexico City and Yellow cheese we only use in Hamburgers….sometimes 😉

I will for sure try this place.

No way, it was pitch dark inside. I used the GX1 with the bright 20mm f/1.7 lens and ISO 1600 followed by a decent amount of post in Lightroom.

Narda and I passed by “En Mexico” last week. We got to meet the owner and had a very pleasant and interesting chat with him. Both Narda and I are Mexicans and just being there, amidst the cozy atmosphere sat by the dim lighting, decoration and music, we felt great and In Mexico! I asked Abdullah, the owner to recommend the dishes for me and I think he did a pretty good job…overall, we were proud and impressed by this young Kuwaiti entrepenour and we expressed it that way.

First the Early Bird and now this. TRY CONTAINER 75, MARK. You must’ve noticed it since you’ve passed it a million times. :p

Hey there, thanks for the great blog!

We went looking for En Mexico last weekend and couldn’t find it or Champion’s gym.

Is there any chance someone might give us more direction on how to get there? I’m from Texas and missing the comida fresca. (I KNEW I should have packed my tortilla press!)

Thanks again for all the recommendations. We tried out Azteca last night. It was hard to swim through all the trendy girls on stilts, and guys on steroids, but once we got inside it was all very good. My husband and I split some entrees, so we could check out a wider selection of the menu.

I think the Sopa Azteca was my favorite–you could really taste the ancho chilis. We also tried the tamales rajas. Has to be the first time in my life I have had a chicken tamale, but it was just what a chicken tamale should taste like. The portions looked small on the plate but they were reasonably priced and we all left very satisfied.

I will definitely be recommending it to people who are looking for Mexican food.

It’s parallel to 4th ring road, you’ll be able to see champions from there.. (near the starbucks/pinkberry complex) The address is Jabriya Block 1 A, Street 6. you can call 99111015 for help with directions!

Is a pitifull tha this restaurant don’t have any sign of the hours when is open or closed or telephone number to call.

I am A Latina living in kuwait I tried en Kuwait, and i wasnt very impressed:( I ordered the Sopa Azteca which is basically a tortilla soup that was luke warm and def lacked spices, I also ordered the chicken burrito..that was a wreck also no beans, rice was under cooked and not so flavorful:( A true burrito should have: Choice of meat, Beans(Whole/refried(in veggie oil)/Or Black Beans),and rice. Sour cream, Lettuce, and Guac should be plated on the side for customers enjoyment. Mexican Cuisine does not use Gouda in our food. I will give it another try and hope for better. The owner was very friendly but seemed a little annoyed and upset. I could tell by the decoration and just the whole feel of the place seemed a little Melancholy as if his inspiration was of a loved one or something. Either way My husband and family will def try again.

Don’t eat at Azteca unless you are from over the Mexican border and used to their cuisine. I’m from San Antonio,Tx and the menu here was not to my liking. I ordered guacamole and asked that it be served plain, but they kept adding the lime salt which changes the flavor and I don’t like it so after sending it back once, I finally gave up when they added the lime salt the second time around! The chips they served were not normal corn tortilla tasting chips but tasted like they came from some freeze dried chips in a bag chips then fried upon order. Not fresh! The enchiladas I was not impressed with either. Not enough flavor!
My son and I did not enjoy that meal at all.

The other night my son and I went to dine at En Mexico. My son ordered the chicken burrito and I ordered the tortilla soup and asked that they add avocado to the soup before serving it to me like they do in Texas, and it was served oh so delicious! The chips were fresh as
well. Overall the meal was great. Yes it is a bit pricy.
