An Issue with the Online Driving License Renewal Process

A couple of weeks back I posted about how you could now renew your driving license online. To test it out for the blog I decided to renew my long expired motorbike license and the whole process ended up taking less than 5 minutes. The only thing left was to pick up my driving license from any of the machines located around Kuwait and I decided to pick mine up from Avenues. Well, things didn’t go smoothly for me.

So here is what happened. I went to the machine to print my new motorbike license, I put my Civil ID in, I logged into my account and then the machine asked me to insert my driving license. When I insert my motorbike license it rejects it saying it was expired, when I insert my driving license it accepts it and then pulls up an image of my just renewed motorbike license and asks me if I want to print that. But, if I choose to print it then the machine would keep my driving license which I need and print out my new motorbike license instead. The machine should be taking my old motorbike license and printing out a new one but for some reason it wants me to trade my driving license for a motorbike one.

The support guy at the machines told me he hadn’t come across this issue before and didn’t know how to solve it and that I should head to muroor 3aseema (Kuwait City traffic department) to try and solve my issue. But since I only wanted to renew my motorbike license so I could post about my experience on the blog, I’m obviously not gonna go through that hassle.

Even though I ran into trouble with this whole renewal thing I do think under normal circumstances this process works really well and smoothly. If you’ve managed to get your license renewed and printed let us know about your experience in the comments below.

well wouldn’t call it beta testing since the guy didn’t write down the issue or report it anywhere, he just told me to go to muroor so don’t think issue will get fixed until it happens to more people.

Hey Mark,

Everything got done under 5 mins. Went there last week to get my driving license printed.
The printing of the card takes around 3 to 4 mins though. Hopefully they should improve the printing time as it might lead to long queue’s.
But all in all couldn’t believe I had my renewed driving license in hand so quickly.
Not many seem to be aware or know the process of applying online as many were still standing in line to get the number for their renewal. I was the only one at the machines.

Thank you Mark for writing the process down 🙂

So relieved and happy with this new service

I got mine from the Avenues and everything went smoothly. Compared to last year when I had to spend the whole evening, after work, in the Traffic Department to get my driving license renewed this is amazing.

I only learned about this process and applied for it a day before my license expired and everything went fine.

Does anyone know whether you have the option to request a 2-year driving licence when applying online? I ask as the option was available in the past, as the licence is linked to your Iqama.

You’re right.

I renewed my licence yesterday. The online process was a breeze, however a different story at the machines in The Avenues. There are 4 machines but with long queues at each and so took 40 mins to get to my turn. Thankfully, I got my licence and yes, the validity is linked to one’s iqama.

Be aware though that you will need to know your user name/password for the MOI site to log in at the machines.

Something tells me that Kuwait will need aa lot more machines than it currently has to handle the growing number of online renewals.

I renewed my motorbike license online, I faced 2 small changes…I wouldn’t call them issues mainly because the problem was resolved very easily and it was not completely the MOI’s fault.

1. I uploaded my civil id copy, photo and signature. They rejected it after 24 hours saying I need to update the photo, i had to realize myself the issue was with the background of the photo, which was white in color. so I uploaded a blue background photo, it got approved in few hours and I got to pay online the 5 KWD fee.

2. I didn’t get time to go to any of the 3 locations where they have installed the machines as per their website – Al Kout, Aveenues or Aseema Muroor. but on Thursday I happened to visit Jabriya muroor to transfer a bike and I spotted 2 machines so I asked the gentleman there if I could use them to print my license which I have already renewed online, he asked me to go to counter number 2 and tell him that I had renewed it online, He took my civil ID, old license and asked me to sit. after around 20 minutes another gentleman came out with about 15-20 licenses and started calling names and handing out the licenses and even I got mine.

So basically you can renew your license online and head to your muroor and still get it printed without using the machine.

So a separate license is issued for motorbike?

It would be better if one license indicated all the categories you can legally operate.

yeah i agree, the back of the license has the spots they should just digitally tick the ones that apply. i’ve always wanted to get a license for all 4 categories but seems like would be a hassle if i need to renew all 4 individually every time.

You can have all the licenses on one license but this is not a good idea. If your driving license gets confiscated then you lose all of the at the same time

I renewed my bike license with the machine and inserted the old bike license (expired in march) and it worked fine, only difference to you is i did it in Kout

so I did my renewal online on 30 Nov uploaded Civil Id, picture, and signiture, got an email saying it was awaiting review and today 2 DEC looked to see if it was approves and it said that i needed a medical check up. I have never seen that before and now it has gone back to just awaiting approval. Any idea why it is taking so long. I tried to donit without uploading picture and it wouldnt allow me to submitt.

Hello Mark

Your case got escalated to me and after troubleshooting, we found an unhandled scenario and it got solved.

You can now pass by to any Driving License Self Service Machine and print your bike/motorcycle license.

The whole process for me was super quick. Mine expired November 28 and I went online to renew it November 29. When I logged in to the system it told me that I had a traffic violation so I couldn’t renew the card, which I was surprised about, because I didn’t think I had been speeding or anything. The violation turned out to be a 5 KD fee for letting my drivers license expire. Once I paid it, I went back to the Renewal page and could do it immediately. Uploaded my civil id and signature, paid 1 KD, then headed out to Avenues. Within a half hour I had the license printed. The printing took a good 5 minutes though, but I disagree with the other comment that said they need to improve the printing because it will result in lines… driving license renewal is not THAT in demand for people to actually be queuing up for it.

One question has anyone who got a new license on or after 2013, renewed it online? Why i am asking is, because there are a lot of complications for those who secured a license on or after 2013

I went there a couple days back, a little after 12pm. The machines were all occupied, 7-8 people on each one. There’s a total of 4 machines btw, so that’s about 32 guys. When I finally got to use it, the keypad stopped working & there was no one to help so I pressed the back button & this side bar popped up & I managed to turn on the, ‘Touch pad’, feature but it wouldn’t work even then. This guy showed up to help, had no idea what was wrong so they had to shut off that kiosk.

Now we have 3 kiosks left. Thankfully I decided to stand in the last lane from the lane I was in earlier, process was smooth as butter. Just when it was my turn, I hear guys getting annoyed. Turns out a second kiosk, the one right next to the one I initially tried using just stopped. So 2 down. I left by 1:30pm but I’m pretty sure the other 2 went down as well as the day went by.

RIP.

Dear All

Please advise where are the Kiosk located?
I am facing an issue that I am clicking on the renew driving license icon, the page freezes and no progress takes place. Please help.

If you’re unable to make the application online, unsure why you then need to know the location of the Kiosks?

Anyway, officially, they are located at Al Asmah Traffic Department, Al Kout Malla and Avenues Mall. One of the readers also mentioned Jabriya I belive.

Is it a problem to have general information?
I also needed to know if anyone elae is having a problem logging in the moi site to submit an online renewal application.

Charming – so that’s the thanks I get!

Anyway, and if you’re going there, 1) there’s actually no need to log into the MOI to see the locations of the machines, and 2) had you read the earlier posts, the information was already there.
